Best Exterior Wood Filler: Garage Paint Project

It's NOT a boat video this week! In this video I try a new (to me anyway) waterproof outdoor wood filler/spackle to fill some divots and gaps in exterior wood siding before painting. So far, I've found this to be an AWESOME product for this application.

Thanks! I used this on my outdoor deck to fill cracks and hundreds of nail holes. After repainting, the 20 year old boards look all smooth snd brand new.

Platinum Patch is great! Easy to apply and just hit with sandpaper to get it level with the siding! Currently patching bad spots on the side of my house before the summer rains.

I think I will give this a shot. Restoring old porch rails and some of the thick spindles have shrunk and no longer reach the bottom rail so need to be filled after I refastened with nail gun.

My wood garage, I think built 1931, looks like this one. When it rains, the water comes in through the holes. I can’t afford to hire anyone so guess I’ll try this product. Thanks!

any experience with 3M Bondo wood filler? looks like it requires mixing, while DAP does not. i'll be filling in some rotten spots on a garage door panel.

That was the other product I was considering. Yes, requires mixing the hardener in but I think it should work just fine.

I don’t remember now but I’d try 120grit and see how it does.

Yes, not sure why it went away. Maybe COVID supply chain stuff. It is a great product and I’ve yet to see DAP replace it with another.

I just grabbed some of this to fill a rather large chipped off piece of the head board around the exterior, just under the roofing.. Want sure what kind of bondo to get or if to use the JB Weld Kwikwood putty stuff. But that would definitely need more sanding and this will hopefully work well. We'll find out lol. ( Edited after using ) we'll see how well it dries and holds up, honestly it seemed just like the "normal" wall / joint putty to me. Maybe a little thicker, but not sure how well it'll hold up when slapped on a little thicker. On a decent sized face board breakage, probably around 4 inches long x 1½ inches wide. That starts or ends at the edge, where it's deepest. As part of a larger break, I glued and pounded back in. So I have to fill it and reconstruct the edges corner. I feel like a bondo would probably work better. But to fill a bunch of small exterior chips and holes, this would probably work well

Good video. So glad you did not tell me to wear safety goggles, a mask, disconnect the battery, and remove the key. I plan on using that product on the worst siding ever produced, Masonite. Got some water damage, can’t replace the siding, so patch, primer, and paint will have to do.

We got a new roof put on and now I have to fill in all the holes because of wood bees. Any advice on how to stuff the holes most of the way so I can finish filling in the holes before painting?

Not sure. Maybe pound a dowel in them and flush trim? Or put this platinum patch in a ziplock bag, cut off a corner, and squeeze it in.

Is that primer you put on first after you sanded? How do you know that filler is the "best" as the title says?

First coat was a primer/paint combo. Worked just fine but needed a second coat for sure. “Best” is based on a bunch of research I did and reviews of all the various products available. I’m still happy with the results. Thanks for watching.

The product sheet says it’s not recommended for staining applications. Am I in trouble if I wanted to apply solid stain on it?

Sorry, I don’t know. I’d think solid stain would work though. That stuff is pretty opaque so I don’t think you’d see through it.

Yes, I think so. If it's a very smooth surface, you might scuff it a bit with some sandpaper to make sure it gets good adhesion but it should work. I don't have it near me but it says on the label all the different materials it can be used on.

Did you apply the primer before the sparkle? I find that everything adheres better if you first prime , then spakle then prime again before adding two coats of paint

I did not this time but that is an excellent tip. Thanks! It adhered well to the paint though.
