Looking forward to shooting my George Bate Wildfowler "Lump O' Gun" I won in a previous Holt's auction. Seems to tick the boxes you mentioned. Thanks for your help in acquiring it. And thanks to Holt's for giving us the opportunity to see all the wonderful firearms.

That Wild is lovely. I bought a very pretty, but sleeved, 1907 Hellis sideplate for about £500 20 years ago and I love it. I really don't understand why sleeving affects the value so much - but I didn't buy it as an investment. I bought it to shoot!

The Thomas Wild please - lovely. As you say, may be sleeved but that makes if very usable in the field today. One thing still missing from my cabinet is a hammer gun :D

Ps, 3” chambers on an old gun aren’t suitable for modern 3” cartridges, but suit heavy loaded 2 3/4” like a peach! And it’s nice to see that these bigger old guns are no longer getting passed off as “Live Pigeon” guns

I have a Henry Tolley 11-bore which was sleeved to 16, and speaking of barrel-heavy, it is the very definition. I go with the hammer guns every time. In fact, a new addition arrives Wednesday. It never ends.

That Lewis & Son Boxlock is beautiful. The slight rack at the hand could (should?) be repaired before use. Such repairs are really quite easy. You can do it yourself or have a gunsmith do it for you. My introduction to hammer guns came at my local club's trap range. A fellow showed up with a hammer gun and we all had a go. Cocking the hammers was like stepping back into history.

That was great!! Just a idea how about doing something like this each time ? Johnny‘s top 10 side by side for under 1k ?? As I one of the guys looking for one just to shoot 1 or 2 times a year only.

Paid $35 for my very nice Greener 12b Damascus, $42 for my first Parker VH and $125 for the second, also a VH but with beautiful wood. Those were the good old days when real bargains could be had. Several others were gifts from friends.

Does sleeving change the gauge of the barrels? For instance, 12 gauge sleeved into 16 gauge?
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Not generally no, as you are reusing a portion of the original chambers. Sure it could be done but the extra weight in the breach end wouldnt make for too sweet a gun.
@iankelley7574
@iankelley7574 Жыл бұрын
@@tgsoutdoors Thank you for answering! I know there's a gunsmithing process that is referred to as sleeving that reduces the gauge size. Maybe it's a difference in English vs American gunsmithing terminology. My gunsmithing awareness is very limited.

@danhill6333
@danhill6333 3 жыл бұрын
If you're referring to importing, yes they can. The sweet spot seems to be three firearms from what another TGS supporter indicated. Although I just found out that rifles are actually easier to export from the UK than shotguns. Go figure. Maybe I need to also be looking for some rifles to bid on. What say you Jonny Carter?

@@danhill6333 I guess TGS is the mfg or the seller/ distributor? Is there a distributor in the states? Here you would need a FLL ( I hope I got this right) dealer to take possession.

@@peterbergeris6510 TGS is a retailer. Holt's is who would handle the export paperwork on the UK end. Griffin & Howe in NJ was recommended by another TGS supporter/follower. My memory was apparently a bit cloudy on cost. Approximately $2K for the four he had imported. He'd indicated much of that was a flat fee. That included export, shipping, insurance, import, and import markings.

@@tgsoutdoors you showed a nice one back previously that’s in the Holt auction. My experience is that they can vary widely from very basic to not too bad . Never in the same category as that lovely Miroku sidelock or a good Spanish.
