My took my yorkie with pancreatitis to the vet month and a half ago and they literally said that they cant help her and eventually we have to consider putting her down. I was devastated. They prescribed her the digestive health dog diet that she wouldn’t eat. So what i did? I started to feed her small amounts of cottage cheese without sodium and low fat. Then I started cooking for her chicken or turkey with veggies, without fat, just a little coconut oil , but very little. I gave her slippery elm with a syringe before every meal. A month ago she wasn’t able to walk from the pain. Today she is walking around the house, getting on the couch without a pillow, she is back to normal. She gained 1.6 pounds. Im just going to keep doing what i was doing…

My yorkie is 17 still hopping and running…. 5 years ago, she had pancreatitis and liver blood panel was off the charts. It is reversed after 1 year of giving her raw freeze dried food, and sometimes cooked meats and snacks. I’m making blended chicken bone broth and collagen for her now to add into her food daily. Gives her freeze dried chew snacks like chicken necks, fish skin, beef esophagus, turkey necks. Kibbles kills your dog. Just stating personal experience. (My friends who feed their dogs kibbles, their dogs develop tumors, dermatitis, inflammatory joints, etc. don’t live past 15 years old if they’re lucky) Just like human shouldn’t eat processed foods. Same thing.

I've made my food for my 3 German Shepherds for over 5 years. It worked for them so well that they were able to stop allergy meds. I did a ratio of 60% protein (ground beef, turkey, chicken or tuna), 20% veggies (beans, peas, spinach, etc) 20% starch (rice, pasta, potatoes. To this mix in their bowls each day I added a couple tablespoons of yogurt or cottage cheese and some sweet potato or pumpkin. They also got a calcium powder sprinkled on top, plus a probiotic and multi vitamin chews.

next time you see your vet tell them since they follow a science-based approach you want to see studies showing the benefits of carbohydrates for dogs - specifically rice. because I've seen good evidence carbohydrates fuel cancer cells in dogs. also a dog has an identical digestive system to a wolf.. they don't need all kinds of veggies. they need: raw meat, bone + marrow, organs and pre-digested plant matter / tripe. wolves will occasionally forage for herbs and blueberries but it's a supplement not a staple. dogs are biologically occasional omnivores.. 97% carnivore.

Then I had started him on a rice and chicken diet for tummy troubles and wow his interest in food exploded. I've been cooking for him and my other two dogs since. I do the ground turkey but also boil chicken breasts and livers, in the broth, I'll cook some veggies... sweet potatoes, beans, spinach, broccoli, chick peas with some oatmeal or brown rice, then blend the veggies with a stick blender or my guys will pick out the veg. I'll serve two parts protein to one part of the veg/carb mix, add some egg, blueberry, peas, pumpkin and cottage cheese and a supplement powder.

She made a basic recipe which is still a step up from just kibble. However, that was WAY too much rice compared to the meat ratio. Half cup to a whole cup max would have been alright. She could have crushed or ground up the eggshell and add it in for calcium. Maybe throw in some sardines for extra minerals & iron. Can even throw in some herbs like parsley or basil. So many variations can be made to make it more balanced in accordance to YOUR dog(s) needs.

We started with a similar recipe, but when I made a spreadsheet with the AAFCO standards and plugged in the recipe, it was deficient in a lot of things. And cooking and freezing was a pain, sooo... We tweaked the recipe until it met standards, then started freeze drying all the raw, prepared, ingredients individually. For a while we mixed them all, scooped and reconstituted at meal time. Ended up with too much nutrition powdered in the bottom! Now we make "basic mix" of meat, veg and rice (not nearly as much!) And "toppers" that have chia and flax and cranberry and, and, and, each with a different kick...liver or fish or pumpkin/yogurt. The toppers only need 1tsp /15# or so of dog. We also free feed rotating quality kibbles. Dogs are fit and feisty and only get chubby, like all of us do, in winter when conditions prevent regular walks. The dogs could walk, but us hoomans aren't crazy about deep snow over ice below 0°.

