Been using Cakewalk for midi since back before computers were fast enough for audio without latency. Then computers got really fast and I moved up to a great computer and used it for everything. I have loved it. I have a Yamaha DM2000 board with 48 channels in and out via 2 Hammerfall 24 ch interfaces. Fantastic. If it ain't broke, I'm not about to try to fix it lol! But for those just starting out, you don't really need a big board unless you are going to be recording a band. If you multi track all the tracks, you can get buy with a stereo interface and use the built in mixer in Cakewalk. It works great, even with a mouse. But I admit, I love my dedicated board. I Just like putting my hands on sliders and knobs.

Ardour is really sweet when using it on a Linux machine. I installed the Linux Audio Workstation packages and Ardour and a host of other really cool music production programs came with it, including Audacity, LMMS, and a really amazing drum sequencer that I can't remember the name of right now. When I switched to Windows I tried it out but it seemed off. Also it wouldn't let me use USB mics, which in the Linux version it had. All around it is a well equipped DAW for professional producers. I've used Ableton since Live 9 and really like the workload so that's my go-to. Oh Nautilus is the drum sequencer. There is a windows version that is free too

I've found some tricks to overcome limitations (well, some of them) like using a drum rack to increase tracks/project list, grouping instruments around 1 track with proper automations, free VST effects and similar. Kinda painfull process to create, especially when you try to do some collab work. More time I'm spending on HOW to do something then actaully do something. Hey, I wanna just try to make some simple music as an enthusiast, like a hobby, maybe later even pick an entry level MIDI keyboard, but for now I just want to use my computer keyboard - no instruments - to make some sounds. What DAW do you recommend? The ones that caught my attention were Cakewalk, LMMS and Reaper. Also, do you have any videos about this - getting started as enthusiast with no instruments, just the computer keyboard and using virtual instruments?
@AudioTechTV8 ай бұрын
For free, I recommend Cakewalk and/or Waveform not necessarily in that order. It’s worth trying both. If I was to choose any program free or paid then I would go with FL Studio for what you want to do. It actually sounds like exactly what you want. I started out with it and used my computer keyboard for a couple years but both Waveform and Cakewalk will allow you to use your computer keyboard too. You can download the free FL Studio Demo and try it out. It’s completely unlocked except you can’t load your saved projects. So you can save your projects and render them to audio but you can’t load them up again until you buy a license. I used to create sounds in the demo, render them to audio and then load that audio into other programs. LMMS is similar to FL but the workflow isn’t as intuitive as FL Studio and it doesn’t come with all the instruments however you can download a ton of free instrument plugins to use with these programs too so give LMMS a try and see if it works for you.
@wedge_one8 ай бұрын
@@AudioTechTV What I didn't like about Waveform is the fact that I need to create an account in order to download and use, that's why I gave priority to Cakewalk. But since it's the first on your list, I might give it a try! Gonna watch a few videos and see which of these two are the best for me. And I want to start with a free DAW instead of picking FL Studio, at least for now, and depending of how my learning goes, my first expense would be with a 25 key midi keyboard. And what about Reaper? Too advanced for beginner and for what I want to use it? Ty so much for answering!

Plugins can be virtual instruments and/or virtual effects. Most of these programs come with a few FX and instruments. You can expand these programs by adding “plugins” this way you aren’t stuck with the using only the instruments and FX that come with the programs. There are tons of plugins available. Some of them emulate classic hardware and some are their own thing. You can look up VST plugins to find more info.

A couple video ideas- video per DAW breakdown, who its for and who its not; and DAWs to avoid (infrequent updates, hostile to customers, possibly not perpetual license, bothed platform support)

i appreciate the video ideas but I do actually have more than this video on this channel. I have videos on individual daw overviews plus actual beginner walkthroughs for several programs. In this video I go into who each DAW might be good for. I also have a video about DAWs to avoid. As for the non musical stuff like customer service, infrequent updates, etc. I really like to focus on music making and never base my musical decisions on things like customer service, updates, and licensing. I’ve purchased almost every DAW at some point and have never needed customer service so I don’t have any info or personal dealings with that and I wouldn’t go off stuff other people say. When I talk about paid programs (I have other videos that talk about those) I do talk about their licensing. Thank you for watching. Keep creating! 👊👍

2 questions if I may, Zane...... 1) you said Pro Tools Intro can handle eight audio tracks, eight instrument tracks, and eight MIDI tracks...... Does that mean 24 tracks total OR 8 tracks TOTAL? 2) I'm currently using a different DAW..... can I import those individual tracks into Pro Tools Intro?
@AudioTechTV8 ай бұрын
It can technically go up to 24 tracks at the same time if you use all 8 audio, instrument and midi tracks. You also get 4 aux input tracks which can behave like an effect send or bus. You can import your audio and midi from other DAWs but not the effects chains or settings. So if you have settings in FX plugins that you want to use in Pro Tools then save the preset or write down the settings so you can load it in pro tools. One thing to note about plugins in pro tools is that it uses the AAX format so you may not have installed that version when installing plugins before or maybe you did. Most paid plugins include the AAX version and a lot of free plugins also have AAX versions but there are still some that don’t.

