Good overview. Raising rabbits on a small scale is very efficient. The manure is worth almost as much as the meat in the long run.

I really like your reuse of stuff and ideas of how to approach tasks. The concrete block risers for the pails are useful even for people shorter than you are! The collection system is neat, as is the way the rabbit beans "freely slide" out of the troughs...

Great information, Can you add to it regarding rate of coverage. You mention emptying once a week, but not how that equates to coverage or how many rabbits for a specific garden size. I am sort of detailed around numbers and was wondering if layering the tea and solids in a compost been might be good or create a stinky mess? -MG
@WineberryHillАй бұрын
The supply of manure swings wildly based on population at the time. When I have grow-outs (young rabbits) I need to empty the trays every other day. When it's like that I will often just use it straight as fertilizer/mulch. There is a little more odor with that method. To a certain extent odor comes with the territory. It's just the scent of life in motion!
@sharalynsena5146Ай бұрын
You have a fabulous setup!!! I will never have anything even close to that, but I didn't have a garden & access to rabbit pellets, which I just put directly into my garden beds. Is there a downside to doing it that way.
@WineberryHillАй бұрын
Thanks, yep, you can put the pellets directly in… it just takes longer.
@j.d.preppingerie6522Ай бұрын
I have chickens now and looking at rabbits, i live in Michigan any ideas on a breed? To eat and use the fertilizer.
@WineberryHillАй бұрын
Hey J.D. My main focus was meat production, so a good meat to bone ratio was important. My buck is a American Chinchilla/New Zealand mix and the does are both New Zealand.

Do you have a video on the rabbit hutch design with that manure collection feature? Also, have you not gotten the same results by placing manure directly in the beds and then watering?
@WineberryHillАй бұрын
No videos yet. I use the fertilizer this way to maximize the access to the nutrients. Placing the manure in the beds is much slower and more weather dependent (rain).
@dawnburton5961Ай бұрын
Excellent idea! We are trying to come up with a good design for 2 does and a buck, then rabbit tractors for the babies. Any suggestions?
@WineberryHillАй бұрын
Tractors are a little trickier (not impossible) for rabbits because of their digging skills. I entertained the idea of going that route with mine but ultimately decided against it because of how easily they can pick up wild viruses from the ground, tracked in by the local fauna.
@dawnburton5961Ай бұрын
@@WineberryHill I didn't know about that. Guess I'll have to look into that. Was trying to find a way to feed them for free before they went in the freezer. The parents will be in cages for sure.
@WineberryHillАй бұрын
Survey the wild plants around you. In my case I have a lot of forsythia bushes, and maple/oak trees. They love the leaves and branches from those plants. There are myriads of other plants like these. Along those lines look into "pollarding". This is a great way to produce a lot of tender leafy stems from trees like maple and oak. I also have some sections of timothy grass growing near the hutches...great fresh and dried.
@DeborahStacy-z9uАй бұрын
where did you get your rabbits and do you have plans for their hutches?
@WineberryHillАй бұрын
Facebook groups in my area. I might make the plans available in the future

We've talked about chickens and rabbits for our 2-acre property. I'm a Southern boy so I am wondering how you keep the rabbits from freezing to death over the winter! What's your MO? Also, what breed do you have? Finally, what's the setup in front of the hutches, with the bins and the little solar panel?
@WineberryHillАй бұрын
Rabbits live for cold weather. Here is a great video about how cold: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKndg4Kqf6mYbas I will be doing something similar. My does are New Zealand and my buck is NZ/American Chinchilla Mix. Those are planters in front with a rotating crop of random fodder plants. Currently It's raddish, mainly for the young greens. This little solar panel powers a bug zapper.

Do you have video how you take care for your rabbits during winter time? Guess that is during outside are freezing, snow and low temperatures?
@WineberryHillАй бұрын
Not yet. Rabbits thrive in cold weather...it's the hot weather that is tough on them.
@SYSSYSnameАй бұрын
@@WineberryHill I agree with you still also in winter times wild rabbits make tunnels and underground shelter where they thrive in cold weather. So you have your rabbits also in winter cold temperatures in same cages all the time? Maybe you should post new video regarding raising and maintain rabbits thru whole year 👍