Can you share your exact recipe- simple list. Please STOP all kibble. It is toxic. Any meat in dog food is REJECTED for human consumption aka FEED GRADE. Then it is heated to 400F- all nutrients killed, then preservatives are added and it must be fortified with synthetic vitamins. It will kill your pet. Just don't do it- ever. Read THE FOREVER DOG. Dogs are carnivores just like us they have grinding teeth.. I have a 4 month old Corgi/ Pomeranian mix. A food recipe for a hundred pound Lab doesn't help me at all. I also raise chickens and there are foods you can't feed chickens as well. I would just like some truth. Ive invested a lot in her already. I don't want to cook food for her that will kill her.

I had to come up with softer food for my picky, male husky after he had a couple of cysts removed from his butt. This was done so his eliminations didn’t mess with his stitches. I basically made a stew which I mixed with his high quality dry food that I ground up in the food processor and then ground everything together. After he healed from surgery I kept doing this with improvements because his appetite is awesome now with no pickiness. I have a large upright freezer so I can freeze large amounts in quart size deli containers. I also have a 100 qt. pot that I use for crawfish cook outs so I make a very large amount. 20 lb. of beef, chicken or turkey ground 5 qt. of homemade concentrated stock with 5 qt. of water. 10 lb. sweet potatoes, (yield 6-7 lb, peeled) Costco or Sam’s club veg. 1 bag baby carrots 1 bag celery 1 bag green beans 1 head cauliflower Chop veg and cook at med until almost tender45-60 minutes, add meat and finish cooking another 45 -60 minutes. Add 8 lb. dry kibble and let hydrate 10 minutes off the fire. Mix with 30 “ thinset paddle attachment for drill until broken down and well combined. Put in containers label and freeze. I get 30 qts with this recipe.

I also make my dog homemade food using a 1/3 ratio. One third ground beef/chicken or turkey, one third vegetables and one third brown rice. To that omega 3 supplement, eggs and egg shells baked in oven and ground up. To this sunflower oil 1 tablespoon per pound of food. I will consider a good overall vitamin supplement to add to this. I have also started my dog on a probiotic. I don't think this video shows enough meat protein and is mostly vegetables. There are vitamins in those however.

I’ve tried raw, I’ve tried searing, my dog absolutely will not do it. He wants the food cooked 😂. My dog is all about texture. He can’t even handle a wet tennis ball because the fuzz grosses him out. But for the diet, I had to consult a pet nutritionist. I had to get a probiotic and enzyme combo that is nasc approved, then a multi vitamin, a calcium and iron supplement, and an omega 3 oil by Nordic naturals. I was surprised by just the supplements alone.
@LordFirestaff

Just FYI, tennis balls are terrible for your dog's teeth. The fibers are quite abrasive and act as a file. Over just a couple of years of use, your dog's K9's will begin to flatten significantly, along with their other teeth. I know you're saying your dog doesn't like tennis balls, but you should know this for the future if you ever do have a dog that likes playing with a ball. Find something the same size and weight as a tennis ball without the texture (smooth and rubbery).

@@LordFirestaff Oh I totally agree. I was trying to say how finicky my dog is about texture lol. We use a chuck it brand ball as they have ranges for different rubber toughness so usually the soft or medium or since he is a under 30lbs dog he does well with the kong puppy.

I'll not claim that I know more than you about canine nutrition. I have no formal training in the subject. However, more than 15 years ago I started looking for science-based studies on the subject. I spent more than six months reading studies and articles about canine nutrition. It was an informative exercise and I realized that even the specialists disagreed on the general approach to canine nutrition. I won't share my conclusions with you, as I'm not absolutely convinced that I've chosen the right approach. And I'm not interested in debating the subject. I will only say my choices are at least much better informed than they were before I started reading about it.

