In this video I compare some of the best ETF available. Where I review the different ways to review ETF like looking at the valuation, risks, performance, and holdings. The SCHD etf, VOO, and VGT etf are a perfect group to compare since they react differently to the markets and showcase how different an etf can be when looking at the proper criteria. There are a lot of personal requirements that make an ETF the best option for each person, and those differences should be taken into account when looking at your investments.

I admit we don't teach financial education in school. Even simple stuff like balancing a checkbook account and the credit trap that is a necessary evil. I had a high school teacher who one day decided to scrap his regular lesson plan and taught us how to balance checking, the importance of a serious emergency fund (I call the "Oh shit fund," because something happens and you need that reserve), and that minimum wage jobs are too little to survive and why educating yourself at university or in a trade is critical to have skills to be marketable in job market that will change and to learn to adapt. That was in 1988 and damn that one day I learned simple, yet critical basic financial advice I never learned at home. I do work with investing, but I need to take a more proactive role. I have a 403B plan and need to go higher risk at this point. Market is volatile, but I can buy lower now. I'm willing to do cryptocurrency . I want real tangible assets that back up any stocks, other equities, and other forms of investments from plan. I wish the last five years I had been more aggressive in new allocations, but the average American doesn't even begin investing till 40s. I started at 33 when I got a stable job. I was reared to accept social security may not be there for my generation or maybe a lot less it's value. You are so right sir. We need people to really plan their Financials. Even if it becomes your children's inheritance. Sadly one in 3 don't make it to retirement age. So if anyone is reading this, please balance saving for future, but also live a little as well. And don't wait to travel till your 60s. Find ways to travel earlier. We have no guarantees of future, and your body may make it harder to see the places you want to explore if you wait. Hugs to this fellow who wrote his comment and to you all.

My investment strategy previously encompassed a three-fund portfolio with an allocation of 33% each in the S&P, Total Stock, and international indices. Recently, I felt compelled to pivot entirely towards growth-oriented assets, thus transitioning to a 100% stocks allocation. However, I've begun to question the logic behind simultaneously holding both the S&P 500 and Total Stock Market, considering potential redundancy. Regrettably, my investments have been in a downturn for the past month, significantly impacting my emotional well-being as I toil diligently to earn my income. This turbulence in the market has left me in a state of nervous despair. Uncertain whether to liquidate my entire portfolio or adopt a more passive stance by waiting, the sight of my investment dwindling away adds to my distress.

Numerous intriguing stocks across diverse industries warrant consideration in your investment portfolio. It's crucial to recognize that acting upon every forecast isn't necessary. Therefore, I recommend engaging a financial advisor who can provide guidance on optimal timings for purchasing and selling the shares or ETFs aligning with your investment objectives.

Excellent structure and information in this video Brian, thank you, lots to think about! SCHD's high dividends and consistent returns seem to be a pretty good bet if I'm looking for a safe withdrawal rate of 3.5-4% and to match inflation (I'm looking for a "safer" 6% return basically). VGT's returns are appealing though! Since SCHD and VGT have so little overlap, could they be a good diversification play to cover US large cap vs buying say VTI or VOO?

Brian, I watch a lot of videos on investing. This was easily the most comprehensive one that considered a variety of important factors for considering and selecting ETFs, and it didn't take an hour to do so. In particular, this is the best presentation of the trade-off between risk and return. - - - It is my opinion that many (most?) investors jump onto the SCHD, VOO, or VGT band wagon because of the returns and don't even know that they will, at some time, endure a drawdown of 15%-35% in the value of their portfolio. I subscribed. Who are you? What is your investing background, education, experience? Who do you work for?

@BusinessWithBrian
@BusinessWithBrian 4 ай бұрын
@@elizabethbednar6338 Sadly, no it will not beat VOO. I cover that in the video, where I explicitly state that the dividends are reinvested to get the total return, and all expenses have been taken out. It truly comes down to looking at the total return to know how a stock or ETF compare to one another. If a person were to pocket the dividends and not reinvest them, then the total return would be substantially lower. There are a lot of people that have false hope that the dividend can be stacked on top of the total return, giving it an amazing return. But that would be a false narrative. It's (dividend) already been taken into account in the total return.

