As a "cool kid sommelier", I completely agree that there is nothing wrong with how most of the entry-level Grande Marque Champagnes taste, but I have every problem with how expensive they are in the UK in relation to the quality you can get from Grower Champagne at the same price point. As shown here, the Andre Clouet comes in at a similar price point, and even cheaper than the Veuve, and is a Grand Cru wine rated as their #1 pick. For the style of Champagne that I prefer, I will always see greater value, style, and individuality in grower Champagne :)

Peter, you remind me of my dad who was a sommelier & sold fine wines in the N End in Boston. He always said that everyone has their own pallet. I really miss him & watching this made me feel he was watching you with me. 🍾🥂

When I eat out I typically look at the wine list first, decide on the wine i want then look at the menu for food that compliments it. My favorite affordable bubbly pairing is Veuve Clicquot with KFC. Clicquot cuts through the fattiness of the chicken like a scalpel, whilst the brioche notes echo with the biscuits and gravy. My favorite combination of luxury and cheap. Thanks for another great video.

I love Veuve Cliquot with some breaded shrimp. It goes in the classic seafood direction but is far cheaper than lobster or crab and similar to KFC it has that breading that goes well with a fresh Champagne.

For a recipe to celebration we had a bottle of veuve and a bottle of Moët. None of us had had them and we were all used to $15 “champagne”. EVERYONE immediately remarked that veuve was a massive leap over anything we had had before. None of the younger people preferred the Moët and some complained that it was too acidic.

I'm glad that you both enjoyed Andre Clouet. He's such an underrated producer who I was only recently introduced to. The bottle you drank is 100% pinot from Bouzy, which is a famous Grand Cru village in Champagne, and for only $40-50! What a steal. I would much rather drink Clouet over Veuve or Pol Rogers. I'm glad that Clouet is getting more attention, but I'm worried it'll drive up his prices haha!

I recently picked up some Oneida flavor first, crisp & fresh glasses designed by Karen MacNeil, and I’ve been very pleased with its performance. My guess is that flute glasses are used for sparkling wines mostly to slow down the escaping co2, so you can enjoy it for a longer period of time. Same reason why sparkling water manufacturers shrink the top of their bottles. The more surface area, the easier it is for the gas to escape.

Excellent presentation! I have had all seven of these wine's over the last couple of years, and they are all quite good for the price. When my Niece, her friend & I do a "Champagne Night" we drink two bottles along with a big variety of munchies to compare the wines with. We try to start with an entry level wine (much like one of these 7) followed by a more premium selection, often from the same Champagne House. It's been both educational and fun, I would recommend it as a fun way to drink some bubbly!

I 100% agree on Moët & Chandon. Mediocre champagne, although their luxury brand is the champagne to rule them all (Dom Pérignon). But Piper-Heidsieck! this is the only champagne (with the horrible "Mary Stuart" brand) that has been consistently bad for basically ever! Mumm? I'm biased, for they were absolutely awful, but they've improved a lot lately. Want champagne that NEVER disappoints out of those seven brands? Veuve Cliquot. And I prefer Vranken in this price range personally, but I've noticed many people prefer Cliquot. With all those brands, always put the extra 10$ to buy the "Grande réserve" or "Grande cuvée" rather than the generic; it's ALWAYS worth it.

Their recommendation for Veuve is befuddling to me because I find so much bottle variation. The last one I had was aggressively acidic and astringent, with very little else going on. It was the least enjoyable champagne I’ve had in a long time (and I drink a lot of champagne). I’ve never been very impressed with the base Veuve, even with better bottles. Maybe it’s just not my style. Their Grande Dame is excellent, however.

My girlfriend and I were planning to try some champagne for the first time but it's just too expensive here in the Philippines. The only brand that we know is Moet & Chandon which costs $85 (₱5,000). High export costs, weak demand, and weak peso vs. dollar exchange rate are to blame. Good thing I watched this video first. Luckily we found Andre Clouet Grand Cru on some local online store which only costs $50 (₱3,000).
