I use the cable that came with the car, and a $40 adapter to plug it into a dyer outlet. Sure, it's "only" 30 amps, but 0->70% in 9 hours is good enough for me!

True. I bought a 25 foot long cable on eBay for $250 that was already configured to plug into my 240V dryer outlet. My Leaf only needs 30 amp service for its built-in 6.6kW charger. I only use about 7kWh of juice per day (enough for my daily 30 mile round trip), so I need only about an hour and a half to top off every evening.

If you want to charge at “off-hours” …then you need a “smart” EVSE ….so you can talk to your EVSE, or program your EVSE, or find out the status of the charging process …..or whatever else there is. The only thing you need is properly rated cable, 40 AMP or more, AND the J1772 plug module. .

Some great advice there on different EVSE units. Was asked by a smart Ass one time at a Garage how I fueled my Car, and did i have to " Plug it in " I asked him how does he charge his Mobile Phone or his Toaster. i said if you can figure out how to charge a mobile phone then its the same with an EV just a bigger cable, and takes 1minute to plug it at night and 1min to unplug in the morning, usually once a week for me.

I just got my Tesla wall charger. I watched a lot of Tom’s videos about EVS’s and I was going to just use the mobile charger that comes with my Model 3 SR+. But I decided on the Tesla wall charger because of price, ease of use, and not having to store my mobile unit when I go on trips. Now I just need my car to be delivered and to have the EVS installed.

I got the basic dumb evse from Flo. Does a great job and no issues. Don't need to connect to wifi as I program my car to know when to charge.

As a board member for row housing .. the question is what do we use. Each unit is responsible for their own power/poles etc, but everything is located away from the buildings in a outdoor parking lot, where posts are on the sidewalks (2ft posts w/ plugins). Residents would need to be able to lock out their devices, and mount, without impacting sidewalk walkability

I went with 240v level 2 32 amps at home which is great to charge at night and it will be ready overnight. Make always ready driving for days. Nevada in the Reno area only has 2 Telsa ev charging V2 and V3. We need more Tesla charging stations when they let other cars manufacturers use them. I am 20 miles from there. I am in Spanish Springs NV can put charging station in my town.

I've got a Leviton 40A 9.6 kW "dumb" charger that's similar to the Clipper Creek back when they were the cheap option ($600 then about $1500 now!), they just seem more durable in the long run and most cars have the charge schedule stuff built into them these days anyway.

Although new cars can't change over 48 amps the older Tesla's could charge higher. My 2018 Model X changes at 72 amps but it requires the older Tesla changer connector to support this. It also required me to install a 100 amp breaker to my box which required an engineer to sign off for the permit. Older Tesla's were even higher at 80 amps! The Teslatap mini has a 80amp version but the only connector I know of that can do 80 amps is the older Tesla chargers. The newer ones only support 48amps.

Honest question here. Why supply station a.k.a charger are needed? Since the charger is in the car why not just an extension? One end with a 240V plug and the other with a J1772 plug? I would assume is trivial for the car to control how much current to withdraw and when.

Hi Tom. I just installed my tesla wall charger. Commission the charger was not easy. I watch a lot of videos, and follow the instructions. After disable the data on my phone ,I thing I got it connected. The top green light is bilking, That means, Ready to charge. But how do I know if the charger is connected to the WI FI? There is no APP for the charger. So I have to wait 2 more months for my Model 3 long range to arrive to try it. Its going to a long 2 months! Thank you!

Tom: If DC charging goes directly into the battery where is the control to taper off charging as the battery approaches 100%? Would not direct into the battery be dangerous without controls? Are you saying that there are two controllers, one for AC, and one for DC?

Yes, DC fast charging is absolutely controlled by the vehicle, very closely, in fact. I was referring to the onboard charger that has to convert the AC electric to DC to store it in the battery.

I wish the Tesla Wall connector and other J1772 EVSE chargers could communicate with each other to power share. We’ll be adding a Ford charger and it would be cool if I could put it on the same circuit as my Wall Connector without a huge electrical upgrade.

You can use another Tesla connector with the Teslatap that Tom talked about. For those that don't know, Tesla connectors do communicate and will split amps.

I park in the driveway but have power in the garage. I would like an EVSE where the cable can slip under the garage door. Currently I have UF cable that slips under the door to an EVSE on a small stool I set outside when charging. There has to be a better way. I would also love to see a 120v portable EVSE that is all contained in the handle, so that I can get an emergency charge easily without carrying a full EVSE.

@@tinastellhorn5843 There is a cool (but sketchy) DIY project to build a combination EVSE/handle here on YT. Otherwise, I have heard nothing. In my garage, the not-quite-to-code UF cable still charges my EV while peacefully resting under the closed garage door.

I have heard that car "chargers" have a limited lifetime. I.e. there is a limit to the number of times they can be used for charging. Can that possibly be true?

I've never heard that. The warranty on most EV traction battery is 8 years/100K miles so it will last longer than that. Now it is just another part inside the car and can go bad like anything but they don't have a short life. Most battery packs are expected to far out last the car it's in and then go onto a second life in energy storage somewhere. There are people with over 100K miles on their cars that charge daily. In case you were asking about these EVSE's, I'm pretty sure my ClipperCreek has a ten year warranty.

The limit I recall was a really big one, like more than 10,000 charging sessions (which would be 27 years if charging daily), but still limited which surprised me.

EXEL Juice Box. GOOD: Charges quickly, waterproof, has a lock BAD: Hove one nothing but problems and no support from customer service. Won't connect to the internet despite putting an WiFi extender in my garage, and no help from customer service; often does not charge, plug it in come back and nothing has changed, again no help from customer service because it is not connected and they can't get me connect; mounting on a lap sided exterior wall requires shims to make the wall flat for mounting, again no help from customer service. Plastic case and the lock are a joke, my best security is the power cable is plugged into a metal locked box.

You're asking to see a bright white light followed by lying down on your garage floor!
