I reread the notes on the pattern for increasing the size to men's size by adding 1/2 inch to seam. To print this size pattern set your page to print at 120% (this is on most print set for the page you're going to print). This gave me a pattern to copy. Thanks for this tutorial and pattern. I love it.

I am not a sewer by any means and have made a few mask for the family. I love this tutorial and it looks so easy to follow compared to a lot of the other ones. What is the reasoning for the zigzag stitch? Sorry if that’s a stupid question.
@LanaUnderPressure

Awe thank you so much for your kind words. I am not a professional sewer at all. Completely self taught, which is why I wanted to make this video because I find the videos by professional sewers go too fast or use terms I don't understand. I learned from a sewer friend that the zig zag stitch holds much tighter than the straight especially when going through multiple layers. And since the side area is where a lot of tension will be from the loops puling, I wanted a stitch that would hold really well.

I have spent hours watching videos and gotten so confused. I just want to make a cute madk I can wear without breaking out. I loved that your video is in inches. My question is how can I lock a stitch without back stitching my machine doesn't have it. And I have issues with getting a straight seem any suggestion would be very helpful.
@LanaUnderPressure
@LanaUnderPressure 3 жыл бұрын
I am sorry it took me so log to respond. Usually I can comment right away but things have been crazy in the Perez household. Hi. Glad my video is helpful. To lock a stitch without back stitching, you can just lift the foot with the needle still in the down position and turn the fabric 180 degrees, stitch a few stitches and then turn it back again and stitch a few more. Ironing also helps lock in stitches. Getting a straight seam really just takes practice. I am a self taught sewer. I practice on old clothes a lot. Draw a line on an old t shirt and some circles and just practice sewing on the line. A good tip is to not look at the needle but look at the seam measurement on the machine or the foot. Hope this helps.

I made your mask and it turned out great! I used T-shirt material for the lining to make it more comfy. I'm using a similar pattern but found it far easier to trace it onto a folded piece of paper and then open for a whole mask pattern so the two fabrics can be place same sides together (right/right or wrong/wrong) and avoid any fiddling trying to align the folds which is prone to inaccuracy.
@LanaUnderPressure
@LanaUnderPressure 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea. I'm terrible at cutting so I find for me the smaller the pattern, the less actual cutting. And it really works well when I stack fabrics so I can cut multiple masks at the same time.

Easy mask to make. Do you have a medium adult mask pattern? I feel the large seems to big for my face. Thanks.
@rkng1
@rkng1 3 жыл бұрын
Most of these mask patterns can be enlarged or decreased by measuring around the pattern and either adding or subtracting 1/8. to 1/4" all around. Sometimes you only need to increase or decrease the sides/cheek. This will add a total of either 1/4" or 1/2" all the way around. If you don't have a quilting ruler, a protractor or school ruler will help. Put current pattern on your cloth and use a light pencil mark to mark increase on fabric. If making several masks, I find redrawing a pattern on construction paper works well. Cardboard is also good but hard to cut out. Hope this helps. Stockings from dollar store can be cut and used for ear loops also.

I bought a kids mask for myself when it was the only one available. Later they recvd more inventory. I held mine againt the packaged adult size, to compare, it was 1" larger all the way around. The extra large was 1.5 " larger on all sides. Laying flat & folded in half the design of this mask pattern & my kids mask are very close. I found a good method to test your patten. Is by cutting it out of napkins or coffee filters (finished size w/o seam allowance) then scotch taping the seams. Then you can custom fit the mask to your face. Afterwards you can add whichever seam allowance you want.

Great video and instructions. What could I do to adapt the pattern for kids? I would need a smaller pattern for a 5 year old. Many thanks and I subscribed.
@LanaUnderPressure
@LanaUnderPressure 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you so much. I didn't measure a kids pattern because my children are grown, so I didn't want to post a pattern that I want sure fit. But you could use the female pattern and just measure 1/2 inch in from all the edges and cut it so it's 1/2 inch smaller. Before you sew it, pin the darts then fit it to your childs face to see where you need to take it in more. That's how I created the other patterns. Once you have a good fit (remember allow extra for seam allowance) then before you sew, trace it out on paper so you have a pattern.

Hello, how do I make the mask lay flush to the face? I poked out some on the sides 😫
@anng2113
@anng2113 3 жыл бұрын
What I do and tell the people I make them to do is pull the lower elastic on either until the side of the mask gathers a little and then adjust the knot where it is tied. Makes for a very snug fit.
@LanaUnderPressure
@LanaUnderPressure 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly what she said! Just pull so it gathers more. You can also cut in the sides a little narrower before sewing.

Hi! Yes I do. I used a store bought mask that I really liked, folded it, and traced the pattern. Then I tweaked it to fit better. Most of my sewing I do making patterns from clothes rather than store bought patterns.

Is there a men’s and children’s pattern?
@LanaUnderPressure
@LanaUnderPressure 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. The men's is in the description below. I don't have small kids so I didn't feel comfortable creating a pattern I couldn't try on or test. However, you can add or subtract length or trace a store bought mask and use my directions to sew.

Sorry it took so long to reply, I went back to teaching to help out the schools here during COVID. The darts on both patterns are 1 1/2 inches but you can make them longer if you need more room.

@LanaUnderPressure
@LanaUnderPressure 4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I'm not sure why that would be. Make sure you turn in the edges of the part that is open on the side and press with an iron. Also, you can always even it out when you fold in the sides to make the channel for the elastic.

Hi, do you have a pattern for children? Thank you in advance.
@LanaUnderPressure
@LanaUnderPressure 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm so sorry I don't. I didn't want to ad a pattern that I couldn't try myself, and since i don't have small kids anymore I didn't want to give the incorrect size. However, I created this pattern just by tracing a store bought mask and tweaking it a bit. You can do the same if you have a Childs mask and just use my instructions.

You don’t need the extra side pieces if you want to make a pocket for a filter. Just edge finish the sides with a serger or fold the ends/stitch down. Then finish as the mask without the pocket. No need to have overlap, the filter stays put and is quickly removed for wash
@LanaUnderPressure
@LanaUnderPressure 3 жыл бұрын
I have actually made a few masks that way (Though I don't have a serger so I have to fold and stitch to make a finished edge. However, I found this way The mask is the same thickness from edge to edge and sits a little better plus people seem to like the 2 layers all the way around. But you are 100% correct, and people could definitely save time and do it your way. Thanks.

Great question. I have used everything from child's dance tights from Walmart or leggings from Costco. It really is what you find the most comfortable. Actually any material that stretches and rolls in instead of fraying (like some t-shirts) will work.
