I've never understood why there has to be a "greatest drummer in the world". Why not just enjoy watching a nd listening to them all, and leave it at that.

Because, most of the those proclaiming who's the greatest is really someone attempting to show you how much HE knows. "Well, I've been drumming for 30 years and let me tell you...." It all about them - not about the artist.

Greatness is found in the music, not the players. A great player playing a crappy song or piece of music isn't going to change the fact that the song is crappy. Bonham and Ringo played on great stuff AND their contributions were great and essential.

Nice video. Nobody should be cracking on any of these guys. Ian Paice, Bruford and a few others should have been on here, also. Paice is a big Buddy Rich fan and always talks about how he influenced him. In his early solos, he seems to emulate Rich quite a bit. I was always disappointed when he went to a more controlled style of playing to become a better time keeper. Jon Lord said it took a lot of verve out of his playing. Either way, I still think that Bruford and Paice should be on this video.

There's a world of difference between being the best at something and being the most proficient. Just because someone chops potatoes the fastest, or the thinnest, or both, doesn't make them the best chef around. It's the flavour and the combination of ingredients that does it, and sometimes a simple dish is tastier than a very elaborate one. It's like Ratatouille, and that's why people like Ringo Starr are on this list, and deservedly so.

yes Joaquim Duarte: i might add: the drummer in a group (more technically an orchestra, than a 'band'= a band, is what plays the stars and stripes). Jerry Edmonton (Steppenwolf) is VERY GOOD, AS IN A RECIPE....there is singularity cohesion, with other players, in time, mood, emotions expressed. Listen to all Steppenwolf tunes. Five man electrical band, same thing. All players must unite, in expressing the lyrics/mood/emotions. Chicago, same thing. Three Dog Night, same. i could go on and on.....Lighthouse, same thing. Village people, same thing. A drummer is only ONE PART of the music; all players must be on the same page. thankyou. Ginger baker, and Cream, all ingredients, of gold quality. i am not expressing my interest in any joner of music, just an observation as a tech.

Buddy Rich is the G. O. A. T, his skill level allows him to do with a standard 5 drum kit (either double mounted toms or double floor toms) what these other cats do with these monstrous set ups. The more drums and cymbals these guys have are marketing tools for their respective companies.

Easily the SICKEST vid on U-Toob. Carl Palmer [ELP] is a freakin' animal magician on his skins and I never knew he was so skilled and powerful. Drumming isn't all about how hard the drummer hits their skins with their sticks - although when attempting to make a point I guess it does....and it's definitely isn't all about the drummers kit either...and again though - if their kit is huge and flashy perhaps that tells us all about the drummer's characteristics...just look and hear Buddy Rich...nothing flashy...but boy does his sticks move fast...and the variety of sounds he makes...wow. For me this vid is all about the opening act Mr Carl Palmer, ELP, if he could he'd play his kit with his head. GO ANIMAL [The Muppets] !!!

@marvin kline said it best: "Buddy Rich had the best rudiments ever but Joe Morello and Gene Krupa had way more groove and swing. IMO there is no best just a bunch of great!" @jacob newman too: "It's very difficult to compare Bonham with Baker with Ringo with Moon with Rich or whoever else you add to the conversation. Each player fit perfectly ..." Ringo - one of the best. Simple, you bet. When you hear Beatles songs, you hear Ringo's drum parts, too. Stewart Copeland and Vinnie Colaiuta are great. Clyde Stubblefield and John "Jabo" Starks for James Brown. Bernard Purdie. Zakhir Hussein and his father Allah Rakah. Taranath Ram Rao could recite a composition in 13-and-a-half beats, while playing a different composition in 17, and make them resolve on the one. Some people live on a different plane. I had no idea that carl palmer had such monster technique 5:20 but ELP had no groove and buddy is better anyway.

I have been a professional drummer since 1969. First of all, it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to say who "The Best" is, on any instrument. Rock drumming is as different from jazz as the North Pole from Antartica. That said, if I had to choose only ONLY drummer to epitomize 'The Best,' it would have to be Buddy Rich, hands down. He could outplay all of these drummers with his right hand tied behind his back. In the entire history of percussion, there will only be one Buddy. No one else even comes close.
