I got the CD MCH with the EDC head, and I love it! I was sick of burning holes in my pocket and needed a light that had an ND protector. I've carried this one for 8 months without a single ND. Also, it's bright as heck, and feels solid as a rock. As a civilian, this is more light than I'll ever need...I hope! haha. Great review! Thanks!

What an absolutely fantastic video... I have been seriously considering purchasing the CD MCH (whenever they replenish their stock that is) and this has definitely given me some food for thought. I was torn between the EDC and HC heads, but after seeing how far short both fall in terms of both candela and lumen output, the HC definitely seems to be the way to go. I like the beam/spill pattern better on the CD than the modlight and thus it is still my favorite of the bunch as of now. I am eagerly looking forward to your torture testing of these lights. Thanks for all you do; you've broadened my level of knowledge about lights tremendously from your videos in ways I didn't know I needed to learn. Cheers and keep up the great work!!

This channel is doing the best work on this topic by far. The higher resolution runtime for the first five minutes is outstanding. This is the programming that matters for most real-life use. It's so interesting to see the different strategies between brands. It looks like the Surefire is being driven extremely hard for the first minute (greater than rated output)! I think this is common programming for SF as I see this pattern in my P3X as well as my EDCL1-T when testing relative output with a simple solar-cell. In contrast, the Modlite drives at 100% for three minutes which is probably only possible/safe due to the lower total output. These new lights are crazy. It was just a few years ago when LED handhelds weren't even powerful enough to require step-down programming for thermal. I still have a 320 lumen G2X and even a couple 500 Lumen P2X's that run at 100% drive for the entire regulated runtime.

As a defensive light, Modlites are in my pocket and on all of my rifles. In my experience I have found the OKW to be great if you have a magnified optic, PLHv2 is great for more flood and better situational awareness compared to the OKW head. Both are awesome but if I could only pick one it wold be the PLHv2.

Excellent video. High Candela + Thyrm Switchback = Rock and roll. With Thyrm Switchback you can use it for striking as well, knuckle dusting, aside from striking with the flashlight itself. Because the 2.0 version of Switchback is more sturdier that it can withstand impacts compare to the first version of it.

I have the CD MCH EDC Dual light. It is my favorite light thus far. I like the dual; it is very functional, both modes have their use and simple to adapt to. I've never tried the Modlite, a single mode didn't interest me and it's $100 more, although if they offer a two mode I'll probably buy one. I own and have used multiple mode lights; Olight, Thrunite, etc. Ultimately the simplicity of the MCH is awesome; one button, no side button to fumble for, and the two modes are all that I really need indoors and out.

The Elzetta Bravo B331 with a Thyrm Switchback 2.0 is the most durable light ever made and has a proper rotary tailcap for self defense. It is waterproof inside and out, has fully potted electronics, and a 1 inch thick solid acrylic optical lens. It is also modular and 100% American made, significantly more durable than the lights in this video. I like my Surefire lights and Streamlights but they are toys compared to my Bravo. Surefire is definitely a step up from Streamlight though.

Lol same here! I can’t decide which I like better for pocket and which I like better for my home defense 12.5in bcm, if I could only have one I guess I prolly would go with the HC their both good tho! And also if you have the HC head on your ar15 it is really nice to use as a point of aim, I shot mine awhile back right after I got my rein 2.0 and it really well inside of 15yds with my light beam, close up in a house that’s honestly prolly all I would use it light em up with that tight beam and shoot lol, which is really nice, not to have to worry if the eotech has auto shut off yet!

Second time watching this video. For me hands down the HL-X is the best light for the non-LEO average person. Regarding the slight water absorption failure, at the end of the video, I still see that the stream light took a massive beating, and was still functional, even compared to the others. For the average person, there’s almost no way any flashlight you carry regularly or semi-regularly is going to have to withstand even 1/4 of the abuse received in this video. The stream light didn’t quite shine through the car headlights as well but again, I think that would only come in to play in a law-enforcement situation.

Cloud MCH HC user, here. I find the Cloud beam profile to be more useful than the Modlite okw. I think the Modlite plhv2 is a better overall light for most purposes, especially EDC. That said, Cloud recently released the REIN 3 head which is 100k candela and even more lumens than the HC(2.0) head and without the drop-off in power.

