I love your creativity. I started implementing some of these ideas for mixing up meal time and my pet really enjoys it. After a month of this, she has really taken well to rotating different wet ingredients to rehydrate her breakfast and loves receiving her dinner frozen with unique toppers.

I love the Toppls - they really are my go-tos and you can get pretty creative with what you put in them so your dog doesn't get bored. Good luck on the surgery! If you're into raw, I'd also look at frozen cow necks and knuckles. They last a long time and are very engaging. Hope that helps!

Great video Laura! Lots of good ideas. I like to use the little Toppls as treat Toppls and the larger ones for meals. My guys are only 20 and 25 pounds, but I feed raw and like how easy the big ones are to clean (no dishwasher 🤣). I just fill them about half full for a meal. I have a 12 year old Westie who shows no interest in a Kong or puzzle toy and is used to eating meals from a bowl. I just got an 8 week old Westie pup and I was trying to feed her meals in a kong to create a bigger love for toys than my senior. The kongs seemed a pain to clean and my pup was leaving a lot of food in them. I ordered the Toppl and wasn't sure what to do with it. Appreciate your video!

Okay, I loved this! Thanks for sharing how to stuff a toppl both with kibble and raw. I do have a question. As your dog is eating, do you find that the raw thaws and starts to...ooze out of the hole on the side? That's one thing I'm worried about. I feed raw to my GSD guide dog and am worried about her holding it with a paw and it leaking. I don't relish the thought of cleaning up raw paw prints in her crate. She's had raw non-frozen stuffed kongs and toppls, but we've only done those outside when the weather is nice and I've just cleaned her paws after. I'd like to give her frozen puzzles inside, though and have always been concerned about the potential mess. Thanks and sorry for a novel length comment. 😁

Hey Caitlin - I have never had the raw food thaw before my dogs get to it 😂 so that hole is not a problem. It's sometimes a problem when I want to fill it with certain more liquidy fillings like raw egg, but then I just plug that whole with a glucosamine treat or similar and problem solved! I would say the Toppls are slightly less messy than the KONGs are since they can actually get to the meat more quickly with less licking. Hope that helps!

Where do you feed these toppls? If there's raw food coming out as they play around with the food and potentially bring it into their crate/bed, doesn't it get kinda gross everywhere and need lots of cleaning after meals?

Great question! So I typically feed the toppls in their crates or outside. I put dog towels (the kind that are no longer used for humans lol!) in the crates and then just pull them out and wash them if they get icky. One of my dogs gets them gross every time but the other is really clean with the Toppl so it's changed less frequently. But yes, you do need to think about where you'll feed them if you're feeding raw. Fortunately, because the KONG is frozen, the raw isn't defrosting and getting everywhere - they are just licking at it while still frozen.

@@monikavzl You certainly don't have to fill it with raw meat. Using your dog's kibble and soaking it in low-sodium chicken broth, or even water, works just fine too!

Does freezing kibble significantly deplete the potency of its important vitamins?

Hi Bitses - thank you for reaching out! Let me start out by saying I'm not a dog nutritionist and consulting with your vet will likely get you the best answer to your question. That being said, it is my understanding that because kibble is baked or dried, they have to add nutrients back in once they have cooked many of the nutrients out of the kibble. I don't think freezing would decrease the nutrients drastically. This is also the reason I feed my dogs lots of "live" food. But, you can always fill the Toppl with raw meat, or live food like eggs and veggies if you're worried about freezing the kibble. Or get the small and large size of toppl, and put the kibble in like a puzzle toy as shown in the video. No freezing needed. Hope that helps!

@@DoggyU Thank you very much. Do you think it would be ok to add powdered vitamins to the frozen kibble after to bring back some of the lost nutrients? Other than using it in a toy, I also want to freeze the kibble so it can last longer. I like getting 30 pound bags because they're less expensive, but they go bad after two weeks of opening them and it takes my dog a lot longer than that to finish it.

@@2Much4TheseBitches I've never heard of freezing kibble. I would ask your vet on that one. However, I do add supplements to my frozen puzzle toys and that works out great!

@@DoggyU Thank you. I don't think I want to freeze it any more. I figured out that putting the 30 pound bag in several small air tight containers, with some of the air pushed out, they can stay in the refrigerator instead of the freezer if they'll be used before two months.

Hi Melody - I use raw from Top Quality Dog Food or Raw Dog Food and Company. It's a HVM Blend and I mix the type of meat they are getting, often buying their sampler that has lamb, beef, chicken, turkey etc.

You can keep them in the freezer indefinitely. I usually freeze them over night to make sure they are frozen through.

Mine just doesn't care about treats, any puzzle toys or food.. when i leave he just wants me to get back lol maybe it's also about the breed.. he's a tiny breed

I do not know of any studies that suggest that food puzzle toys cause bloat, nor do I have any anecdotal experience with stuffed food toys causing bloat.

Hmm - so after you posted this, I wanted to look into it and all I could find was that it was dehydrated, but couldn't find where it said it was cooked. Either way, it works well for my dogs!