With this strategy is it possible to beat VOO and the overall market on a consistent basis?

That is a fantastic question. I personally have about 50% of my portfolio in stocks and the rest in funds including what I'll call "other". But please know since I'm not a licensed financial advisor, I cannot provide advice. I can merely state the models that I've looked at and the results they've shown for historical performances. Remember that past performance is no guarantee of future performance, and always ask "How much costing?" These funds are all trading at a high cost and so you have likely already missed out on the big gains.

Did your return figures for each ETF factor in the expense costs?
@billcarruth8122
@billcarruth8122 5 ай бұрын
At 0.1%, 0.06%, and 0.03% the expense ratios are so insignificant that it shouldn't really be a criteria to choose between them. Also, the cheapest to the most expensive expense ratios also correspond to the lowest to highest performer.

I’d like to know how much SCHD would pay me per year compared to the rest at the end of your comparison. I also think you said when you ran the numbers you factored in that SCHD was dripped, right?
@BusinessWithBrian
@BusinessWithBrian 5 ай бұрын
Correct, all of the dividends are assumed to be reinvested when looking at the total annualized return. It's a common misconception when some people think that the total return doesn't include the drip. If a person makes that mistake they're in for a world of hurt in 20 years. The total number I provided is based on SCHD being reinvested to provide the total return dollars. Clearly, if you were to take that money and not reinvest it your total growth would be substantially lower.

@@BusinessWithBrian I’m about $30,000 deep in SCHD. Just my personal IRA though.

But, SCHD is a dividend ETF, with about 100 companies. Not an S&P 500 ETF. VOO has just over 500 companies, and VGT is tech-centered with just over 300 companies. And tech is doing well regardless. IYW (iShares US Tech) outperforms VGT with only 139 tech companies. So, if we're trying to reach max gains, I'd say none of the above (SCHD, VOO, or VGT).

I believe investors should focus on under-the-radar stocks, especially given the present rollercoaster nature of the stock market. 35% of my $270,000 portfolio consists of collapsing stocks that were previously respected, and I don't know where to go from here.

Does the schd earnings include dividends reinvested? And Tech has been on fire the last couple years, so excluding the last two years how do the numbers add up?
@BusinessWithBrian
@BusinessWithBrian 5 ай бұрын
Yes, it does include the dividends being reinvested. I made it a point to mention it twice in the video. Tech actually did poorly the past couple years, that's why I made it a point to include the three-year return and show that all three were nearly at the same level of returns. I hope that answers your questions

@@BusinessWithBrian , I'm sorry that I missed you saying the dividends were reinvested. I'm surprised your saying tech did poorly, when the likes of Nvidia, Google, Microsoft are what's been propping up the returns of the market overall. Are you saying that Tech overall is doing poorly because it's just those few companies that are doing so well? Thank you
@BusinessWithBrian
@BusinessWithBrian 5 ай бұрын
@@GeryTeague Sorry for any confusion, so let me be more specific. Tech is doing great this year, but the past couple years leading up have been very rough. Similar to what I was speaking to in the video with the standard deviation being high for tech companies, so when the market dips......tech companies dip even further. This is why all three ETF are somewhat close at the 3 year return, because tech has a higher drawdown in the difficult years. But over the long term, tech has clearly been doing the best because it has time to weather out the bad years with moments of stellar returns.

What is happening with SCHD today?

Schd is facing a rapid interest rate increase. It is now undervalued as cds are much safer. When the rates drop you will see a return to fair value and a balance in the market.

Something else to consider: on the Growth side QQQ\QQQM has performed almost as well as VGT with only 50% in tech. On the value side EQWL has outperformed SCHD.

You can, me personally I do invest in all three and several others. I never feel comfortable putting All my eggs in one basket. For me and my investments, I want to have some investments to minimize risk, but I also want to make the most that I can with the high growth tech areas too. In any case it's all personal preference
