There was no need to pull the race card nor was it Australian for the wife to say she was ashamed to be Australian. I'm an Australian born of Chinese/Vietnamese ancestry and I get full body searched and swabbed each and every time I travel. Not a big deal at all. Security/custom officers are doing their job protecting Australia and I respect and am grateful for what they do. I've been taught by my elders to respect and love this country as an Australian and yes, I am proud to be Australian. Same cannot be said for many who come to this country and start their new life here. Sure there is the inconvenience factor of being searched but if you've got nothing to hide, then why the drama? My Australian "white" family member have experienced the same for all inbound/outbound flights. Don't feel like you're alone when it comes to colour/race profiling. You're only a victim if you decide to proceed with that narrative. If anything, officers are more disappointed when they find nothing. So thankyou to all the staff that do their job and put up with this kind of ridiculousness

The airport workers trying to catch a bird reminded me of a similar situation. I worked at a hospital and there was a bat flying past the nurses station one night. A coworker and I managed to get it trapped between doors at either end of a corridor that didn’t have patient rooms. We called security for assistance as housekeeping wouldn’t help. The security guard was ridiculing us because we were afraid of a bird but I repeatedly told him it was a bat. He didn’t believe me. He swaggered into the area with a bucket that he planned on catching it and we were able to watch him through the small window. He got close to the bat, but when he raised the bucket to try and trap it, the bat flew straight at him. The man tossed the bucket and literally ran straight at the door we were at, but it had taken us a bit to get the bat away from the patient areas and the bat was right behind him so we held the door shut. He was begging for us to open the door and we told him to wait until it moves away or go to the opposite end where another nurse was at as we didn’t want it loose again. Another employee went in the opposite door, brought a broom and a bucket to try and capture it but the guard wouldn’t help. The other employee finally had it contained so we opened the door and as the guard came out, I facetiously asked him why he was so afraid of a harmless bird. He stalked off with a red face everyone laughing at him. We occasionally see loose birds at large grocery stores or hardware stores, but the employees generally ignore them.

Immigration have the right to inspect question everyone regardless of times. From the US where jobs abound and have only $200 doesn't make sense. Having enough money while travelling is a form of security. Also should carry travel insurance just in case of medical emergency.

Roberto demanding those 2 customers officers explain for the 27million people of Australia making him feel a certain way was pretty insane. Don't know why his wife feels embarrassed to be Australian and not for her husband acting like a toss. If he behaved normally he might not have issues... I get the feeling he was walking through customs staring down all the officers probably expecting to get searched and got searched only to act like they fell for his trapcard.. like nah you were acting like a toss and you deserve to have your time wasted the next 7 times you come to Australia.

It can of course be for various reasons, like acting weird, but 7 out of 7 times when something like 1/100 gets searched does indicate something... It's not very far fetched to think it has to do with race.

If he thinks Australia needs to get its act together, then maybe he needs to look for a better place to live !! I'll bet Nigeria wouldn't be on his list. As for his "wife" who's ashamed to call herself Australian, same goes for her. Can anyone imagine what Nigerian customs would do if an Australian arrived there and behaved like he did? !!

What an act. Always the RACE card and it doesn't matter which country they come from. If he doesn't like having his luggage searched and asked questions he shouldn't go th Ausstralia he is not above the law. I have been to Australia mamy, many time and my bags are always searched and questions asked. I have no problem with that as they are doing their job. Well done Australia.

Australia is packed with racism, people don't understand Roberto's frustration. As an Asian student I was asked to do a random drug swipe/explosive swipe, all the swipe test there is, almost everything I cross the boarder (even travelling out). One time I jokingly asked the officer, is that the way I look? I get asked to do this "random" test consistently (of courses he said no), while my partner who always travelled with me never got asked. In my case, it's just a swipe test which I was sure it will always return negative, as a criminology student I really didn't mind, but to have the treatment that Roberto was experiencing every time, it infuriates.
