In hot climates when Gopro overheats, soak the wind foam with a bit of water, then squeeze it out so it's just damp. Refresh between long runs with your water bottle. Careful to ensure lens doesn't get drops on it.

I got a GoPro sponge ( wind muffler ) and found they work amazing! Considering it’s a piece of sponge and the alternative is a plug in mic.

I found it if I export it to HEVC (Davinci Studio version support it) and upload it to youtube, the playback is almost as the original in 4k. Also, Davinci with good graphics card can edit HECV (4k@60 frames) without the need for a proxy or optimized media.

Ps all Gopro's own promo POV videos are shot in 4:3.....and the manuals (not bike manuals!!) have recommended that setting for years. It not only uses more of the sensor ....which is 4:3....but for a chesty or chin mount without a gimbal the changing field of view caused by you changing the angle of your upper body/head can be corrected in post by cropping to 16:9 and moving the frame up or down.
@RobRidesEMTB5 жыл бұрын
Yeah totally agree however with Hypersmooth you cannot utilise the 4:3 with the full sensor, it just crops down to a 4:3 frame. With a gimbal 4:3 full sensor is good. On my Hero 4 I’d always shoot 4:3 then dynamically stretch the sides to fill into a 16:9 frame. Looks good with the extra height.
@mikerbwind5 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob here is a different approach. I have used Gopro for years now and currently using the Hero 7 Black. I use my Gopro for MTB ( not your standard!) and windsurfing. Both really challenge any camera. For windsurfing the ever changing shape of water and potential reflection of the sun off the water makes for a lot of changing image for Gopro to grab: in the woods there is constant hanging liht and most of the trail side scenery offers little focus "crosses"....so again very difficult for any camera. 4k is OK when the Gopro is stationary but on a chesty or mounted on a windsurfer? So nearly always use a 4:3 format..typically 1440...and I always use 50 (60 fps). I then crop that footage to 16:9 in post. You will see absolutely no resolution loss when viewing on an HD PC screen or HD TV.....the vast majority of which are 1080p and 60 fps. I render with fairly high bit rate at 1080/50. Editing is of course also a lot easier with much smaller files and less processing power required. At 1440/50 with full stabilisation the format is still H264 which is far easier for any PC to manage than HEVC which always requires proxy editing. Gopro at 1440 still copies to the SD card at a pretty high bit rate but not as high as 4k so it also offers fewer problems with Sd card reliability ( gopro buffer is pretty small). Check out the results on my YT channel..."mikerbwind". The 2019 vids are using the Hero 7.

Hi Rob, 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 love this video. I have literally just purchased a Hero 7 Black as I will be going to try and complete the Tree Top Challenge with my friends. And as I will be Vlogging with my phone I wanted something that will capture the course. This video was so informative in terms of settings and I love it. If possible any tips and clarification on settings I should use for the Tree Top course? I would love to grab some great cinematic footages where I can so your advice on settings will be much appreciated. Also does your gopro overheat? I have been testing all day as I wanted to see how long the battery will last in one shot. I realised if I shoot at 4k with 60fps it heats up quite abit. Also on 1080p at 160fps heated and drained battery quick. I found the balance of 1080p on 60fps gave me around 45min. Any tips on how to safeguard from overheating? Assume will be taking shorter videos. However with my lack of experience on treetops one obstacle may take 5-10min 🤦🏽♂️. Advice will be much appreciated. Thank you, now time to watch part 2 👍🏽

Hello Rob. Probably not your kind of video but you could do a hands-on video for that chin mount bracket. I say it because chin mount for mtb is becoming more and more popular and in my personal experience I looked for a review/test of that bracket but there's nothing really useful out there (if you do a quick search on YT you'll see what I mean). Personally, I'm skeptical about the stability under load+shakes seeing that is a soft mount compared to rigid accesories that can be zip tied etc. Could be useful to you to know that searching,extensively, for that kind of mount didn't show this video (I was mostly searching using the brand's mount keyword). Cheers

Brilliant - I too have the GoPro 7 and also a couple of GoPro Sessions that are so small they can be fitted anywhere to capture unusual angles. I bought the very same chin mount that you recommended but are a little "shy" to wear my full-face helmet as no-one else in my group wears full-face, so I am restricting my videos to chesty shots. With the GP7 I go rid of my gimbal - Can't wait for part 2 as I love the quality of your videos and want to see how you achieve such good results.

