One thing to keep in mind with Thunderbird is that it was bred to set initial fruit at high heat. It was designed to do well for a fall tomato harvest when it might still be quiet a bit hotter when the plant starts flowering, not spring harvest. I don’t know if you are going to do fall tomatoes, but it might be worth trying then to see if it performs better.

We grew Paul Robeson last year, here in Delaware. Sorry to say it did terrible in our conditions. We had something like 15 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, and only 2 or 3 of them didn't do well. Paul Robeson was one that just couldn't perform. Overall, I prefer Cherokee Purple and Carbon.. they do really well for us every year, and the flavor is a lot better than Paul Robeson. A little context - We have hot humid summers here, with big rain events, since we are right on the coast. July tends to be 90s-100s and dry, but the rest of the summer is pretty wet and 80s-90s. Just passing along our experience, for fellow tomato lovers in similar climates 🍅 P.S. We love Kellogg's Breakfast.. so good. The plants are some of the saddest looking things starting out haha, but, man, they really come through. Huge tomatoes, excellent flavor, and really nice texture.

We're just now in the blossom stage, but early plant vigor in 5b at 6500' elevation, the rankings would run Thunderbird, Rambler, Grand Marshall, and Red Snapper in last place. Just opposite of what you've seen, but it's early yet for us. Snappers are catching up. It's noteworthy that Thunderbird and Rambler were just released last year by Sakata into their commercial tomato line and were not intended for the home garden sector. They may perform differently in commercial production with a synthetic fertilizer and IPM program. All my indeterminates are Italian paste heirlooms and so far, so good. Great program as usual.
@LazyDogFarm2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting indeed. I have seen some theories that some of these commercial varieties do perform better when fed synthetically, so that would make sense.

@dvrmte2 жыл бұрын
My guess as to which plant had the fish buried beside, is whichever is the smallest plant. LOL That's my experience using fish as fertilizer that haven't been composted beforehand. I used to fish a lot and it seemed easier to just bury fish or fish guts rather than putting them in the compost pile. I tried burying them under hills of corn and squash too. The plants were either severely stunted or killed within a few weeks, depending on how close the fish were buried to the plants. Also, critters like to dig up the fish, even the half rotten ones. However, I have had amazing results planting where I buried them the previous year. My neighbors and I caught over 300 crappie one weekend, We filleted them and buried the remains in a trench I dug in my garden. I planted tomatoes the next Spring and they done amazing. Too amazing actually. The vines were rampant but they eventually slowed down at about 8 feet of growth. By the way, there's no documentation other than one dubious source that the Indians regularly used fish as fertilizer. There is archaeological evidence they used fish heads in Peru. The quote from the Pilgrims and Squanto was before the Pilgrims had actually witnessed Indians planting corn. When they did see them plant it they noted that they used no fertilizer. The Indians typically used slash and burn agriculture techniques. The ash from the fires was their only fertilizer. They manipulated their environment just as we do. They weren't living in accordance to Nature. The area where I live was a fire maintained, ridgetop prairie, when the first settlers arrived here in upstate South Carolina in the 1750s. Sorry about the rant. LOL
@LazyDogFarm2 жыл бұрын
I agree that the effects of a buried fish are usually only seen in the second year. I rarely just straight fish emulsion. The Agrothrive we use has fish emulsion and corn steep liquor which seems to give the plants a quicker pop along with the slow release.

Hey Travis. I want to admit an Eraser mistake, and then tell you about the issues we are having over in EC AL. My buddy Jay, who is a faithful follower of you as well, were having a discussion about a certain 2, 4-d. We discussed fuming and timing. I decided to stay WAY away from my 45x45 garden with it killing my clover in the yard. Which worked well. BUT, I decided to spray the fence line around my garden with Eraser. It's a new plot with tons of grass/weed. It did it's job. I used a no-mist attachment and did it on a day there was no wind. Low pressure, no mist, 3 inches from the ground. A week later, fence line is dead exactly where I wanted. Happy. 6-8 inches wide along the bottom. 2 weeks later I have several different plants yellowing within 10-12 ft of the fence. Dying even. I have messed up my garden in a bad way just trying to keep all the grass and weed seeds out. The other issue we're having here which is new to me is fruiting WAY early for the maturity of the plant. I have okries fruiting 8-12 inches tall. Taters 4 inches with fruit in the ground. Tomatoes in the ground in several locations that used to do well, now they are barely putting up plants. Raised beds doing much better which is backwards from prior years. Keep up your good work. Hope to see you soon. ***Also looking at the pine straw deal around the plants. Never thought of that in the garden...