I have ordered an interface and a condenser mic, and I already have a pair of "desktop studio speakers" that I've never used and some old but great Sennheiser headphones. I have no intentions of trying to be a professional musician. All I want is to be able to record vocals and keyboard separately (because I can't play and sing at the same time worth a damn) and do some overdubs on both vocals and keyboard. I don’t need perfect sound quality -- I don't know sh*t about latency, gain, etc., and I don’t play guitar. The software doesn't necessarily have to be free (though that would be great!) -- the main thing to me is simple. Thanks!

For free I would recommend trying Luna. It recently became free on Windows so wasn’t on this list. Waveform Free is also another great option but I think Luna might be a bit easier. For a paid program again you could go with the pro version of either of those programs if you wanted or Mixcraft 10 is another great option that is pretty straight forward and easy to use. All of the programs pretty much do the same things the difference is their workflow/user interface and included plugins. They are all going to require some time to learn. The funny thing is that a lot of us start out with the same attitude. “I don’t want to be pro or anything, I just want to record some stuff for fun”. And then once you start catching on, you begin to wonder “if I can sound that good with this stuff, what if I had something better…”. And it continues lol. Have fun and good luck!

You can also install it on multiple computers as long as you only use one at a time, and they even let you use the entire program's functionality during your trial. On top of all that, I just really like the system itself. It's light, powerful and has a nice contextual tool system where you're not switching manually all the time; you can get different functions by clicking on different sections of a waveform or MIDI roll. Drag from top changes the volume or velocity of only that section. I suppose you're talking about Logic Pro X which was Mac-only for the past 20+ years (I used the original Windows-based product developed by Emagix in the late '90s: when Apple acquired Emagix in 2002 they quickly turned the software into a maxclusive application). Starting in 2023, a product by the same moniker but slimmed-down functionality is available for the iPad, too.

I am dissapointed a bit by Cakewalk because they made all options of their Daw as a subscription model. I don't know how long it will be possible to use the free version until somethinhg happens that it will make it not possible.

@@wisonboupamai3932 hmmmm. Title says free, thumbnail says free, the content in the video says free… I’d say it probably won’t cost anything for a free DAW.

Pro Tools sucks don't get it I'm here because I'm trying to get a new software because it is so glitchy and hard to use if you want to switch off your audio interface and just edit music through some headphones it glitches and won't initialize.
@AudioTechTV8 ай бұрын
You’re using it incorrectly and claim that it sucks because of that. Lol. If you disconnect your audio interface and your software is setup to use your audio interface then it doesn’t magically know that you’re switching to something else. If your audio interface doesn’t have a headphone output on it, you may want to get a different one. You could try using Asio4all as your driver and then set it so both your audio interface and your built in soundcard (or whatever you have your headphones connected to) are active as outputs this way you can freely switch between the two without having to turn off your interface. The behaviour that you’re explaining will happen with other programs too.

What happens to me with "free" DAWs or even "free" plugins that comes with pieces of hardware, or even some of those you mentioned in the beggining, is that I'm feed up with the most spreaded venereal disease in the audio production scene: DRMs. Absurdly complex, intrusive, redundant and stupid methods of getting away with the thing. Usually, you have to sign in to whatever corp owns the software, then, give a lot of info about you, sometimes, gratitous amounts of it, then, usually, you have to fight with some kind of bubonic external DRM software in order to get things working, and I am feed up of this f***** s***. The thing is that most of times you don't get better in this respect by paying. I really would like that LMMS would get ASIO audio, but then, they couldn't continue being FOSS, and that would mean going to the infectious pavillion with the rest of the scene, so... what should I do. The thing I want to do seems to be unrealistic! And its not a grand thing: having an offline, FOSS DAW with ASIO, MIDI and VST support that doesn't try to give me a tapeworm infection whenever I try to download and put it to run. I guess the only real FOSS-like solution is to combine Audacity with LMMS. Maybe I would go and pay for Audacious. That and REAPER is thebetter I see for now aside from Audacity+LMMS. Man, if only ASIO couldn't be propietary.

studio one prime is not free
@AudioTechTV7 ай бұрын
It looks like they might have discontinued Studio One Prime recently. I know they’ve done that in the past and then brought it back so maybe they’ll do that again or maybe it’s gone forever. Lots of change with free DAWs this year. A good addition that isn’t in this video is Luna has recently been released for free on Windows.
