In today's video I visit one of the top 50 chip shops in the UK according the Fry Magazine!
It's called Callaway's, and it's tucked away in the Fordington area of Dorchester. It's only a tiny little place, but apparently they bang out some fabulous Fish & Chips - well it should be if it's award winning....

Wow, best chippy you've reviewed IMO. Everything was great, the location, the price, the fish looked superb and the rest looked really good quality as well. They well deserve their top 50 status.

It was absolutely fab, it really was. I was intrigued by how the hake would be, being a couple of quid cheaper than the cod, but it was excellent. As you say, well deserving of their award winning status. I will definitely return there that's for sure!

Yeah, over the spring and summer I am gonna try and get around as many places as possible, some in premium locations, some off the beaten track a little more, see what I can get!

Absolutely well worth the money,homemade fish cake looked excellent but battered hake wins the prize for me. Looked a good old fashioned chippy. Great review👊

Yeah, a proper hidden gem this place… great ingredients treated with care. The hake was incredible, luckily I don’t live closer as I would be there far too often!

Great video. Greeno. We go to Dorchester quite often. I live in wells Somerset. Will definitely try this one out looks amazing. Also will try the Weymouth places too. Nice to have some reviews locally to me. 👍🏻

Can't deny that did look beautifully cooked and delicious. Never known a chippy that served lemon wedges with takeaway orders; shows that it is a premium place.

Hi Cassandra - yeah the lemon wedges were a nice touch. Unusual to find a food outlet paying so much attention to detail but still at a more than reasonable price - a real hidden gem!

It's been rare to find it on chippy menus here as it's not a traditional fish, but it's starting to pop up now, as it's a little cheaper than cod/haddock and has a better name than pollock.

I've never heard of a fish cake with mashed potatoes, ( in the States) but I have the ingredients to try it today... Tartar sauce is almost always served with fish and chips here.... Is it popular in the UK? Thank you.... What a delicious looking meal....

Yes, tartare sauce is the traditional fish and chip accompaniment here too. If you do try to make a fish cake I hope you enjoy it - I think they're great !

Cracking bit of fish, good crispy batter. Proper portion of chips & a good old-fashioned fish cake. A brace of wally's. Fantastic. And all from the Dolls house sized chippy. Knock Out🥊and value for money. Cheers Allan&Family

I'm a Northerner who loves the South and tells everyone that it's just as cheap to eat darn sarf if you shop around , this was such excellent value for money and that fish cake to die for. This chippy only 10 miles out of Weymouth and the Isle of Portland. Next time I'm down this is on my radar , cheers fella 👍

Yeah, if you stay away from the tourist traps then there is still some decent value to be had down here in Dorset. I do hope that you try Callaway’s next time you are in that neck of the woods, it’s well worth it!

This place is absolutely fabulous. Tucked away in a lace you'd be unlikley to come across it by chance, but well worth looking up if you're ever in the area!

Yeah, this place is a real hidden gem. Absolutely cracking. Can’t recall ever having fish and chips in Ireland. I used to visit Limerick a lot with work, but normally we’d just be heading out for drinks in the evening 🤣

@@GreenoEats Let’s not knock the few pints buddy 🤣 but when it comes to Irish chippy food I unfortunately know what I’m talking about. I’m a delivery driver for one just outside Dublin so I know all about the price and what goes on in the kitchen area’s. Everything about your vid is spot on. We produce lukewarm soggy batter, rubber batted sausages, not a hint of mushy peas or any pea product and EVERYTHING is bought in. So consider yourself lucky my friend. 👍

When I was arranging trips to Limerick the guys there would always want me to come on a Thursday so we could go for beers Thursday night. Better to be hungover on someone else's time in work on the Friday than their own time on the weekend ha ha!

Ha ha, I would never support the Wolves pal. Been there twice. Got a half eaten pie launched at me one time, and accused of having an unhealthy interest in youngsters another, just cos the Cherries were beating or had beaten them. So we're on solid ground mate! Cracking chippy isn't it, well deserving of their award winning status! Really pleased to have found it, and will return for sure!!

Most good Fish and chip shops will do lightly battered is you ask. Benefit of this also is its freshly cooked for you.

Both hake and pollock to me seem too soft and soapy, although maybe that is just in the cooking as their flesh is softer than cod. However for another feast for less than £10, there is not too much to complain about. In Ireland a wally is a stupid person i.e. the same as we would call an eejit. But when I looked it up, wally is a gherkin so named in the South East/London area of England. 🤣