@LazyDogFarm2 жыл бұрын
Not one of the yellows. I think the fish trick only works if you do it year after year. Takes too long to break down in the first year, and so the benefits are more long term. At least that's my thought process currently ...

@@LazyDogFarm so you did bones, guts, and all? What was the size of the fish? I've put some whole 13" fish under plants and got great results the same year. I grew Dr Wiche and Kellog's Breakfast last year. They were pretty good but I really like more acidic tomatoes. I have very limited space to grow (small outside area of condo) so due to the high grocery prices, etc. this year I focused on my favorite most productive varieties. I mostly have determinates Celebrity, Roma and Bella Rosa. I am also trying a couple of the indeterminate Jet Star as every year Living Traditions Homestead grow those and love them. Other than those I have a few cherry tomato plants, Supersweet 100, Juliet, and Sun Sugar. I'm trying this year to get the most bang for my buck. I actually started some other varieties Grand Marshall as one but I neglected to keep up the watering and feeding under the grow lights and they just never took off. I've got a few dwarf and micro dwarf varieties planted in a GreenStalk planter to see how those do.

I can't figure out all the hoopla around the Jet Star tomato. That's an old hybrid that doesn't have that great of a disease-resistance package. If I'm going to grow a hybrid, it better be "suited and booted" with all kinds of disease-resistance.

I'm growing about 20 different varieties of tomatoes in two 4x8 raised beds under 40% shade cloth and trying to find a variety that does well in the southwest desert. I'm growing Sakata's 2255 and Roadster. 2255 was the first to produce a few good size tomatoes at the bottom of the plant but not much further up the vine. Roadster has produced more smaller tomatoes, but they have taken longer to start ripening. I'm picking them as soon as they start turning. I have Bella Rosa, Grand Marshall, Red Snapper, and Thunderbird seed starts that I hope to plant in July. The monsoon is starting up and the afternoon and evening temperatures should be lower and hopefully these plants will set more fruit. Your plants are loaded with tomatoes and mine are embarrassing in comparison. Does trip tape increase fruit set and size? I have a drip kit for raised beds but couldn't find one with drip tape. Also, do you have any suggestions for keeping birds from getting at your tomatoes? One grackle has pecked at a dozen tomatoes so far. I purchased a plastic owl but it didn't deter it. I'm in the process of covering the sides with shade cloth because the bird netting I bought was a tangled mess. Cheers!Thanks for sharing your tomato plants and growing expertise!

The benefit of the drip tape is that the plants are never stressed and the root zone always has moisture. I can't speak to how much it increases fruit set and size, but I wouldn't grow tomatoes without it.

@@LazyDogFarm I am going to look for a way to used drip tape for our raised bed garden, but it will have to wait for next year. Thanks for the reply and have a good one!

Have u tried Bella Rosa? I like them especially in the heat

I've grown it many times and it always does well. Lately though I've been leaning towards the determinants that make larger fruits, like the Red Snapper and Roadster.

I'm growing Roadster and Hy-Beef 9904 this year, I've never grown either before. It's still very early in the season here but I can say that the Hy-Beef 9904 is a taller and much more vigourous plant. Both have just barely started to bloom so I can't say what production will be like.

Interesting. Roadster has a much better disease package, but it may not matter where you live.

@@LazyDogFarm Tomato diseases are extremely rare around here, the only problem I've ever had was late blight in an unusually cold and damp year, it's normally very dry. I suspect the height difference is just variety based, the amount of blooms on both are very similar at the moment. I have had big tomato plants that didn't produce well, and smaller tomato plants were great producers in the past, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see which variety does better in my climate.

Growing Tachi’s for the first time and supper Impressed worth production. They are all still green, but there are >20 tomatoes on the plant. What’s been your experience with Tachi’s?
@LazyDogFarm2 жыл бұрын
My experience is that they are extremely productive, so much so that I have a hard time keeping the plants upright when they get loaded.
