26th July 2003 Tri Nations. New Zealand recorded their highest points total against Australia as they crushed the world champions in Sydney. Australia, who were sliding to their second defeat of this year's Tri-Nations, were completely outclassed. All Blacks winger Joe Rokocoko grabbed three of his side's seven tries in a hugely impressive win at the Olympic Stadium. This game was an opportunity for a young Dan Carter to prove himself in the all Blacks jersey. He was just 21-years-old in this game.

The last Greatest Wallaby team,oddly enough,if was a few of them,that started the demise of Australian Rugby,too much player power,too much talk and threats that if the coach doesn't go,we will,Gregan,Larkham,AAC,Mortlock,Giteau and a couple more,all rang the death bell due to their arrogance and talking out. Something you wouldn't hear an All Black do,ever,respect the jersey,you are just caretakers of it,and just a man.

Australian Rugby made some massive strategic blunders a few years before this. After winning the RWC in 1999, dominating NZ for a few years and about to host the RWC in 2003, they were in the best position to throw some money into the game and build for a strong future. Instead they burnt all their cash of a few gimmicky League recruits. 20 years on and they still haven't recovered from those decisions. A good lesson for any budding sports administration undergraduates out there.
@docgonzales
@docgonzales 3 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree, taking rugby off free to air tv and putting it exclusively on cable TV for Murdoch has caused way more damage to Australian rugby than spending cash on a few marquee players ( who were actually pretty effing good) . The lack of exposure to the average joe converts to lack of enthusiasm and a lack of participation at a youth level. If that league money was plowed into grassroots you'd still have low exposure and probably no 2003 final appearance, success buys participation and thats what the ARU banked on when they got those 3 ( as well as publicity they wouldnt have got in a crowded sports market)
@gooble69
@gooble69 3 жыл бұрын
@@docgonzales The League recruit strategy didn't happen until 2001 (Rogers & Sailor 2001, Tuqiri in 2002) but the Wallabies were selling out stadiums in 1999 (I was one of the world record setting 107000 crowd in '99), and 2000 (109000 a new record which still stands today). They didn't need any more exposure, it was at maximum already, they simply needed to keep the quality players coming through the system and keep winning games. Instead all the money went to a few converts, and the winning stopped, along with the crowds. The Wallabies last won the Bledisloe cup in 2002. Co-incidence? I think not. Compare to NZ which invests heavily into grass roots, and they keep producing superstars, trophies, and crowds.

This was one of the most dominant wins over the Wallabies by the All Blacks. A few weeks after this they reclaimed the Bledisloe in a much closer match and haven't relinquished it back to the Wallabies since. Then later in the year the Wallabies showed how much they'd learned from losing this match by winning the World Cup Semi Final through an early try and committed defence, that left the All Blacks with no answers. Interestingly enough, Eddie Jones - the coach of the Wallabies in 2003 - then went on to repeat the feat in 2019, this time as coach of England, who knocked out the All Blacks in the Semi Final stage of the 2019 World Cup in similar circumstances (and the same winning margin).

I met the O'Driscolls on that tour, the Dad is a hoot (they ate in the Restaurant I managed). The whole Lions Team came for dinner on the Wednesday before the 2nd test. And they were neither bitter or pissed at the time, more disappointed. And to think that Tana Umaga, who the year before won the fair-play award for saving Colin Charvis' life (potentialy), after Jerry Collins hit him so hard he swallowed his toungue, is a dirty player is quite insulting and is not based on anything except one singular moment.

Wilkinson really showed himself back when bringing England through to the 07 final, then learning French and leading Toulon to a historic European treble. So I wouldn't say it's clear. Yeah 2007 was one of the biggest missed blockbusters of the 2000s because they were both in excellent form although they did play each other again on 2009. Another arguably missed player was Elton Flatley, who may have been a bigger name than Giteau had he not had to retire. @Tj Hill Yeah ok. Wow. Didn’t know that one. That’s cool as. He ran some nice lines. I always wondered what carter would have looked like at full back. Did he have that 5th gear pace? His kicking game and vision was impeccable.

John Mitchell was doing a good job as coach until the unfortunate semi final loss in the World Cup and then was shafted by the NZ Rugby Union and replaced by Graham Henry who had more lives than a cat.
