I had blossom end rot when I first started growing tomatoes about 4 years ago. Never could prevent it or cure it. This year however i mixed high quality worm castings in soil and so far so good. The fungi attaches to roots and acts like a straw. The microbes in them eat the organic matter and coverts the nutrients into a soluble form and the fungi slurps it up to the roots. So far its working like a charm. Now if I could just control the leaf footed bugs i will be ok lol.

The heat is early and strong in GA this year (McDonough zone 8A). We are upping the drip watering schedule earlier than normal to counter the heat. So far the best varieties of tomatoes we have setting so far in the heat are Bella Rosa, Red Snapper, and of course "The Hossinator"! I'm impressed with all 3 of those over the other varieties we are growing. Unfortunately the wife harvested my 'maters in a bunch this week and I'm not sure which ones are which so I can't comment on Hossinator taste comparison yet. All of the mix of 'maters she brought in were great flavored though. As always in the South we are interested in heat tolerant varieties and your bean test will be interesting for sure. I like to use Monterey Garden Insect Spray (Spinosad) and Monterey "Complete Disease Control" for insect and disease problems. You can mix them for an "all in one" application if both are needed. For those who have not used them, both are OMRI organic certified and made from natural bacteria. You are right about blossom end rot. I usually don't have it, but this year it showed up early. I use a calcium foliar spray made with 1/2 ounce of Calcium Chloride (food grade - on Amazon) mixed with 3 gallons, with a sticker/spreader added and applied weekly to all my nightshades (peppers, etc...). Should give about 324ppm of calcium in that mix. Oh, and the sunflowers are beautiful. Even the old goat loved them!

I don't peel. My favorite mayo is Hellman's, I've never seen Duke's mayo here where I live. You may have mentioned soil pH in this video regarding plant uptake of calcium but I don't recall you mentioning the importance of pH levels in this particular video. As I'm sure you know, the pH of the soil is key to unlocking the minerals in the soil for plants because if pH is not correct for the plant there can be a boat load of calcium or any other mineral in the soil but the plant won't be able to absorb it.

Calcium is important in soil structure. Calcium in soils comes in many forms. Calcium is present in most soils as insoluble calcium carbonate (CaCO3-). When high levels of phosphoric acid are utilized in agricultural cropping systems, most of the phosphorous is tied up with ionic calcium to form insoluble calcium phosphate (CaPO4). Only ionic calcium (Ca++) is able to affect soil function and structure. To maintain soil structure, soils must maintain adequate levels of ionic calcium.

You should try Galahad (AAS) determinant. It is a beast. Productive and big and tasty. It is a new AAS in 2020. We are using bone meal this year to side dress the paste tomatoes to see if it will prevent blossom end rot. Also using mycorrhiza fungus in the planting hole. OG likes the sunflowers. My 80 year old aunt peels tomatoes when she has company, but we eat skins and all. We now have Dukes in our area, so when our tomatoes start ripening, I think I’ll try it.

I have three 4x8 raised beds that I've used for growing peppers and tomatoes and don't have anywhere else to plant. I added mushroom compost, fireplace ash, and rabbit droppings to these beds. Will growing cover crops in these beds enable these beds to be used for nightshades the following year? Lastly, the fruit on the top on the plants is taking a long time to grow and ripen. Is there anything that can be done to speed up the growth? I've sued fish emulsion, Miracle Grow Bloom Booster, Espoma Tomato Tone, and Agro Plus fertilizers. I live in the AZ desert and we're experiencing a heatwave, so I imagine this is negatively affecting the tomatoes. I've got Bella Rosa, Red Snapper, Grand Marshall, and Thunderbird seedlings for transplanting in July for a fall crop. By the way, those are some impressive tomatoes! Too bad they don't grow like that out here.
@gardeningwithhoss2 жыл бұрын

Great show, again! I was hoping you would have a tip about getting hard white cores in tomatoes. I've had this problem a couple of years in a row and can't seem to find any explanation on why and how to prevent it. Last year I grew Red Snapper, Bella Rosa and Purple boy and all had big green cores that left almost no tomato to eat. Any idea what causes that and how I can keep my Roadsters and Hossinators this year from the same fate??? Doug Smith -- Cleveland, TN

I'm a Duke's guy too, but I can do Hellman's because my wife likes it. No peel, mainly because I'm too lazy and it doesn't bother me, and Miracle Whip is best suited as an Industrial Lubricant or some such. It ain't for eating! I'm having issues in my heirlooms. It's one reason I plant so many! No real problems in the hybrids. I've been good on my spray program and I'm sure that's helping. Should have some good data soon on the test varieties but I'll tell you those Ramblers are loading up!
