In this video, I’ll detail the two-pack “gray man” system my wife and I will rely on should we have to abandon our home and run. In keeping with my commitment to you, I do a lot of homework and plan these projects carefully, so you have the best-possible starting point for your own projects. If I've done my job, the video will both validate and refute some of your beliefs, and perhaps present new ideas you’ve never considered.

It's a super minor thing, but In the military we would strip down MRE's of all the outer packaging, and wrap them in tape to hold it all together. It cuts down on waste and volume.

The oiter shell of the mre might be quite valuable in an emergency situation since its watertight and robust.

They are hard to find but a waterproof miltary issue ruck sack liner water proof...worked great in central america for 1 month of jungle warefare training. Heat tabs were used below ground levels 4 eliminating a heat signature if infared was being used to locate a position. A cigarette being smoked would glow up to 1 mile away at night. Materials to shield from heat signatures is a must. Can be used 4 multiple purposes. Light infantry 3 years. 1 year 8 months any where on earth.

You definitely deserve an A+ for your bug-out bag planning skills. This is one of the best thought-out bug-out bag videos I have seen. I am constantly changing the contents of my Rush 72 pack in a quest for the perfect supplies to weight ratio and you have given me some very good ideas. Thanks for the excellent video.

Thanks for the very kind comment. I think we’re of the same mind, studying, refining, rebuilding - looking for the most effective and elegant load out. I think one of the most important aspects is planning so most activities (snacking, navigating, treating injuries, washing up, collecting water, signaling) would require the absolute minimum in unpacking / repacking. This really adds utility, and also reduces vulnerability.

If I may, I would recommend you downsize your pack. I own a portion of the RUSH series of packs, and from personal experience I can validly say that the 72hr pack is far too large for Lightweight Packing. With SOOOO much room, it invites you to fill and fill and fill. If you downsize to the RUSH12/RUSH24, you’d have more of a Lightweight mindset by having to sacrifice larger equipment or redundancies for more reasonably lighter gear and less of the same thing.

@@DesertPrep I just stumbled across this video And I too am extremely familiar with the desert environment I'm also in my 50s as I believe you and your wife might be Though your packs may look impressive to an outsider I can tell you right away that I doubt you will have 24 hours to live with these packs They might look like something that Tom Cruise might carry in a mission impossible video or something that Bruce Willis might about in one of his Die Hard films but I can tell you right now all this stuff you're going to be dumping 70% of this stuff Within 24-hours especially if you think you're on some kind of a never coming home Mission or it's the end of the world apocalypse I'm telling you you're going to dump 70% of this stuff out like junk. And then of course you're going to have the problem of the marauder and I would be able to see you from 5 miles away out in the desert especially if you're in an inclined floodplain and I've got even a slight height Advantage I will see you and any little bit of light emitting from your location from at least 20,000 feet distance. It will be easy to sneak up on you. A Marauder can be wrong 99% of the time. A good Marauder only needs to be right once. In an shtf situation where Society has collapsed and we're looking at apocalypse and Armageddon all that stuff that you have in your backpacks is going to be completely abandoned and useless because you are going to be on the run and that's what I'm telling you is that as a Marauder I'm going to divide you and your wife I'm going to put panic in to both of you I'm going to put distraction into both of you you're going to build fear you're going to question the unknown and I'm going to set you running. And at the time and location of my choosing is when the marauder is going to strike. Like most Marauder philosophy they only have to be right one time like a coyote the coyote only has to be right once in a pack of hundreds of rabbits. The desert is one of the worst places to seek shelter. Especially in the open deserts. good luck with that and thanks for making me a beautiful shopping list that I'm sure you've spent a significant amount of money on. LOL. P.S. and thanks also for your telling me what your body weight is 190 lb that means you're likely overweight even if you're six foot two that just makes you a taller Target and if you're only 5 10 and you weigh 190 lb that means you're overweight and out-of-shape

Your packs are really good. Since you live close to the desert and you have maps of the area i would be a good ideia to do two things: one create 2 or 3 caches in the desert with food, water, shelter and other supplies that you can use if the 72 hour barrier is broken or if one of the backpacks is lost; second get a decent second hand jeep and prepare it for overlanding, it will be a great platform to use in a bug out situation since it will instantly provide shelter (with or without a rooftop tent), protection from the elements, storage for food and water and increases mobility.