Im very interested to see if Cloud Defensive's new MCH (they don't seem to really market them as "Gen2" but moreso just a refinement or re-invisioned MCH) Performs better. I was super interested in getting my hands on an MCH, but after seeing their lights didnt meet spec i was put off. I have no doubt that the quality of the light is excellent, but at this price bracket the specs are EVERYTHING. I think for my candela monster I'm going to end up putting together a Modlite body and HRT AWLS head after seeing how well the AWLS performed as a rifle light. I like the increased lumen output while still putting up excellent candela figures as well. HRT I think is missing out by not offering a more easily accessible AWLS handheld option. The AWLS head on a modlite body also gives me Thyrm compatibility to use either a switchback or LPC, and gives me more lumens than a PLH-V2 and more candela than an OKW, it's better than the best parts of both modlite heads in my opinion. We have so many companies pushing the envelope and what can be achieved in this size of light that I'm constantly amazed. My current EDC light is a Fenix PD32 V2 which has a max of 1200lumens and about 39000candela, and the switching is good but not perfect for a "defensive" EDC light. It has a mode memory and will always momentary in the last mode you used it and can only change modes once you've turned it to constant on so it's workable (and very comfortable to carry) but I comfortably carried a much larger light for years and wouldn't mind getting a slightly larger light for the extra output that the AWLS would give me.

I think the Nextorch TA30 has the best UI.Two stage tail switch. First stage turbo second (deeper push after some resistance) strobe. You have an additional switch ring at the tail so you can also use it as edc with smaller outputs. But if you have it turned on on a smaller output you still have direct access to turbo or strobe via the tail switch.

I have done a bit of research and ended up with a Malkoff devices light. It is unmatched in robustness (perhaps a con for some as it is very weighty), has excellent reliability, a good amount of throw and spill, and has a very reliable high/low switch. screw the head all the way tight and you get max output. no programming. loosen it a bit, which is not something that would happen accidentally, and it has a nice 5 lumen output. this is as close to my ideal light as I've found as I have an industry-leading, reliable light with good output and the ability to use it more usefully with the low output for most situations a light is needed. if i am somewhere with only that light and the power goes out, a natural disaster, getting lost, anything that would need more than 2-5 hours of annoying bright light, i'm good. i have a couple days of constant light at my disposal.

@@vp2747 yeah it’s pretty amazing that such a normal sized, pocketable light is in the same performance ballpark. The Surefire and Streamlight with their huge bezels and only 20k candela simply don’t make sense for an EDC tactical light. Worn in a light holster a duty belt, the extra mass gives longer runtimes so if they matched the higher candela lights they’d make sense for a uniformed officer or guard. But unlike those two, the Fenix actually is competitive with the cloud & modlite for the purpose we presumably are focusing on.

This would be a hard test, and the test design might have to be done “from scratch,” but I would be interested to see what is “enough” candela/lumens. Much how many of us don’t care that .45 has more muzzle energy than 9mm, because 9mm is more than adequate for self defense. I’d be interested to see how you could test a light for minimum acceptable performance for self defense.

I run the Surefire Fury. WHY ? Because they are a american made company as well as the other 2, I know streamlight is made in China. SF has super customer service plus I have for the past 35 years ran notihng but them. They were the first high quality light out there for LE. I just feel that they suit my needs and have NEVER had any problems with the dozens that I have.

The sucktacularly LOW CRI on all these tactical lights have me staying away. The Chinese Side-Switch lights have PLENTY of High CRI (95-98) models available. My favorite are the Emisar D4v2 with a SST20 4000k High CRI LED. It's NOT a rear switch tactical light but it is high output, takes the excellent 18650 and fits in your pocket all for about 50 bucks.

We have shared all our data including the UL report with Sean @ Cloud Defensive, weeks before this video was released. Either our samples are bad, CD's methodology or calibration is different, or both our testing and UL's testing is incorrect. I think it's probably methodology. Tacticool bois always want to pretend that they will be able to spin their light around like nunchuks when shit hits the fan, when adrenaline is pumping, when you're scrambling for cover. The thyrm is a fun fidget spinner but don't expect to get a consistent engagement when conditions are less than ideal. Put a light on your gun.
