I see this kind of calling video a lot for begginers it is really good, after you have blown and tuned your calls for a few years you realize the short comings of each type of call. Short reed, flute, resonance cavity. Short reeds have about the cleanest sound however lower tones are hard to get when you have it tuned for a high break, and high breaks are hard when you have it tuned for a great lower end. The noise I tell people how to use is make a nail gun noise then put the calls to your mouth and do it again. But the thing I see that's weird is a short Reed is kinda like sitting on a balloon to blow, your really just changing pressure in and out of the call when blowing. Lower end you choke down the pressure higher end you upen up the pressure. After you learn this you are basically just blowing from the diaphragm and cutting off the air with your tongue and changing the pressure of the call with your hands and all the notes are the same machanics, you just speed up slow down open up and close off. So that's what I've asertained and there is,a few videos that come close to telling you this but stop short like it's something that you have to figure out yourself instead of showing that first and showing how to use it in hunting situations. I'd like to see some videos where people in the blind with a good camera man and voice over and actually work birds into the decoys with one person calling,two etc... and cadences to use at what times and how the birds react because where I'm at you see it in the field all the time, then some noob comes in that didn't do there homework and blows open framed honks that don't finish or wine off or decending notes instead of acending because they watched a video like this and scare the birds off, so I will say always finish a honk or cluck or growl with a cluck or a double cluck with a cluck. The honk ahh honk ahh is not a sound that goose make I tried calling like that for years because I saw it on every video and yeah we had some geese come in. But yeah it's a note you can hit on a goose call and yeah goose don't make that noise. There honks or clicks or growls are there vocabulary. Double clicks are two birds , that dumb honk ahh noise is supposed to be a smear of sound when you have a lot of birds or multiple callers and by itself it says don't land hear we have retarded geese. Haha I wouldn't have said anything or left a comment but that noise is my biggest pet peive in the field because if you are lining up geese with a resonance cavity 3 miles out, then you switch to a short Reed and wait for them to come close hit them with a few honks to line up, then give them feeding chatter on the approach and sock them with growls and clucks to go feet down, and anywhere in the mix someone in a blind a mile away hits that stupid note you see them do a huge wtf midair and fly for the next state!

I've personally found that flutes sound really good up close but if you back off 100-200 yards they sound like childrens toys. If you dont believe me, set up a camera and mic and then drive away and call back towards it. Your amazing calling sounds comical at a distance. They can be very successful on close geese, more of a finishing call.. As in you have geese that want to come in and the flutes give them a few notes to reassure them. I've never in my life seen anyone with a flute pull down a flock of migrators or run traffic in fields or water. There is a reason you hardly ever see "hard core hunters" using them, and its not because they don't know what a flute is. There are A LOT of old timers who use flutes in the area I hunt, and they kill a lot of geese. Early season, and late freeze up when the geese are retarded. Mid season when you have to sweet talk them and work pressured birds, they duck hunt. They'll be the first to make fun of guys blowing "those screechy short reeds" though, when we are pulling down flocks out of the heavens and they are blowing their bicycle horns at them. Same excuses at the ramp every time "the geese all want your spot. We weren't using enough decoys. You guys had first crack at them coming down the river". As you can tell, I'm not a fan of the flutes nor the novices that swear by them. An expert with a flute sounds about as good as an average caller on a $15 short reed.

So I want to say great video, but I want to state a couple opinions of my own. First off I'll start by saying I'm pretty damn good on a flute but wanted to give the short reed call a try I'll explain why shortly. # 1 (DO BUY) a flute call! Here's why picking up the basics of calling geese is far easier on a flute then it is on a short reed, and in my opinion being able to call geese in even with basic calls on a flute is better then having a short reed call on your lanyard and not using it cause you suck with it. #2 I have called in more geese then I could ever count with a flute. That being said I do find that a flute limits the type of calling you can do. If you're looking to do some of the more advanced calling then the short reed call is far superior which is why I am making the switch to short reed. At the end of the day if you can call in geese with a flute or short reed then use it and smash some birds!

I don’t think he means the flute is a bad call because they do have their place, but the short reed is a lot easier to be more versatile with. And for all you know he has a shoe box full of bands. Just because you have bands doesn’t make you a better hunter, I only have 6 and I know guys who have gotten 5 in their first year hunting, before the early season was even over, because they hunt fields close to where the dnr bands them in the summer. You sound ignorant.

@Chompchompyerded6 жыл бұрын
Damn I'm glad y'all don't know the first thing about the various languages of various species and sub-species of geese on the different flyways. It's the one thing that keeps hunting a reasonable (though sometimes seriously flawed) form of population control, rather than a wholesale slaughter. Usually the reason they're coming in is because you've got the curiosity of the flight manager up and s/he has given the order to land, not because you've said anything that makes one damn bit of sense to them. There. I've just given you the one best piece of information that anyone will ever give you. You'll never hear it from one of these equipment peddlers or a guide. They're just trying to sell you stuff often by using pseudo-science. Instead of trying to mimic them (because you don't know thing one about their very complex language - and probably don't even know that they're sentient and have an intelligence which is closer to yours than it is to your dog's) try instead to capture their innate curiosity. Think off calling in a toddler and you'll get better success. Oh, and don't get confused and shoot the toddler even if at times you'd really like to (joking lest there be any doubt). But seriously, geese of most species (excluding domestic breeds) think both hierarchically and exponentially, which until just under a decade ago was thought to be the exclusive provenance of humans. That means that when you take it upon yourself to take the life of one of these birds, you should do so with respect, dignity, and humanely as possible. Don't take any shot that isn't a sure kill shot. Run lots of shot through your shotgun's barrel during the off season with the intention being to kill as many clay pigeons as possible with as few shells as possible. If you're missing one clay a box that's too many. Practice more. If you're missing one per every four boxes you're getting there. You literally cannot practice too much though, and if you can't go through four boxes of clays with no more than one miss, then you should stop hunting these birds until you can, and if you never can, then its time to lock up ol' trusty in the gun safe, or sell/give it to a good home. Be a good sportsman, and never be a sky buster. Before you take aim on one of these birds again, I would like you to spend some serious thinking time about what it means to kill a being which is every bit as intelligent as you were in your younger years, whose memory is far better than yours was at that age, whose language far surpasses ours in many ways (how's 122 words & gestures that I know of for "water" strike you for starters?), and all the same feelings and emotions we have (happiness, joy, excitement, love, anger, hatred, fear, sadness, grief and many more). After you have that knowledge firmly in your mind, I want you to spend some more time thinking deeply and honestly about how you justify taking a life of that level. Personally, It doesn't matter to me what conclusion you reach (as long as it isn't something really dark and twisted that you intend to carry out on humans too). The only thing that matters to me is that you DO think about it. If you can justify it don't be surprised if one day you take a limit, and the next time out you may find yourself surrounded by five-hundred times a limit unable to take a shot because you're laughing inside (and trying to keep it silent) as you watch what they do with and to your decoys. You will never look at at geese the same way again.