As a dinosaur I'm still using a Hero 4 and gimbal but am tempted by the simplicity of the 7 set up. Really enjoying your output, keep up the good work.

Chris Wheeler yes I did have freezing when using 24p actually, as soon as I changed to 30p it seemed to fix it. Although they are still a bit buggy. I’ll sometimes get broken Hypersmooth where it will jitter all over the place. But I’d say this is one in 50 clips (or less!).

Very interesting. But I could never be bothered. My motto is if I can't remember something, it wasn't worth remembering anyway. So I rarely take photos and simply focus on what I'm seeing/experiencing, and not mucking about with camera gear or staring thru a viewfinder.
@RobRidesEMTB5 жыл бұрын
Yes sometimes it’s nice to ride without any hassles, I agree 👍
@mikerbwind5 жыл бұрын
yep sometimes using a gopro feels like a "spy in the sky" and makes you conscious of what you are doing in case it looks bad on video BUT there are some benefits of videoing your ride which are often overlooked. POV footage when reviewed can remind you of the lines you selected and how well or badly you dealt with berms or drops etc. More informative is non POV footage...either you fix the cam on a tree or something by a jump and ride past it, or you get you riding buddy to follow with a cam. Review of that footage can tell you a lot about your riding and also how the bike is handling...suspension travel etc. If you consider how you learn ( e.g. Kolb's learning circle), post event reflection is a very important stage. Reviewing video can aid that part of the learning process.

@RobRidesEMTB5 жыл бұрын
The Penetrator yeah that’s annoying. Mine are not freezing as much since the latest firmware updates.
@mikerbwind5 жыл бұрын
Freezing seems to be occurring if you use Quik Capture...so a void using that mode for now. Most common cause other than that with all gopros is SD card problems. Best to run a full SD test on any card you buy...if it does not meet the standard on the label ( and quite a few do not) take it back and get a refund. I have bought Class 10 cards in the past that had regular low bit rate glitches when tested. You can find SD test programs on the internet.

Thanks Rob - You share a lot of value here for other creators, and I found several parts very helpful... Subscribed & going to watch part 2 now. :) I like the idea of your Smallrig cold shoe mount, which raises the mic dead-cat muffler higher up, to avoid it getting in the shot - Been looking for something like this for a while! Question > Could you also share where you got the extra microphone muffler fabric material that you have velcro'd onto the GoPro? [One minor thing I noticed in your video you might find helpful - You have a cool studio setup, with a great background... but I would move the coats hanging up behind you (on your right), as it slightly reduces that cool studio backdrop setting]

24 fps will have more motion blur than 30 fps and you don't need as much light for the same exposure as the "shutter" can be open for longer. I hate auto white balance, it isn't that smart and changes quite bad depending on the colour in the background. This is for Scotland mind you ha ha ha ha ha.
@RobRidesEMTB5 жыл бұрын
24p will only have more motion blur if you can get the shutter speed down. Otherwise you have a digital looking file due to an extremely high shutter speed. 24p will let more light into the sensor but the shutter speed has to compensate for this and it ramps up real high. If you are riding in the day, 24p will require ND filters to get to around 180 degree shutter rule. But ND filters / Hypersmooth don’t work well together. I’ve tried. 😊
@MTBScotland5 жыл бұрын
That's assuming the aperture stays the same the shutter speed will increase but I don't think that would be the case. I've not noticed anything but then I've not ridden in sun shine with my hero 7 black yet :( This would be down to personal preference. some prefer 24 or 30 or even 60 for riding. The only thing I don't like about 24fps is trying to get a thumbnail from the footage isn't easy due to blur.
