Sorry but you are attacking the wrong people. Few people (other than the "celeb" names attached) start a business wishing to "rip people off" but councils, government and commercial property owners have no such scruples. Every town/city has the same problem. Start a business, have some success then watch it destroyed by local rate hikes, tax take and rent increases. Only the big corporate businesses (and "charity" rip offs) can survive. And then they have a monopoly.

I was having a gripe to my local chippy owner about the rising costs of fish and chips. He then proceeded to tell me that the last few years he’d been pushed to brink. He’s shut his seated restaurant - only opens 3 days Thur - Fri because he said energy costs (lighting, heating), council business rates sky high. He told me that cooking oil used to be £14 per vat it’s now £28, price of cod / haddock astronomical - esp if London based. He doesn’t have a fish market on his doorstep. He said cost of potatoes has also sky rocketed. He said he and his family have been in the fish a chip business for 50 years and he has never known it so bad. It’s not just about the fish a chips, it’s all the other overheads as well - rental, energy, staff, business rates, rising food and distribution costs. When someone who has been doing it for 20+ years wants to throw the towel in - you know it’s not good. I was so upset to hear it pushed him to such a desperate place. At the end of the day they also have to earn a living and support their families. ps he also told me that a lot of f&c owners had resorted to frozen fish / cheaper cuts to keep costs down but fresh fish was the one thing he would not compromise over!! This place is close to Grimsby - so probably far easier to get cheap fish. I am sure accessibility is a major factor in keeping costs down.

Yes you are right - they deserve recognition and utter respect for their complete lack of greed and their community spirit. How amazing would it be to see far far more community focused businesses like this one. I really really think that they deserve a full 10, irrespective of it not being the best. The price plays a significant part in our judgement of all consumables and whilst we take into consideration ethical buying and environmental impact - what about community impact. They just scored top marks in my book. Well done. 🧡 Give me people like that any day over the likes of Gordon Ramsay.

Kudos to Mr Matthews, who values the support of the community and gives back in return. The crunch on all of the food was great. Any sausage is better than the one served to you at the Waitrose cafe. Your 'rant' is about as totally spot on as it could be because this kind of value for money, aimed at feeding the community rather than lining the owners' pockets, is about as rare as hens teeth. I'd have given it 10 out of 10 across the board, not because the food was 'the best', but because at those prices it's accessible to almost everyone when so much else isn't. Oh, and spam fritter? I haven't had one of those in about as many years as you, but when meat is a price you can't afford, even a greasy one is like caviar!
