I did it in 2022, well, not my first build by a long shot, but it's been a while. I got 7900X and 4090. 4090 because I was making the leap from 1440p to 4k, and I was kinda including 'far reaching' longevity in the price comparisons. It does what I want at 4k 'raw native/max', and I still have DLSS to fall back on. 7900X was mostly just because of a sale that was too good to pass up. Apart from an opportunistic sale, I would be torn between 7950X and 7800X3D (as I have mixed use). Really I needed newer mobo features even more than I needed a new cpu, so.. the 7900X at $350 with -$30 towards an AM5 mobo & 32GB of free 6000 ram is hard to regret. I have both very _slightly_ underclocked and very significantly undervolted. And the card very very securely mounted/supported, and cord in extra tight. 7800X3D & 7900XTX is probably smarter. You can probably bench very nearly as strong, with a cheaper build than mine. Granted the 7800X3D was just a rumor when I built mine and I do think the 4090 has strong odds on lasting an extra generation (in terms of back-loaded value). I could see myself replacing my 7900X cpu much sooner than the 4090. Was kinda thinking the 9800X3D, but the 9000 series seems like a flop. Seriously though, 7800X3D/7900XTX is a beastly combo, good pick!

If you had a graphics card with more memory than 16GB, more VRAM would be reserved than necessary for the same display. The 4060 ti runs on a 128-bit bus. You only have 4 memory chips with 4GB each. The 3070 with 8GB VRAM 256-bit bus with 8 memory chips has better performance in WQHD. Basically, the 4060 ti is more like a 4050, but people who think more VRAM creates better performance don't understand how a graphics card works and why the 16GB version doesn't create any added value in gaming. I seriously hope that people don't buy the graphics card because it's actually a scam.

Well done, I did similar here in UK 1 month ago... Asus RoG Strix 3090 OC 24GB used for £585 Even if we wait for 50 series the prices and power usage will be ridiculous and scalpers will cause stock issues for new 50 series cards which will again drive up used prices for high end 30 and 40 series cards - we both made the right choice now buying used high end before 50 series launch.

It'll do for 3-4 generations as all Nvidia/AMD cards are. RTX was the exception due to the Ray tracing craze that offered literally nothing. 2000 series cards will be fine till 5000 series pop. However if you like what the neighbors always have by all means chuck $500-$1000 every year into the fireplace, as long you are ok with it then it's perfectly fine.

But the 1440p panel was kinda falling apart... so... I have _reasonably_ high hopes the 4090 will last me till around 2030. Right now it does everything I want it to in raw-native 4k, with max settings - and I still have DLSS to fall back on. And can always actually back off of max settings hehe. I think, that with nvidia's marketing practices... if they release anything significantly better, they will charge significantly more. Which is kinda anti-consumer, but silver lining: it means there's not a lot of point worrying too much about the generation. Mining cards being bad is a myth, purile hog wash. Mis treated cards fail due to dmg, mining was a business for many and they took care of their investments knowing they would have to sell off older to buy newer. @stangamer115127 күн бұрын
While you are technically right (if you are looking at this situation from a certain angle), it will not necessary end up like this. One of the most VRAM demanding setting is RT. 7900 XTX can run many games with RT now, but in the not so distant future it will not be able to do this. So you will actually need less VRAM, once you stop using RT. In 3-4 years even the owners of 4080 will be forced to stop using RT. And by that time 4K res will be out of question for both of these cards too. This means that VRAM requirements will go down again, since lower res needs less VRAM. Judging by how demanding modern games are in terms of raw GPU power, I really think it will become a bottleneck sooner than VRAM capacity, especially if we talking about 16GB buffer.

Then I still prefer having more VRAM since I can play modded games with texture mods that far exceed 16 GB already and generally games are not gettign smaller texture-wise.
@stangamer115115 күн бұрын
@@Greenalex89 SW Outlaws is NOT essentially using 18-22GB. It is just allocating all the available VRAM on a card (this is how Snowdrop engine functions) More important is the fact that this and many other modern games are very demanding in terms of raw GPU power. 4080 is simply not fast enough to run SWO at 4K/maxed out, even with DLSS Quality. And when you reduce/disable some settings, VRAM requirement also lowers. Plus, yesterday's patch (v1.1.1) has already improved the game memory management. Now even 12GB cards do not struggle from texture pop-in issues at 1440p. So 16GB is definitely enough to run this game at 4K and reasonable quality settings. P. S. Judging by how demanding some recent games are, all 16GB cards will run out of compute power way before their VRAM buffers become an issue.

Games usually reserve more VRAM when there is more VRAM available. With Horizon, with identical settings, you can see that more VRAM is reserved if there is available, but that doesn't mean that the application really needs more VRAM. With 128 bit on the 4060ti 16Gb, you shouldn't aim for WQHD gaming; even if it had 50GB VRAM, the 4070 super with 12GB VRAM would still be 50% faster. It's the same with RAM, if you install more, more is reserved, but it doesn't create any added value. With a low-end graphics card, performance doesn't improve just because you install 32 or 64GB of RAM. Unfortunately, I see with many ready-made PCs that the setups lure in customers with large numbers rather than offering a sensible setup.

If I'm running a budget midrange card, I'll never have the settings cranked. I'm targeting 100+ fps at 1440p so I'll drop all settings & only turn up what is necessary or that whitch isn't impactful to performance. This puts more load on the CPU & AMDs drivers tend to offer more headroom here but I can't tell how much because *NO ONE EVER TESTS IT!* This is a chance to differentiate yourself from what everybody else does.

14:16 Daniel hits the nail on the head: Nvidia's offerings go from meh to suckage below $500 precisely because they "win" at the high end, and Nvidia full well knows that some people will rather take a worse deal than accept "the sour smell of discount products" :P

Not that simple. Under $500 is budget now. That's all. 4070 suoer is midrange. 👍

@@DingleBerryschnapps Yes it is that simple. It doesn't matter what you consider budget and what you consider midrange. Under $500 all Nvidia's offering plainly suck compared to AMD. Between $500 and $800 it becomes more of a personal preference thing, and above $800 AMD loses in most people's eyes. And that is why Nvidia "can afford" to suck under $500. Their "big wins" influence a lot of people who don't really keep up with tech developments.

Turning on raytracing when the card then delivers 33fps is a horrid idea. Completely unplayable game at that point. Same with 44fps on the opposite card. I doubt anyone would actually choose those settings. Raytracing would get switched off and the FPS would climb to a hopefully acceptable level for gaming. Not having the non RT option in the comparison seems a dubious choice as well.