Okay, as a retired veterinary rep for Hills(34 years) I loved this video! Pet parents have been so conned by pet food marketers to simply look at ingredients. They are so duped by manipulation of the ingredient panel and dubious definitions of ingredients. Your video helps explain high quality ingredients still need to be balanced to deliver the optimal nutrient levels. And it’s not easy! Most nutrients are affected by other nutrients so correct balance is crucial! Love your videos and your great attitude! And your credentials! So it’s okay on KZbin to critique using their actual video? I would love to try that in my channel! You’re sure there’s no rule or law against it? I see others doing it too . Thanks for this video. I have a Husky and I know they need zinc in their diet. So I bought a high grain free kibble, with meat or fish plus vegetables, herbs and berries, so I give that to my dog and mix it with fresh salmon, ground turkey or chicken, he also gets an egg twice a week poached, and each night for his bedtime treat he gets a raw chicken wing. I really hope that I'm giving his as good of a diet as I can. Sometimes not always I make a doggy stew or loaf that an a Holistic VMD gave me the recipe for plus a home made treat now and then that she also gave me the recipe's for, sometimes meat, and other times tuna or another fish. He also gets a plain yoghurt, just a little bit as he tends to get upset stomachs easy.

I believe the ones that I was looking at for my Chihuahuas or a six week supply at $30 because my dogs are small and you’re supposed to sprinkle a certain amount into the food after you cook it to make sure they have all of their nutrient needs met and all of their vitamins met to as well. @LovingMyLife56 Here's her recipe (multiplied x 8 for freezing in portions) If you only want to make small batches, her video is easy to find. It can be fed raw or cooked. 7 lbs lean ground beef 90% +(93 is best) 3/4 cup ground hempseeds or 1/3 cup hempseed oil 16 oz canned sardines in water or 4 tsp cod liver oil 4 tsp ground ginger 4 tsp kelp powder 8 eggs pasture raised 4 egg shells 8 oz beef liver 8 oz broccoli 8 oz spinach 8 oz red bell pepper SMALL BATCH 14 oz 90%+ Ground Beef (use 93%) 2 tsp hemp seed oil or 3 TBS ground hemp seeds 1/2 tsp Cod Liver Oil or 2 oz sardines in water 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/4 - 1/2 tsp kelp powder 1 egg 1/2 of the egg shell 1 oz beef liver 1 oz broccoli 1 oz red bell pepper 1 oz spinach Begin by mixing together the ground beef, eggs, kelp powder, ground ginger, hempseed, (or hempseed oil), and sardines. Drain the water from the sardines before you add them in.Save half of the eggshells and set them aside. Try to break up the sardines as much as you can before mixing so that it is evenly distributed throughout the recipe. When it is well combined, set it aside. Next, process the veggies, eggshells, and beef liver. You may need to do this separately if your food processor can't find everything. I process everything separately, except for the bell pepper and eggshells- I process those together. Add the blended ingredients to the beef and mix until well combined. Portion out the food according to your dog's daily food intake requirements. The dog food will be good in the freezer for weeks, but only for a few days in the fridge. Portion accordingly. I do not like to keep cooked dog food in the fridge for more than 4 days. The food is ready to serve raw, or you can gently cook it. Cook without any oil on a nonstick pan on low heat. Be careful not to sear the meat- you want to gently cook it until it is just done. *Note- If using hempseed oil, cooking the food on high heat for a long period of time will make the hempseed oil taste really bad to the dogs, so be really careful about \"gently\" cooking it!You can make patties, large chunks, or break it down into mince if you prefer. Drain any oils/fats from cooking the beef and let it cool completely before storing in the fridge

@@LovingMyLife56 That condition is likely from too much fat. I would feed less. Usually about 1%-2% of body weight. I ONLY feed once a day per The Forever Dog book. Dr. Becker is great. I would FAST one day a week (no food, only water if a pup.) I lightly cook his food. He eats every time now. I do lean TURKEY a teaspoon of Pumkin Puree. 1/4 of the powder pill of Magnesium Glycinate, pinch of Salt and a small amount of Org. Veg. Read that book. Do get him to a Vet though. That can be very serious and painful. I had something like it and it was a living h*ll. Had to remove my organ. Horrible. Get the book. This is what I do. It is not advice for you or your dog. See a professional. My dog is a 14lb. Mini Poodle. It seems hard at first but once you get the routine down it is very easy and fairly cheap. Make a bunch and freeze what you won't use for the next several days. Thaw it out the next food cycle ~2 days before you run out. Use glass containers, not plastic if possible.

