I just love your sweet family ! It's sometimes so difficult to get children to eat fish and I see that one has left his chips and eaten all the fish. My parents retired to a small town of the southern coast of Englad and my children just loved fish and chips which, being on the sea-side, were so fresh - just down the road the fishing boats came in and sold their fish to anyone who wanted some. In England, we add vinegar which gives a great flavour and when I was a youngster (73 now), they were wrapped in newspaper (with an inner wrapping of white paper).

Many places in the UK have great Chish n Fips. Subtle differences from various areas, makes it impossible to claim one is the best. Happy you had yours with mushy peas, its very traditional to do so. They're not exclusively a dip for the chips however & are used to flavour the fish too. Haddock is my favourite fish from the chippy, many Northerners prefer it to Cod. Happy enjoying the UK! 🙂👍🇬🇧🇺🇸

I fish the breakwater in the distance in the summer. Part of the reason I moved to Edinburgh was to be able to sea fish in a city. In terms of The Fishmarket it is a top tier eatery and no mistake. Was back at the takeaway side last week. Always good. Before they opened it I always said Anstruther was best in Scotland. Not now. But the real best, the crown, that'll be the chip shops around Durham (also an amazing historic city worth a visit and to Beamish outdoor museum). Why are they better, well Fishmarket and most places are fighting with one arm tied behind their backs using vegetable shortening. In Durham they are holdouts and still cook in dripping (beef fat) and it is amazing. If you teamed fishmarket skill with that ingredient I can't imagine. Anyway I just hiked 40 miles across the Cairngorms so I'll away and nurse my 150+ midgie bites.

A matter of taste with the mushy peas, i prefer them just as they are & the fish n chips lightly salted. No vinegar or pepper with mine. Subtle but great!

Yeah I only recently realised the white pepper and vinegar thing. Works well on eggs too. We were right in the UK to take black pepper on board when I was a kid but dumping white pepper too was a mistake.

@@scootbenet I am a freshly ground black pepper person 99% of the time but mushy peas, tomato soup and beetroot just have to have white pepper. I usually just put salt on eggs but will try the white pepper there too
