A side by side comparison of a disposable bag style trap and this paper would be appropriate. I position my disposable bags away from my barn (on posts, hangers, etc.) as the attraction away from the horses. At this time of year, I usually pick up thousands of flies within 48 hours. When the bags are full, I simply replace them. I am not sure which method is more economical. During the summer, I probably go through 50 bags.

I’m not sure either. I would prefer not to us either but it is what it is at the moment. I just started using fly predators. Hopefully they will take in effect eventually and I won’t have to use any fly traps!

@@homesteadhorsemanship We haven't had any luck with those predators so hopefully you find different results. Nothing is helping this year and the money we threw at the Simplifly additive to their feed was also a waste. Sigh. BTW, we wrap 5-Gallon Home Depot buckets with that fly paper so they are super portable and lightweight. Sometimes we also put some stinky stuff inside the bucket to attract the little buggers.

Have you considered urging natural fly predators to find a home on your farm? Frogs, spiders, bats, chickens... chickens love fly larvae! How about urging barn swallows, bank swallows, swifts, and purple martins to nest around your farm? Purple Martin condos can be built out in verges of the grazing fields. Swifts like hollow trees. Bank swallows nest along the banks of creeks and rivers. Flies are so hard on the livestock!

Another idea is to take big pickle jars, put a 1/4 inch hole in the lid on top, then add some raw chicken. The chicken will begin to decompose and the flies will enter the jar and fly around until they run out of energy and drop to the bottom. I have about four of these jars around my house and they are getting full of flies.

Don't even thinks of cleaning them out, just toss them and start with a new jar or you can let them go on and on working. Have a great day! Smile!

@@David-fi1fi Yep, it stinks! I have not cleaned out any of the jars over the last four years. I tried to clean one and the smell was so horrible that I decided just let them sit. It is crazy to see the chicken being devoured by maggots, then they all die off and you have this pink slime soup per say and the fly's still enter the jars still. I will say those jars really do a good job in keeping the fly's away from the house and once they enter and start flying around in the jar, then they are doomed. Thanks for you comment.

This is what I was looking for. I read all the replies to your reply so I think you'll probably see this. Thank you so much for chiming in and hanging around. I'm going to try to figure a way to avoid the pink slime and possibly empty the jar regularly to feed the flies to the neighbors' chickens. Maybe hang in a net bag- onion bag from the top as you screw the lid on? Water in the bottom to drown them... No, wait, that wouldn't work, couldn't feed the chickens. Well I still think you're idea is great, I'm doin' it tomorrow! I hope the op of this post sees this, it could save her a fortune in fly paper. Thanks, and God Bless you and yours.

I just thought of an idea where I get large industrial type thick bags trash bags and create a kind of tiny opening for them to go inside the. With maybe a little fruit juice on the bottom of the bag. And put that bag inside of another bag that is wrapped around that a little bit larger. Though it makes it very hard if not impossible for them to find their way back out, at least once they get into the inner bag.

Plants can also really make a difference in repelling flies, but you have to prepare ahead and either start seedings indoors in late winter and transplant them as soon as their is no more risk of freezing so they are mature enough to do the job come fly season, or if you have fields that come tight up to the barn/stable area sowing seeds of these plants as edging plants along the fenceline and around the edges of the stable can make a big difference. People often do not realize that their are plants that also attract flies flies and give them a good place to bred and hide in until mature so that a great many more survive to maturity making fly populations greater. Sadly, many of what ends up planted near barns and stable are grass crops later cut for hay - that flies just love to mature in. Planting Catnip, Lavender, Sage, Basil and Lemon Balm are great for deterring and limiting fly population - catnip is especially good at repelling horse flies and house flies it serves a dual purpose as a great attractor to pollinators such as butterflies and lacewings. All of these plants produce oils that flies don't do well with, and again Catnip is really well known and the main component of catnip oil is a terpenoid called nepetalactone, which deterrent effects rival or surmount those of DEET. I use catnip oil in a spray bottle on my horses and other livestock instead of commercial fly sprays, to spray on the animal - its not going to hurt the animal, is probably a good part of what's in an 'organic fly spray you buy commercially, but is much cheaper then buying a commercial spray that may be a mixture of other, less effective oils and your major cost is the fact that they bottled it for you. The only downside is that when the catnip is in full bloom and shedding its seeds any barn cats may tend to be attracted to any patches growing near doors and windows meaning they might be underfoot a bit more. Plants can really reduce fly populations to the point of really good control plus adding your extra large fly traps should catch all those not repelled by your plants. The one downside to a fly trap is that you have to depose of it once its well covered, as dead files starting to decay on the fly paper will deter those still alive and air borne from coming close as they are smart enough to realize that if they detect a bunch of dead flies they should stay away. During the height of fly season we cover various stable/barn walls with fly paper as you did the boxes making sure its not where animals will brush up against it (ie dont forget the dogs and keep the bottom edge high enough off the grown so your dog and goats are not rubbing the fly paper). I do like the wrapped box and barrel idea as it makes it more portable, so as flies migrate from one are to the next so too can your trap.

The guy at Gold Shaw Farm tried several different types of anti-fly measures last year and posted a KZbin video on the results. Flies were tormenting his cows in the pasture. He found that putting fly paper on barrels or boxes as you did worked the best. He found that he had best success by keeping ahead of the fly proliferation, putting out the flypaper even before things got really bad and replacing it as needed. The flypaper made a huge difference on his farm. I hope it does for you too.

Yes. They lay eggs in poop, and old hay/vegetation that has been peed on or otherwise made/kept moist. @Dorothy Keene just type in equine feed fly control also for every 8 loads via wheel barrel or bags of shavings add a bag of cedar shavings. Fans point them from the rafters down words onto the area where the horses are stalled. Cedar is a natural insect replent. 8 to 1, making sure the cedar is on top of the pine shavings. As the horses get into the area, the cedar is down when the roll the cedar oil will come in touch with the hair, and the inscets don't like it so much. Also, as they move through the shavings, the natral replent raises.

Ugh! How awful! Glad that works so well. To have fewer flies, shovel up their poo & compost it with their used bedding & lawn clippings + any organic matter including coffee grounds, tea bags, egg shells, veggie peelings, stale bread, leftover pasta, paper, cardboard etc. Turn the pile with a garden fork or equipment like a skid steer or whatever to turn the pile. Then too, if you have chickens, let them eat the maggots. That won't likely eliminate the population but should reduce it.

If you have the means and space, i highly recomend getting a few "pet" chickens that are allowed to free roam (at least in areas they won't spook the horses). They will go after the maggots these flies lay on the horse manure!