The silcock key is brilliant, and I absolutely never thought of it. While of no use outside of an urban setting (or more properly, in a wilderness/Bushcraft survival setting), the odds of you starting out there is low, and you might not be home to fill your water containers if something haappens that makes the bags necessary. A genius addition.
@Patrickjohnphotography

I know I can use my Silcock key about every 50ft in the City, you might consider one because the 'burbs and beyond are full of franchise restaurants with the standard commercial build. The key would work there for you in a pinch. it's a great ROI.

Chow is a crutch my man, you don't need it. In your environment you're going to run into water issues wayyyy before food issues. Your body can easily handle a 72hr fast but dehydration is quickly fatal. As an Infantryman I'm telling you, In that heat you might be able to get away with 4L a day static, but if you're moving over rough terrane with a pack you should go ahead and double that. Besides, if your stressed out you won't even feel hungry. What I'd focus on is Water, water, shade to keep you cool and help you save water (maybe some ultralight tent stakes, cordage and a tarp you can set up as shelter from the sun), more water, electrolytes (WHO formula rehydration salts come in convenient packaging and weigh almost nothing) and then a few tools and flashlights and things.

Great, well thought out video, you used much more brain power than I can muster! I agree, bugging in is my first choice but the wife and I do have our own similarly equipped bug out bags which we keep in the car/van. Our self protection items (fire arms) we carry are a separate thing with each sporting 9mm pistols , and rifles , one of which is in .22lr We are not in a desert environment so we also carry a fishing kit in each of our bags and some hot hands heaters. Our bags fit within the 15% of body weight (not counting firearms.) Both rifles can be carried broken down and carried in rain proof covers attached to the packs.

I will have to watch your video a couple more times and take some notes before I give any thoughts on what I would have vs what I would t have with me in my pack. I do have to say that you probably have the best video I have ever seen, when it comes to a full comprehensive video. I like the fact that you don’t have a long video that goes no where. You are very strategic and straight to the point when giving your explanation of your mindset when putting together your packs. I am very much glad that I came across this video. I will definitely like & subscribe. As I have been typing my response I remembered that lately I have gone back & forth on having cooking kits with me in my packs. Especially My “Greyman” 72hr Pack. I have been watching videos on MRE reviews and I’m kind of a fan of the little MRE heat packs. Though that also requires trying out a few MRE’s before hand so that you can pack something you like. Currently I have Mountain House meals, with those I just a hot water and seal the bag. I will message you later after I ponder 🤔 the items I will be carrying.

I live in Las Vegas area. I appreciate the effort you have gone to for this video. My approach is more complicated after consideration of situations. One is to focus on distance to destination. Typically I am several miles from home (destination to return to). So i have bag A to grab from my car and head home. Assumption is car no longer works. I can walk several miles with light bag. If hot over 100 water in grabbed. Next distance is about 5 miles. Then 15 then bag B. At 15 i may have to spend the night in urban environment. Therefore i grab different stuff related to the situation. Temp (hot or cold), protection needed, communication, navigation (it maybe shorter going cross country and or over fences etc). So out of about 100 pounds in the car, most would stay and i just grab what i need. Of course if your 100 pounds is valuable, you may never see what you don’t take with you. Which gets to what you put into your car. Obvious next to nothing if short distance but a lot of going 200-500 miles. In that case your goal may or may not be to get home. I take enough supplies for 3 weeks. Example going to Los Angeles and an earthquake hits. 3 weeks allows you to stay outdoors (tent) and food so as not to be a burden on friends etc. You never want to be a refugee example is you are on the highway and disaster hits and you get isolated and you are walking with hundreds of others (that won’t be prepared ). So then what to take. Obvious not 100 pounds so you have to take what you need. If 100° or more water is vital. If it is raining or snowing whole different game. Most of that is based on getting home. Then you have opposite. You have to leave home i.e. disaster. Flood Earthquake etc Have a 5 day naked bag. If you are in the shower and your house is on fire. Grab and run. You have 90 seconds. Most people have only the clothes on their back. Obvious if you have to leave you may never return in some situations or when you do only ashes remain. So that 100 pounds mY be vital. Keep up the excellent work.

Great video. Well made. Gave thumbs up from the get go for the Covrt18 bags. I use one as my EDC/GHB/LBOK. I use my front utility pocket to house all my tools and knives because of the molle webbing and velcro I have my multi-tool, Knife, Flashlight, chemlights and few hanks of cordage. Easy to get to and my wife can access them while the pack is on my back. I keep my food inside the main compartment except that due to Size constraints, I opted for 2 packs of SOS Emergency Rations in Cinnamon and Coconut. 3600 cal each, and each bar inside of the pack is sealed separately and about 400 cal per bar. That ked pouch you have, looks 5.11, 1 SOS pack will fit in it. So the 6x6 pouches, you can easily attach 2 of those pouches to your belt or store inside the bag. Oh yeah. Toss the life straw. Get yourself a 2 pack of sawyer minis at Academy for like 25 bucks a pair. Well worth having. They attach to regular water bottles. Great for urban use. Come with the straw, syringe for backwashing and a foldout bag for carrying water.