I think that was everything this time. I also use blueberries, ground chicken and odds and ends of beef and pork at times. Oh and one ingredient I almost left out was one can of pineapple crushed or chunks, I swear this works for our 100 lb German Shepherd, he used to eat his poop and no longer does. I was looking for help as to why he does it and if there was something I could do about it other than stand there waiting for him to do his job, I am disabled so that wasn't going to happen LOL so I gave it a try and he has not ate any since I added it to his diet. Good question. It was based on one study that fed garlic extract so the harmful compound allicin was very much condensed. Results showed signs of stress on the red blood cells so vets took the better safe than sorry approach but more recent trials and honestly - just a few calculations have saved garlic's reputation. Follow the feeding recommendations for garlic based on size of your pet and it should be fine (assuming no intolerances or allergies etc)

Okay there’s a lot that I want to say but I’m gonna simplify, this recipe I have followed before, I don’t use it all the time. But when I have I’ve used it as a topper and mixed it with kibble. My dogs actually really loved it. This was one of my first recipes diving into homemade dog food, and I do recommend it. Now, on the contrary, it is important to switch up topper ingredients. That way each topper that is made has different nutritional value. I try to rotate my recipes out, that way they are not just eating the same topper and I can switch out the different benefits they get each topper.
@siennateel2381
@siennateel2381 9 ай бұрын
It depends how much topper you add tbh because if it's say 50% kibble and 50% topper, your dog is still gonna have consequences. Even less than 50% topper is probably bad. That's still part of their diet that isn't balanced. The kibble will only provide enough of something if your dog is eating 100% just the kibble. For example if you feed 20% topper with no calcium and 80% kibble, your dog still only gets 80% of the calcium they need

It's very hard to home cook for dogs. You need to follow certain principals. Balance over time! The wire frame recipe is this... 80 meat of which 10% is made up of 5% secreting (e.g. Liver) and 5% non secreting (e.g. Heart) and 20 veg + fruit. You need to add calcium (if not feeding raw meaty bones 2X per week) and natural vitamins, which are plant based. or a good quality balancing powder, again plant based. This meal should be your dogs "main" meal but you should feed other meals such as sardines and cooked veg, eggs and raw meat. You need to feed your dog a "wide" variety of foods, some cooked and some raw. This is how you will achieve "balance over time" Don't take feeding your dogs yourself lightly - you can do real harm to your dog if you don't follow certain rules.

Thanks for making this video, hopefully individuals watching will be fore-warned to the many recipes circulating these days and the potential problems with home-cooked meals. Its sad to say however, that this recipe is more nutritional that many that I've seen on the internet. I'm a firm believer of home prepared meals, but it would be nice to see recipes that are complete and balanced so that they can be fed at least once or twice a week. As you mentioned, this recipe is devoid in Calcium and Phosphorus, deficient in most of the trace minerals (Iron, copper, zinc and iodine) and most certainly deficient in Vitamin D and B12. She was off to a great start, until she stopped and added the rice. The carbohydrate percentage on a dry matter basis had to be greater that 35% (no better than a kibble).

It's better than kibble just by virtue of being homemade.

@@minaso81307 Not necessarily, its all in the details. I actually formulate cooked and raw meals for pet parents that are complete and balanced to NRC standards (recommended allowances). The meal reviewed is not complete and balanced. It is deficient in a number of key vitamins and minerals (as noted above and by many others on this post). Feeding this recipe over time will result in health issues down the road. I would never advocate feeding an ultra processed dry kibble, because your right, it is not healthy. However, by virtue of AAFCO regulation at least it contains all the nutrients that a dog requires. So you see, "better" requires a qualifying definition, and that's all in the nutrient details.

