Dude, your content is fantastic for skate + photo nerds. Between 2004 and 2011, I fucked around filming my friends skate around my hometown on the east coast on a shitty (by today's standards) Sony Handycam. My dream was to film skating for a living. I just wanted to capture that 2000s skating STYLE and show it to the world. But for better or for worse, life took me in a different direction. I now find myself in the fortunate spot of being young enough to still have friends who rip the streets and want to be filmed, but I'm old enough to have a job that allows me to spend the kind of cash it would take to get a decent mirrorless + fisheye + handle + mic setup. Still hesitant on pulling the trigger, and you are answering some of the questions I've wanted to ask the skate filmers I looked up to as a kid who shot skate videos like Menikmati and In Bloom. So long story short - thank you!

Honestly, I have no idea how to make that possible. You would need an E-Mount adaptor for it, but I don't know the mount or thread size of the MK1. Are you talking about an MK1 for the VX1000 or for the HPX170?

Great to see some new specific skate/action-sport camera nerdery! The 12-24 isn't a fisheye- it's a rectilinear ultra-wide-angle. Similar angle of view but really a totally different thing than a fisheye. Fisheye distortion looks weird to normies, rectilinear looks weird to skaters, it's all about what you grew up with I guess. I just upgraded to fullframe with a Panasonic S1, with the Canon 8-15. I've only shot with it once but it's been great. The S1 crops to APS-C/s35 for 4K60, so having that 8-10mm range to allow for some slight vignetting, while still covering the whole sensor for photos, is really nice. Hard to beat but it is indeed pricey! I wish Samyang or Meike would make a cheaper all-manual clone.

Great video Joe! FYI you can use an APS-C fisheye such as the Rokinon 8mm on the Sony A7SIII with "Clear Image Zoom" to get similar results to the Canon 8-15mm at a fraction of the price. Best results are with the 8mm Fisheyes that have the removable hood.

@killatape 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks RB, hope all is well! That’s intriguing for sure. How extreme can you get with this scenario though? I like to go FULL vignette sometimes for a super artsy look. Also, I’ve used Clear Image Zoom on some prime lenses on my FX6 before, but does it not lose some resolution that way?
@RBUmali
@RBUmali 2 жыл бұрын
Thats what's great about Clear Image Zoom is that there is no loss in quality. Unfortunately you cannot shoot in 120fps with it tho. Depending on the lens you are using you can get full vignette but only if there is full vignette without any additional zoom. I also film everything fisheye with maximum vignette and love using clear image zoom for that extra punch when using a 24-105 or 24-70.
@killatape
@killatape 2 жыл бұрын
@@RBUmali This is great info, thanks RB! I used Clear Image Zoom on the FX6 before I had my 28-135 and it's definitely a game changer. I think I would consider this route if my Canon got damaged, but I'm kind of spoiled at this point, and I love that I don't have to switch off the Clear Image function in order to shoot slo-mo, which I do quite a bit of. Maybe I'll see if I can find a Rokinon and do a side by side shoot out with Pros & Cons. Much love man, hope to cross paths out in the streets again one day soon!

@@scottlandb6579 Sorry, I meant to say Rokinon 8mm. It's a great fisheye if you're on a budget. I always prefer the Canon 8-15 for it's versatility and how wide you can shoot with it, but I know it's pricey. And usually with a fisheye you'll want to set the focus manually. Auto focus can be too unpredictable because so much depth in the image is being seen all at once, the sensor doesn't know what to try to focus on.

I’ve never used a gimbal for skate filming. Not once. I’ve used it for more cinematic scenes following an actor but that’s about it. I will say the A6000 is a smaller and lighter camera, so it will be tougher to keep it steady but I believe you can do it, it just takes practice. I’d also look into some things to build the camera out and make it bigger and heavier. The EZ Handle that Jason Hernandez made for DSLRs is a good choice, if you can find one.