My family lives just north of Napa Valley and following the Napa fires last year I decided I wouldn’t be caught unprepared again. My first kit took a very tactical approach but with careful consideration I opted for a much more pragmatic view of preparedness. I took inspiration from many other kits and BOB’s online and rebuilt it. I decided the current 40lb load without water was unreasonable so I’ve incorporated inspiration from ultralight backpacking and I’ve set attainable goals. Goal 1 is 35lb with water. Goals 2 and 3 are 30lb and 25lb with water respectively. This kit will absolutely help me improve my system and it is greatly appreciated.

A close call certainly makes things real. Your approach sounds methodical, and perhaps the following will be helpful... In my research, I found many opinions and theories different people operated under, many of which conflicted. I think some theories are weak because they conflate different situations, and some are at odds with the goals and objectives of the intended use or situation. It was helpful to categorize items as: essential, critical if needed, almost sure to be used, nice to have, and just in case. Items in the last two categories mostly didn’t make the cut. I realized I wasn’t packing for a camping vacation or an extended period, so that meant equipment or supplies appropriate for more than 72 hours were cut as well. Having some guidelines and boundaries really helped, and taking the viewer recommendations on weight seriously made the packs *much* more viable.

I appreciate the video. While living in a very populated urban environment and being disabled I find that a lot of people don't consider disabled people having to bug out. The wife and I decided to get maxpedition pouches for in our 80 year old moms walkers, we also decided to get a heavy-duty collapsible wagon from Costco. There are other options also like collapsible Milwaukee hand trucks and milk crates, four wheel baskets with wheels, collapsible boxes with wheels and handles from office stores, rolling luggage and so on.

Fantastic video! Great planning and thought process. I saw a comment to replace the Kabar with a Mora, totally agree. It’ll save on weight and budget, without giving up quality. I’d also swap the LifeStraw for a Sawyer Mini. It filters smaller particulates, last longer, and has collapsible water containers for greater option. It is also threaded to screw onto a 1 liter Smart Water bottle.

Great video! Well thought out and planned. I don’t have any useful advice to add. I am always renegotiating my bag for weight and serviceability. And this video gives me more to think about. Survival changes as fast as life does, be prepared. 👊🏻

Very good video and very good bug out bag. Your video is both interesting and entertaining. Keep doing these videos and you'll be more than appreciated I hope. Besides, prepping is on the rise in popularity so it's a great format that's both fun to watch but also necessary if various disasters happens which is likely judging by the climate. Have a great day and I hope you will continue making these kind of videos! Regards from Sweden.

Cool! Re-building your bag periodically is very beneficial, and has certainly resulted in a better setup. I hope you find something in the video that improves your next version.

Saving lint from the dryer makes an easy and very lightweight fire starter! Tampons for puncture wounds, maxi pads for deep cuts. Benadryl for anaphylatic shock (Think bee stings, etc) Tylenol for pain or fever, and having spent an EXTENSIVE amount of time hiking and camping, I ALWAYS carry immodium! Dehydration from diarrhea can kill you fast in the wilderness in the summertime! I carry a broadband antibiotic with me, but not many people can access that. And I keep a short length of IV line with filter (0.02 micron filter). Among other things! Good luck and thanks for the video!

Excellent Job!! I grew up in your area, and know the rigors of desert travel. Very complete kits. Very well planned. One of the few that includes the silcock key. I keep one as well. Just an FYI if you are taking dogs. They require 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day i.e. a 10 pound dog needs 10 ounces of water per day. We too have two small dogs that factor into our plans. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work.

Nicely done mate. I am new to your videos, and love surfing various personalities, methods, reasons, etc... Your profile is quite interesting. Older gent you say, hardly restricted in fitness, got the gear and sounds like experience, ready-up for the Apocalypse, the Russians, whatever it might be... ...and you AND the wife (AND the dogs) have your gear sorted. I actually am warmed by this image. It's brilliant. Oh, and I learned something new, in the "roll yourself an egg of clothing" method. Taking that with me :) I'm always confusing socks and tanks. You lot take care of yourselves. I think I'll subscribe. This video was an all around engaging experience.
