Put a blade disconnect under the hood before the fuse holder on the hot side. If that hot cable rubs thru you will burn down everything. I would put that hot cable inside a heater hose just for extra insurance. If you modify a vehicle and that's the cause of a fire, insurance can deny your claim. And that's no joke.

I did the same thing on my truck when my battery went bad. I went to Harbor Fright and bought their heavy-duty jumper cables because they were cheaper to buy them and cut the clamps off than to just buy cable by the foot, and I bought the quick connect on amazon along with a 125-amp fuse holder and fuse. I left the old battery installed so it gave me a way to connect the cables to the pump. Works great and its cheaper than buying a new battery for the trailer. Thanks for making this video to show how us geniuses installed this lol.

Right on. I love it and can't believe I did not do it sooner. This should be a dealer option in my opinion because it works so well.

I had the same issue. My winch was killing my battery. I also added a 40 amp dc to dc charger. Now, it fully charges my battery within 30 mins of driving and maintains it at full charge. I just picked up a tilt trailer and will be doing the same thing.

I just use the aux 12v pin to charge the batteries. Alot easier and works with any vehicle, doesn't need anything special
@SeidelRanch

I still use that and it works fine if you don't use the dump trailer multiple times a day. It's those days I am dumping the trailer 4 or more times that it really helps a lot. Do you drop many loads a day with yours?
@TBrady
@TBrady Жыл бұрын
Phrasing. Yea, I've ran it multiple times a day without issue. When I go to dump it. I put my truck on high idle to give it a little more juice to help keep the battery topped. You may need to look into using a different battery if yours is dying that quickly.

The problem is if the trailer battery runs low you can draw too much on that 12v charge wire. If there are any issues/weaknesses in that circuit you will find... Including melting your trailer wire plug or blowing the fuse in the truck constantly if the auto reset fuse on the trailer isn't there or isn't sized properly for your truck. Jumper plug in is a great setup.

I had this problem with an interstate battery. I simply bought the largest marine battery that wal-mart sells…. Yes a wal mart brand battery, i swear by these batteries when it comes to marine deep cycle.

I have a set up like this on my truck. Was having issues with the dump trailer battery dying on me at the worst possible times, like at the landfill. Never knew for sure if I was going to be able to dump or unload by hand. You may have already done this, but I would add a heavy duty fusible breaker at the connection points to your trucks batteries. I was always concerned the cables might rub somewhere along the frame and cause a short, which in turn could cause some problems within the trucks electrical system.

Very good point, and I did add that. I put in a breaker so I could just push the button to disconnect the positive. I had the same concerns. I did secure that positive wire well, but you never know what could happen to it. I use it for the dump trailer and my winch. Loving the setup. No more dead batteries.

Check what voltage you actually get at your trailer battery. It will be lower than what you get at your truck batteries because of the voltage drop you get with that far of a run. What you have will deff take care of the bulk of it, but if you also had a dc/dc charger that is fed by your aux pin on your 7 way, it could take the say 11.5-12.5 volts you probably get on your aux pin and cranks it up to whatever you set it out, say 13.8 volt or so, so when you unplug your big cables, it will "trickle charge" your battery back up to a heathier float voltage. Its the same thing for the guys that think they can just have their aux pin in their 7 way charge a battery in the trailer and it will be all good..... it never gets up to a proper float voltage without a little extra help from another source.

The electrical connection to the truck for lights should be trickle charging the battery in the trailer. It has something inline to limit the current so you can't operate off of it but it should be constantly charging if the truck is running. Did you check to see if thats working? granted I only have a 7000lb dump, but i've dumped 10-15+ times in a day without even being connected to a truck (was pulling it with my tractor moving old piles of rotten hay/dirt backdragged off a field ) How old is the battery? sounds like its just about dead. unless you're just standing there running the bed up and down the trickle charge should keep it topped off between dumps.

Same thing for me, trickle is more than enough for a dozen dumps in a day.

Glad you didnt go with the gas powered option, you need your battery for your break away switch. Stay safe brother.

Thanks. I am happy with this setup. If I went gas I was going to have an electric start motor so it would have had a battery but then I would still have the same issues of batteries going out.

You should make a set of Jumper cables with an Anderson connector so you can jump people off without raising your hood. Interesting approach, I'm sure all that copper was pricey! Did you consider running 2 or more deep 12v batteries? Probably waaayy cheaper.
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch Жыл бұрын
I made the jumper cables. I use that a lot. I always have equipment on the ranch that does not want to start. I did try putting 2 batteries in the dump trailer years back, but then I just had 2 batteries crapping out. The key there is the amount of use they get and the charging. The wiring was not that expensive really. Plus I wanted the use of the winch and the ease of using the jumper cables. It's been awesome so far.
