Hey Summer Rayne! evergreengirl57 here. The video totally answered my question and was very helpful. It's only recently, as I've added more plants to my collection, that I've been more intentional about fertilizing. I was originally keeping notes in a notebook, but the spreadsheet is definitely more efficient. Thanks for going over the different types of fertilizer you use, as well.

Definitely one of the more ancient varieties. Funny because I just went fossil hunting at home in PA and found some of its ancestors and brought the stones home with me. The Selaginella grows with my ferns quite well.

Hi Summer! I recently found your channel and LOVE it! Thanks for all the great tips! I'm getting my feet wet with indoor gardening and experimenting with houseplants. I was wondering - do you have a specific resource for gaining knowledge of each plant? For example, when you aquire a new plant do you have a certain resource for learning it's fertilization requirements, light requirements, etc? The tags that come with plants are so vague!

I just found your channel, and it’s awesome! Do you grow Colocasia indoors?? I usually use more slow release fertilizer, and I have 1/2 compost in my potting mix. I also use water from my fish tank and koi pond for my plants... although the pond’s nitrates are close to zero because of all the aquatic plants... great explanations for everything!

Just a tip since you have soooo many plants. If you hit CTRL+F and enter the name of the plant excel will take you to the first time the word appears as well as highlight any other time it appears in the spreadsheet.

I have a similar spreadsheet and it helps me a lot. But I don't keep taxonomic details since I can find them online. I find that to be helpful as I can in that way add more columns that are truly for the plants care only. I personally don't fertilize that much - usually twice per year, once in spring and in the summer respectively - and my plants are happy and free of pests mostly. Fertilizing often means more troubles with plant pests 🙂...

Thanks for these videos! They're so helpful. Up until now I haven't been in the habit of fertilizing my plants regularly but this video has inspired me to start. I have a beautiful and very large cactus that has recently gotten very sick. First, it was infested with mealy bugs so I cleaned them off and took it outside on a sunny day for about an hour. The mealy bugs seem to be gone now but the tops of the cactus are a dark grey color and I'm wondering if there's any way to heal it? I also have a pretty leggy bougainvillea that is now happily growing many leaves on the outer, weaker branches and I'm wondering if there's any good way to prune it back or encourage growth on the thicker branches that are closer to the base?

Would you be able to upload this spreadsheet? (as possibly a downloadable) I'm mostly interested in the light preferences of the plants you have listed. You have SOOO many, and it's all pretty and organized right in this list. As well as because Google searches tend to become redundant in what they pull up (not much variety) when researching if one doesn't have the specific name of the plant.

Thank you for this very informative video, and what the numbers on the fertilizers mean (i never knew what it was) and also how to fertilize the plants. BUT ... I just had a question that i don't believe you covered in this video, so I'll ask, and perhaps the plant community can chip in to help me out. How will one know that their plant is in need of fertilization? Are produced leafs way smaller? Is there going to be a dramatic decrease in new leafs? Will the plant die eventually? Are leafs not as green as they should be? I love watching your videos, i hope that you continue to do "home plant make overs" where you teach people who really want more plants in their homes, and you help them out with their lighting situations and what plants are best for them depending on their lifestyle! (i really enjoyed the one you did with the guy in his apartment)

Very informative. I noticed really increased root growth after starting applying a seaweed extract concentrate. Not technically a fertilizer but I really observed a difference. Some people swear by using Michigan State University fertilizer. Ordered some. Also using Dynagrow orchid fertilizer that I read is not salt based. I also noticed great growth with composted horse manure. It does not smell. Usually in September / October can be found as a closeout bargain at HD or Lowes. I have a sprayer like yours, but I use more the 1 gallon one that has a wand. Easier for watering pots on shelves without spills. I wish all fertilizer would give how many parts per part of water like 1:1xxx rather than spoons per gallon that is hard to scale up or down. ml per l is so much easier. I wanted to get that fish / seaweed extract but the smell was like rotting fish sauce. I wonder if diluted the smell would dissipate.

Hi, great video, thank you. I would also love to download your spreadsheet, it is wonderful! I have a variety of indoor plants and finally found a fertilizer that has been suitable to use as essentially a multipurpose solution. It's a 15-9-12 and is called Osmocote Smart Release Plant Food Plus for Indoor and Outdoor. The granules are coated with a resin (I am questioning the safety of this?..) so that the nutrients are released slowly, allowing you to go up to 6 months between fertilizations. Any thoughts on this type of fertilizer?

I see that your notes specifically say not to soak your air plants. Can you expand more on this? I usually soak mine once every 1-3 weeks and leave them to dry upside down before returning them to their homes to prevent any rotting. I will sometimes bring them into the bathroom while I shower as well, but I've been meaning to get a mister so I can mist them too. Do you have any concerns about water from a mister collecting in the plant base and causing rotting? Or is that only a concern with soaking?

Might I suggest using organic fertilizers, composted duff/soil, and mulch. These alternatives to conventional indoor/outdoor gardening practices can go a long way in maintaining the health of plants, and reduce degradation of the soil of the potted plants. I would recommend using freshwater aquarium water (except if you are not keeping African ciclids or tanks with high pH water), as a source of water that is already chlorine free, with trace amounts of nutrients already in it. With aquarium water, I think you can fertilize less with liquid ferts, so monthly application for most tropical house plants should do. For blooming plants, unfortunately, to keep flowers coming, and keep them healthy, an organic, specialized fert may be needed as it takes a lot of energy for a given plant to produce flowers. Not using a synthetic NPK fert helps train your plants to take in CO2 more efficiently, and for the plants to "trade" liquid carbon" that it produces and sends down to its roots for beneficial bacteria and fungi living in the soil. This maintains soil quality. If this is done outdoors with perennials and native plants, shrubs, tress, etc., it is one step in the direction of saving money, natural resources, and making a creating a carbon sink. You don't need to replace depleted soil as often, or at all, indoors or outdoors. Just my opinion. Feel free to let me know if this cannot apply in certain houseplant situations. I love Summer Rayne Oakes and would love to hear what she thinks about ecologically sounds gardening practices indoors.

I started using Schultze fertilizer in the early 70s..adding the blue dropper full to my water EVERY time I watered as per instructions. Is this a good thing? Or would it stress the plants. To me it would be like planting in compost where the plant feeds as it needs? Thank you!

TBH I've actually been thinking about gathering dirty water from all of my betta fish in one bottle and fertilize my plants with it. It seems like a quicker and less stressful way to get your plants to thrive. Are you still using this method ?

Hello Summer, No offents on your knowledge on fertilizer, but 10-10-10 and 20--20-20 have the same ratios (all equal), just the 10-10-10 one as half the concentration of the 20-20-20. Since both seams to be chemical fertilizer, one or the other will do the same just the liquid one will probably cost you a lot more than the power one. Fertilizer are about application concentration (ppm | part per million). So 20-20-20 at X amount per volume of water can be the same concentration as 10-10-10.

You might be horrified... but around late March, early April...or even May, I insert Jobe sticks in my houseplants (how many depends on the pot size) for the growing season. So far, no problem with the plants. I also use Osmocote , the slow release fertilizer granules . I don't use both together, it's either one or the other in the plants. You have very good advice on fertilizers, and I love your videos. You have a lot of knowledge, and your home is beautiful...so many beautiful plants, of course. Just a general opinion... how do feel about Jobe sticks and the granules? I'm very impressed and really enjoy your videos. Thank you!
