Im embarrassed to share that I own a 300php or roughly $6 folding knife. (Im a very broke student thus the cheap knife.) It might be a cold steel knock-off but its been with me for years, for 5 years now and it held well and gave service and served its purpose despite the cheapness. It's still sharp as I keep it that way since I dont know how to sharpen it without ruining the edge or scratching it. I maintain it with oil and wipe it off after using it.

Ganzo and Sanrenmu are who got me into knives. For Ganzo I like the 7601 and the 7611. For Sanrenmu the 7096, 7063 luc (axis version), 910 and 7010. Another sub $20 knife I like is the Enlan EW105 (was super stiff out of the box, but it'll get smooth after the detent ball carves a path through the coating). I no longer buy from companies that make clones or heavily inspired knives or whatever, but without them I doubt I would have gotten into knives in the first place.

I've been carrying the SRM 9211 lately. It's ~$18 - $20. The 9211 is such an enigmatic knife, affordable yet elegant. I wanted a light edc knife, SRM 9211 is around 3oz. Much lighter than the burly Cold Steel that i carried for last 2 years. The Ganzos are sweet... I am more partial to the mid size of the three you demonstrated.

I finally pulled the trigged on a Firebird 7651 when the discounted price went from above 27$ to 21.5$ and I'm mostly enjoying it, but the axis lock springs are incredibly tough. I can open it with my thumb and some effort, but when I have to close it the ammount of pressure I need to apply to the lock leaves noticeable imprints on my fingers. Did that 10-15 times in a row once I got it to get a feel for the knife and those imprints last and sting for a few hours. Haven't done a full disassembly, but it looks like mine have bearings instead of washers.

Hard to beat Ganzos for the price point! They are the brand that got me into knives. The FH51 and the FH11 were the first two I bought. 13 Ganzos later and I can’t stop buying them! One of my favorite Ganzos is the FB7651 very fidgety and gets a lot of pocket time.

I have recently bought the Ganzo 740 and I gotta say I love it, a lot of places have it priced over $50 now, but I still think it's pretty good for the price. Mine does have just a little front and forward play, might need a slightly thicker blade stop or stronger omega springs, but other than that pretty solid.

@@maxlvledc its a newer steel from them. I disnt experienced it yet but i have plenty of their 330c knives and this is how i got hooked up on ganzo back when. 330c is very universal. Good cut but also easy to maintain for an unexpirinced guy like me. The only thing id say is watch for those tips and dont pry or it is a fragile steel (and 440c even more id assume). I dont live my knives wet but they can pick up some rust if left uncleaned. Usually steel wool is enough to clean that up. D2 is harder to sharpen but the cut is nice, i like it better than 330c for sure. You will probably get just enough doodes spitting atvthis knives as they're not hot brands or even knockoffs but im cheap (read budget oriented) and i will stand by my daily ganzo knives. How can i share a pic here? These been popular in russia b4 picking up in the us. I will always remember how one day i brought one to work and then end up buying 5 nore for guys ordering exact copies from me. I have 4 Ganzo pocket knives so far. The F7601 is my favorite/EDC because it just feels perfect in my hand and the blade is just right to me. My only gripe is that the pocket clip can't be removed or switched to the other side, so lefties might not like it. I will switch that out for the FB7651 from time to time, such as when wearing basketball shorts, because it's slighly smaller and lighter, but the blade feels a little anemic in comparison, but the clip can be removed or reversed. The G720 is big and beefy, so I got it in orange so I don't lose it when doing yard work, hiking, etc., and it takes a beating like nobody's business. The only one I'm not totally in love with is the F759MS, even though I originally bought these looking for a replacement for my missing Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara 2, which it's basically a smaller, better made clone of. I think I was just won over by the other models' thicker, sturdier blades and their ability to open with a flick of the wrist. So, that one lives in my truck as a backup/guest blade. Yes, a guest blade. You never know when a passenger will need to open a package, and it's not safe to go digging for my back pocket while driving.

Something I want to make clear about buying "cheap" in general, is that it doesn't have to do with being on a budget. No one should pay $$$$$ for sometime as good as a $ product. This can be either objectively of the same quality and function, or it can be individually. For example, a cheap box cutter fulfills all of my cutting needs, no reason for me to buy a 200$ knife.

as you said on Rai's podcast there are some steels that should go away (3CR, 5CR, 7CR, and definitely 8CR) and for the budget lineup start with 440C, 12c27n, and maybe VG10 for better budget options.I'm wondering if Ganzo has all of the 440C in China because no one else uses it and do they heat treat inhouse because that is the real difference maker with them. I have a few Ganzos they labeled as clones however I would disagree. Clones try to pass themselves off as the real thing whereas Ganzos aren't trying to fool you.
