I'm learning both T7 and Cakewalk right now. T7 is very nice and easy so far. Cakewalk can be very very confusing at first when you are recording audio, comping, using time stretch, and setting up a tempo map so that the audio goes along with any tempo changes. I typically will speed up a song at the end, by 5-10 BPM. Audio Snap, and the audio snap palette in particular took a lot of time to understand and master. Hopefully I'm past that now and everything else will be easy.

Thanks for that information-very well done. Can you recommend an introduction to the language used to describe all the technical words associated with MIDI and home recording software? I am 77 years old, have played piano for 65+ years.I have never recorded any of my music and would like to leave something for my family, but I have no idea where to start with this. I have a Yamaha S-90, which I think has recording capabilities, but again, I'm lost with the technology. I think the Cakewalk software would be more than adequate for what I need. I would sincerely appreciate any guidance you could provide. Ches Smith

Honestly anything will work for your basic needs. Recording softwares won't directly change the sound quality of your recording. What's MUCH MORE important is the type of microphone you're using, your microphone placement in relation to your instrument/vocals, your preamps, and most importantly the room/surrounding. Even when it comes down to software features, it's more important to familiarize and understand how to use them. For example, you need to know when and how much compression to use. Likewise with any other effects. The most expensive recording software isn't going to automatically dial any of that in for you. Same goes with understanding how to mix and EQ your tracks which is crucial, and that's all mainly dependent on your EARS, not the recording software. All these things are WAY more important than what type of recording software you use. In your case it really wouldn't make a difference if you used ProTools versus a free software. If you're just plugging in the mic and recording, that same mic won't sound any different regardless of what software you're using. Like I stated earlier, I would concentrate on your distance and positioning of your mic and whatever you can do to soundproof the acoustics in your room. Or maybe you want to try different areas of your house, assuming you don't have a studio. And since you'll only have 2 tracks (maybe a couple more if you want to harmonize with yourself) you'll wanna spend time adjusting the backing tracks in relation to your main vocals and harmonies. Maybe you'll want to add some reverb to your voice or EQ your voice a little if it didn't pick up well, but that should pretty much be it. Any free recording software will cover all that. I hear a lot of people that are just starting out trying to get the best recording software out there, but if you don't have a handle on things....like if you can't mix your tracks properly or don't know how to adjust your reverb tastefully, then it's completely pointless spending money on a high-end software. I spent a few years with free Garageband because if I wasn't 100% familiar with all the features on it I didn't deserve to upgrade. People underestimate the value of skill when it comes to recording. Training your ears to know how to adjust things, knowing the ambience of the room, and microphone placement will always make the greatest difference with how your recording turns out.

I kept using my Cubase SX all the way until my license key just stopped working. I didn't really want to buy a new program as I just do not have the time in my life anymore to dedicate to music production and to justify the cost. I have tried all programs that you mention plus others. By far Cakewalk is the most intuitive that I could simply pick up and play coming from Cubase. Very very happy with it. Interesting you point out that the midi editing capabilities were the best. That's the one bug bear I have with it. I just find it fiddly and the auto smart tool selector is sometimes unusable.
