When caulking the nail heads.... Use a putty knife and go against the grain of the wood so it will leave the grain In the caulked spot, wipe the edges smooth. Looks better than the messy finger wipe. And while we're on caulking... Why in the heck don't you use a good grade caulk like Vulkem ( Urethane base) or OSI ( oil base ) for the bigger gaps for better results, instead of backer rod and latex/acrylic caulk that doesn't have a good grab or elasticity. The caulk I mentioned above not only has a flex rate up to 1/4 " but when you run a clean bead (not fingering the caulk) it looks phenomenal! Also some of the caulk I mentioned has texture in it so when caulking on the surface you have less flashing because of that texture.

you are right on. I am DONE with any white lighting. And the "siliconized " products are bad. osi is the best I've used, it's sometimes hard to paint over, but comes in colors.

I am painting my 1900 square foot home this weekend. I am using sherwin Williams everlast paint in dark blue. I am using a Graco X5 airless sprayer for the first time. I caulked a bunch last weekend but I didn’t do everything that you would. I just don’t have the patience to do it. Lol. But I got most of the stuff that really needed it. My wife will be helping. I am power washing tonight and then masking tomorrow and then we will start painting Saturday. The weather has been great here in Oklahoma and now it’s gonna be in the upper 80’s to low 90’s this weekend with wind gusts up to 16! It was supposed to be zero wind and cool but they changed it. Hopefully I don’t run into any issues and we can finish this weekend. Thanks for all the help you provide. I wouldn’t have had the first clue about what to due without your help.

My prep: Scrape all loose paint with a small paint scraper while listening to tunes with my Bluetooth ear muffs on. Replace any rotten lowers with the same siding (usually 12 inch rips). Hammer in all protruding nails, caulk then wipe/scrub all surfaces with a large sponge using bleach/water solution, rinse, let dry then check for new loose paint. Use primer letting it dry over night. Then paint using a quality paint.

My house is a new build. I thought the flashing card was required and caulking was not on cement board siding for all butt joints. Help! My house is jnder warranty still. Should i have my contraftor come back and fix it? It would require him to replace all siding.

Ditto, ditto, ditto on new guys caulking around the entryway. The only thing worse is a new guy, young guy, who's also a relative so you're cautious about giving guidance. : ) Seriously though, this is especially true with the newer, more dynamic, flexing caulks that protect you from splitting. These caulks are great, but they skin over into a rubbery texture that is very hard to sand off and redo. The skin tends to coagulate faster into a granular texture that doesn't smooth well. Hot weather, hot storage amplifies these qualities. Lastly, because of it's flex, it's not as good for smoothing over glops with vinyl or other fillers, unless it's touching a short run of siding that won't move. When you sell that house the entry experience sets the tone. When you wife has friends over to see the new wallpaper, same thing.

Hey Chris , quick question . I recently got slow with work so I went to help another painter . He was using the sherwin Williams spackle to float all the areas where the wood chipped back after we scrapped . I didn’t say nothing cause it’s not my job and I didn’t want to be “ that guy “ but I felt like it was just for sure going to fail not to mention he was priming the bare spots with latex primer before we applied the spackle and then sealed it with a latex paint close to the color we were going to use . Was I wrong Thinking it was going to fail ? Will it hold up ? It was a lot of spackle almost floating full boards at times . I felt when that wood expands and shrinks that spackle will not do the same and fail .

Yea man big pet peeve is when you're still in the process of prepping or even just not done w the job yet and someone comes up and points out something you haven't gotten to yet, like you missed it lol. I spend a day or two at the end just walking around the house over and over looking for anything I missed or can improve, so very little gets by me, and it is a bit irritating when they think you're not seeing something. It's like you mowing the grass and in the middle someone comes and points out the section of yard you've yet to mow, saying "you missed some" lmao.

We'll it's that time again when I have to paint the outside of the house. We live in California in a manufactured house with siding where the panels meet side by side. So the house likes to shift with weather conditions and the caulk where the siding meets separates. I'm sure I used the wrong kind of caulk. I have an older house, built in 1953, with painted cedar shakes. Many of the shakes have gaps that run vertically between two adjacent shakes. This looks bad and probably isn't good in terms of water getting in and behind the siding. Should I caulk these gaps before painting? As a novice observer, I'm wondering "if caulking joints creates issues with defining edges when you finally paint?" Caulking seems to blend sharp edges into one, fluid seam. How do you approach a soft seam between two, distinct colors? Don't you worry about caulk beads affecting the final color? Painting a caulked surface is a lot different than painting a primed, wood surface, right? Caulking also is time consuming and raises the potential for not caulking everything uniformly. You may forget to caulk a window top seam or didn't do one side exactly like the other side of a house. I'd love to see the ugliness of really having repairs in the prep stages. I'm talking like rotted, exterior corners under eaves or on visible areas that have been compromised by water or sun damage. Hundred year old homes must be very challenging and expensive for painters that don't estimate properly. Sorry, just so many details I'm curious about. At least you'll never run out of new topics for videos.

I watch your videos all the time, thanks for making them. I'm 71 years old and I am about to " try " and paint my single story desert home. I'm on a limit income. The reason I am painting it is because you can't find anyone that wants to work in this town. Well, that is unless you have Big $$ and a BIG job for them to do. I just bought a Graco Mangnum Prox 17 airless spray painter. I'm not in the best of health, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta go right? I guess my biggest question is: Can you spray paint a house, sections at a time. Like one side and then another even though you may not be able to paint the whole thing at one time. I know you are a pro and a lot younger and you can probably knock out a house in 1 or may 2 days after doing all the prep work. I have a pressure washer and all the tools. I just need to pace myself, can that be done? Thanks for making the videos. :o)

I'm currently an apprentice painter, so I may not be fully qualified to answer this question. however, you can do sections at a time as long as the is a stopping point. the stopping point must be like the end of a wall or something not in the middle cause you will get a shut mark ( a visible starting and stopping point) in the paint. hope this helps

Thanks for the information, it helped a lot. I'm still waiting to get started on painting the house. We've had 65mph winds, and rain not to mention I had to put painting the house on hold because I had to get on the roof and replace blown off shingles. lol You never know what the weather is going to do down here In Dogpatch. Thanks again for the reply. :o)

When you caulk holes like that it shows and looks ugly as you can’t sand it. In Australia we only use caulking for gaps, not holes. For holes we use a filler, either pre mixed or powered you add water and mix yourself, you can sand these fillers. No one would let us get away with caulking holes like that lol.

So what can someone do that's trying to paint trim using a pole to reach a high spot? Also what is wrapped around the lights next to the garage in this video? Looks all crumpled up. That's a good cover.