My chihuahua has had two different bouts of Pancreatitis very mild at first and the second beyond bad all because of my giving her a crappy diet and overfeeding her,and all I did was get canned low-fat dog food you can actually find great all natural brands that are better formulated for your dog then experimenting with foods that might actually do more harm than good and I was never told I had to put my dog down I was told stick to a low-fat diet and stay with the diet no matter what.My vet never said once the food had to be a script brand.She is still here three yrs later.

I really feel like you reacted to this in an overdramatic and frankly mean way. This woman is putting a lot of effort into making good food for her dog. She is better than 99% of people that just feed their dog bargain Mart kibble. Sure it's not perfect and her research has flaws. She's not s fucking animal nutritionist, she's googling stuff like we all would. How about some constructive criticism instead of just dunking on her with your credentials. If you were my vet and you treated me like this I would find another vet.

hey Doc, I love your videos already. Thank you so much for posting as a person who has been feeding four dogs fresh food for almost a year. I’ve learned a lot! Our recipe for our pack is very high in protein with a mixture of all of the top 10 foods that you had posted in one of your other videos. The one thing that I do add to be on the safe side is a supplement called Rileys, it kind of feels in all the gaps of anything that might be missing. We also use turmeric but I did not know that I needed to add pepper. So that is a added benefit to watching a video today so thanks also not criticizing you, but you might want to look up the word litigious, I unfortunately know what that word means. Anyways, thanks so much for your videos. And looking forward to many more and I appreciate you by the way what do you think about Dr. Becker’s view on her recipe for fresh food? She has a book out check it out.

Anything to do with diet, I think American doctors/ vets should include Nutrition for at least 2 years in their curriculum. The most obese population of humans and pets on the planet. Let’s be humble and admit Nutrition is not Americans forte. I ll stick with my homemade dog diet.

I have been cooking as a topper and at times the only food for my dogs for about 9 yrs now. I have a rescue Chi/Whippet mix who just turned 17. Last yr at his dental, the stand in vet took his vitals and went to input the info and stopped, looked at me & said "That dog is 16yrs old?" When I said yes, she said, "Whatever you are doing, keep doing it! I thought he was closer to 8 or 9 yrs". And sometimes I add rice to my dog food recipes. But I mix up the meat, the vegies and the spices I add. I have 1 sm dog who has no teeth and get seizures every time she eats any commercial kibble, so she only gets what I cook. She tok is amazing at 10yrs old.

Sugar feeds yeast and all carbs break down to sugar. You want to reduce the carbs. Even carrots are sugary. I also found a fermented colostrum powder at my local pet store that finally cleared up my dogs yeast problems. And I was recommended to try caprylic acid for yeast.

What Vet approved that? Probably any allopathic vet working. I can't tell you the extremely bad advice I've gotten from ALL allopathic vets regarding home cooking,, first being told to never do it, also being told to never ever give a raw diet, which is only a trend, to being prescribed the worst junk commercial prescription pet food on the market to cure certain conditions. Thank God I found a holistic vet and I do as much research as possible, by the way, I would have turned away from this video the second I saw how much rice she was adding. I tend to stick with sweet potato and pumpkin for carbs but I also use organic for all the foods except the meat which is at least hormone free or grass fed but not always organic.

I do however add Supplements to my dogs home made food so she gets all her vitamins. People MUST do their research to make sure they're not being misslead.

Just boil chicken gizzards and hearts for 15 minutes which have more healthy nutrients for your dog. My dog turned 14 this month. He survived mostly off canned food and table scraps.
@mollydaniels5571
@mollydaniels5571 10 ай бұрын
Please stop telling people to feed their dogs chicken gizzards & canned food. Just because your dog "survived" to 14 on that doesn't make it healthy by any means. People want their dogs to thrive, not survive. Canned food is full of rendered ingredients with meat that is the WORST quality. The animals they use for that could have died out in the field of anything, cancer, disease, whatever but still be ok to be rendered and used in kibble and canned. I know you mean well but it isn't good advice.
