I do EXACTLY the same settings with the exception of 2 settings: My upper ISO is set only to 400 on super sunny days (I've been pretty happy with that), and on cloudy days, my ISO is 3200, but I use a white balance of Native. Other than that, you nailed it regarding what settings seem best. Staying AWAY from Sharpening makes a WORLD of difference! Great Video!
@ChadwickRider4 жыл бұрын
Agree ... for bright sunny beach I set max iso even lower at 200 (w/ 5500 WB).
@yutehube44683 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right. Old 120 film (6cm x 6cm negatives) of the past never looked over-sharpened, because it was simply impossible. Now with digital, it's good that we can back off on the over-sharpening these cameras do.

13:00 Ah this is something lot of people get confused on with RAW audio. Turning this on does nothing to the audio on the video file, it creates a separate audio file next to the video file. Depending on what you set RAW to, it’ll either do zero processing, or give you a slightly less (over) processed result. You’ll have to sync the audio track in post, which is why I normally don’t recommend it for first timers. Another great video otherwise!
@okletsgo91353 жыл бұрын
I'm still confused. If I plan on recording a bike ride, and I don't want the wind to ruin the experience of the video, why would I turn Wind Reduction from auto to off? It seems counterintuitive, but I'm a beginner, so could you maybe explain this to me? Thank you. I also bought a wind muff that covers the entire camera.
@DaveLisowski3 жыл бұрын
@@okletsgo9135 I'm just now seeing your comment, and you may have figured it out by now, but the electronic wind reduction doesn't sound great. It cuts the audio in weird ways and can make it sound very "thin" or even robotic. Basically, the methodology in this video is to remove the need for electronic wind reduction by using physical wind reduction (via the mini dead cats he puts on). A lot of the time, the tiny bit of wind noise you'll get with the dead cat on will still sound WAY better than the electronic wind reduction doing its thing.
@okletsgo91353 жыл бұрын

They do have a wind foam case for it, that way your gopro still looks nice at the end of the day, it does great with wind, and you can just take it off and put other cases on it also. (I have a gopro hero 8) 15:00 The case also costs like $8 and protects it too.
@softbreeze9414 жыл бұрын
Foam acts really poorly against fur which is basically transforming the force of the air movement into moving physical hair furs. Foam just has tunnels for the wind to spread away from mic but most of the wind can still get trough in windy conditions. It might work well with just the wind of riding the bike but when there already is heavy wind on top of the mountain the fur is the deal!

That has to do which codec you get from youtube: avc1 or VP09. Basically, it means that when you have VP09 you get a better image on youtube. To get this you've got two options. Or you need to get more subscribers and views or upload in 1440p or above. I had the same problem with my videos as well and since I've uploaded in 1440p I automatically get VP09. I found that when exporting my footage from Adobe Premier editing the KZbin 4k export settings from 1 pass to 2 pass render gave much better results. 1 pass works fine if the footage is stationary, however when you are flying over dirt and past trees the 2 pass method does better and your footage doesn’t end up looking like mud. Also KZbin compresses footage more in 1080p than in 4k, so watching the same footage in 1080 will be more pixilated than watching the same footage at 4k simply due to how much compression KZbin applies.

Better to remove wind noise mechanically using a deadcat or deadkitten instead of using wind noise reduction software. You can always remove some noise in post production if you need to, but then you have at least raw data and more freedom to get it how you want it to be.

The best way to get bike audio noise is to use something like a zoom audio recorder. Mount it under the seat. The benefit of those is you can control the input gain so It doesn't distort. @Northern Amauta 24fps would be cinematic with a 1/24 or 1/48 shutter speed but that doesn't work well with the HyperSmooth stabilisation that you generally want to be on when capturing a bike video. In addition, the lens used in an action camera won't produce "cinematic" footage as everything is in focus and there is no depth of field. Horizon leveling (at least in my experience) is limited not because it doesn't do a good job but because it forces you to shoot in linear mode and if you're wanting to capture POV action with a gopro wide or superview is going to produce a much better shot. Ok so I'm riding my motorcycle in standard mode with wind setting to Auto. Beautiful sound like it should. So then I move to Custom mode with all your settings (cloudy day, beautiful capture of video footage) The wind was set to Off. It captured the wind to an annoying degree. I mean really bad. So I changed the wind back to auto and no more wind sound. By the way I got the dead cat wind blockers but was not using them at the time of the above recordings. Anyway Thanks again for doing this video. The settings you recommended were spot on.

Thank you. The one thing I'm really not liking IS those bright sunlight spots on the ground. They just wash everything away, and like you said, have no detail ... they look like crap to. I can colour tweak in my editing program ... that'll be a bit of a learning curve, cuz you can really mess it up. But this helps alot to get the filming side and create a little less work in "Post". So thank you.

Thanks for the advice. Some of my fans have complained about the sound. And the video settings are helpful too. But, I ain’t giving my GoPro a mustache 😂

Subbed for a fellow Canadian. Great work and I"m waiting for Hero 8 Black to arrive. Was going to take it boarding this year, but after my fall, my season might be done. Can't wait for the summer though when we can hopefully all be normal again!

@theloamranger First of all, I totally respect your process and I admire your technique. Your production quality is the best I have found for your style of content. That being said, I must respectfully disagree with the auto wind noise setting on the Hero 7, 8 and 9. I have been using them without muffs of any kind for a few years now and I feel I have had GREAT results (not perfect) using the auto setting. When the wind does encroach on my footage, I either deal with it (I use music in my vids, and that helps a lot) or I don't use that part of the clip (it's rare that my videos would be ruined by losing a 3-second clip of wind noise). But to each their own... I did purchase some of those dead cat patches that I'll be experimenting with. I will to tests with and without them and also with and without the auto setting enabled. We'll see where that road leads... I have also been using them without any stabilizer/gimbal and my footage isn't too bad (I think it's a fair compromise to have a *tiny* bit of shake if that means I don't need to have all that hardware strapped to my helmet. (Oh, yeah - I use a helmet mount, not a chest mount. I have found it. works FAR better in terms of stabilization and smoothness). Regardless of my personal preference, I want to make sure you know that your stuff is GREAT - I am loving every minute of it. I have decades of experience in broadcast graphics and editing, and I truly admire your quality. Keep up the GREAT work! (I just joined your Patreon)

Well done Ryan, off my bike from injury but I did get the 9 and started to play with it. Basically the same as the 7 with few changes. I did get some deadcats and will be turning off the wind setting. Looking forward to checking it out. I am really missing my Ripmo and now the weather in BC is changing. All this week will be hero dirt and I can't ride!!

Great video; exactly why I subbed. I will note that if you encode your videos using VidCoder/Handbrake, it seems to remove the GoPro grading and change the output video to the 'flat' profile. This can serve as a workaround for those of us that mistakenly bought a Silver on the cheap.
