Clothing Module for Urban Bug Out Bag | Gray Man

The items in my Clothing Module are meant to compliment my bug out load out clothing that I wear during a bug out scenario. The module is stored inside of the bug out bag itself in a purple packing cube. Purple equates to Clothing in “The Color of Prepping” organization concept. Clothing items are prone to taking up a lot of space in your pack. To help minimize this, I have tried to leverage ultralight gear that is lightweight and compact. The items in the Clothing Module itself also follow the Gray Man approach.

Using a poncho in an urban setting is utilitarian, but also extremely disruptive. Every time I wear a poncho in any kind of urban environment, people stare. I bought a Cabelas brand rain jacket - places that I go, you'll see more Cabelas and Carhart than Patagonia or North Face. I can wear that rain jacket in any urban setting and I'm lost in the crowd - nobody stares, nobody cares. I love it. However, I always carry a poncho in any BOB I have because it's just so useful. Great videos! I like that you share practical knowledge and don't get caught up in the gear craze or the tactical ridiculousness many other channels have.

That orange (or yellow) safety vest is one of the most underrated items. I've seen people get past checkpoints at festivals and then get through the aftermath when the booze busses etc show up by explaining they are festival staff and need to get through...while high. No kidding. ...all about a hi viz vest. I've seen people enter and leave construction sites, events, protests, all sorts of situations. The ultimate gray man is invisible...because of societal blindness to the hi-vis factor. in those situations is the tradie, the construction worker, the parking valet at a concert, the shit cleaner at the superbowl.. the garbos...whatever. basically the unseen workers ALWAYS have to wear these vests. They become invisible, and so can we by utilising this info. Mind you...If you live in France right now choose carefully because yellow is a different story. All power to you if you believe in the Y vests but you will become a target, and that is the opposite points of this videos discussion.

Thank you for the detailed comment! Yes, I think there are a LOT of applications for having an orange safety vest. Putting one on immediately puts you into an "official" looking position, which could be a good thing for certain scenarios, even if you just use it to help with a community's evacuation.

I refer to hi vis safety wear as a modern urban camo. You'll be seen but it's so ubiquitous that no one is going to pay any attention to you, you'll just be dismissed as another tradie. Look like you belong and you're unlikely to be challenged. An actual shirt rather than vest can work better though the vest has the advantage of being quick to put on and take off. Of course if you're wearing the vest over a business suit that might get some attention but otherwise it'll get you less attention that someone in normal clothing.

The whole point behind "greyman" is to blend in. Not be noticed. It doesn't just mean "wearing grey clothes". They have to match what others wear in your environment. You've mastered this skill. Wearing items and brands that are "common for people to wear in Seattle" suits you perfectly. Great job!

Excellent. Your concept is on target well though out. I have a GI camouflage poncho I keep it with my web gear as camouflage will most likely draw to much attention from ether the police or the local hoodlums. If you have GI gear maybe you have something else worth stealing. Civilian gear may be more expensive but hoodlums may not know its value. So stealing it may not be an issue. The orange vest is a good add on it will allow you to be visible, also using it as a flag to wave could call for help. I’ve never use silk inner sock and everyone I’ve known that did got blisters. If you had better luck that’s great.

Well Cliff, I think you gave me more idea here. I would suggest having a flight suit and/or a camo suit (not ghillie suit) for using the effective camo in that terrain. I will also not suggest going fully grey. I like having maroon, seeder red, brown tan, navy blue, foliage green, and even khaki/coyote colored clothing. I also have clothing that has functionality. Like using the women's tights as a base layer and a swimming trunks as a underwear and a shorts. Simply using everyday items for bug out gear.

I have two bags, a summer bag and a winter bag, I always keep one in my car. The bags are Sea to Summit dry sacks, green for summer, white for winter, packed with seasonal clothing. The winter bag is a compression sack because it is bulkier.

TheUrbanPrepper I’m in Atlanta, the summers get hot and humid with massive thunderstorms. The winters get cold, wet and icy. One set of clothes year round won’t work. I like the dry sacks because I would likely have to deal with water. Besides being uncomfortable, wet clothes can get really heavy. I was inspired to color code my bags from your vids. So thank you. Your vids have given me many great ideas. I made a really cool pocket toolkit based on your Altoids tin design.

Great video. Very good items you selected. The ex officio underwear is the best there is. I also been using the people socks for the last 3-4 years. Only socks I wear. They last very long if you wash/dry them correctly. This year I used the merino wool buff and I must say it has replaced my beanie that I’ve been using. Same as the original buff but a heck a lot warmer. Keep the videos coming!

I love the format of this video and the pdf link. Makes it really easy to review and adapt to my needs. I would recommend replacing the exofficio with board shorts. This allows one to shed outer layer of pants without having to walk around in underwear. Over the past 7 years of using this system, I have found this system works great in spring, summer, early winter environments. Deep winter may have to go back to exofficio as board shorts don’t fit great under long underwear.

Nothing wrong with the black hat but I love that the Buff is not also black. A black face cover is just too loaded an item, much better is your grey one even in an industrial steel plate pattern. Your orange vest works with your more work uniform colors; it wouldn't look as natural in a city if it was over brighter hiking style colors.

I like the rain jacket that North Face offers. The main point is the armpits have zippers to let heat out. This helps for wearing your rain coat in the hotter months. Plus....I typical get hot under my arms if I’m walking and wearing a rain jacket.

for me to blend in i'd have to get all camo stuff, lol. i live in a suburban area with lots of trees and wooded areas; and some rural areas not too far away. so for me, i can go with camo and fit right in. there's lots of guys (and girls) around here who wear camo year-round. so i'd just look like everyone else at any other time.

Thank you, Adam! I would start by obtaining the primary gear first, store it in a laundry basket temporarily. As you are building up your supplies, try lifting the laundry basket to ensure that you can handle the weight. Once you have a good baseline at a reasonable weight, figure out what specific backpack would best server your needed. Hope this helps!

In order to waterproof your clothes, have you considered a 2 gallon ziplock bag? It looks like it just might be the right size to fit inside your purple bag.

If you want to change your sleeping bag to a multi-use item, try out the Helikon-Tex Swagman Roll. Check it out, it's basically an insulated poncho, but you can use it as a sleeping bag too! You can find it on Amazon.

Great video. One thought. If you are wearing your hi-vis vest for safety and wearing your backpack, you will lose the rearward safety value. Some reflective straps or a reflective panel would do the trick.

If your vest is big enough, you can put your vest over your pack. I used to wear my vest over my pack all the time when I rode a motorbike instead of putting reflective straps on my pack because it was easier

Actually depending on your urban environment, the military poncho may fit in fine as there are more people with those on the streets than high end rain wear.

Yeah. I think I'm going to include both just for options, since the poncho can also serve as Shelter. On normal days, wearing a Poncho would stick out a lot. Perhaps not in a Bug Out scenario. I hope I never have to use any of this stuff.

You mentioned that purple case isn't waterproof. I'd take steps to waterproof your clothes. It doesn't take much water making it's way inside your pack to make your clothes damp and that just sucks, especially if it's underwear. I'd either put stuff in individual zip lock bags or wrap your clothes individually in cling wrap. Both options are reusable and multipurpose but will stop most of the water getting in. I wouldn't put them underwater but it'll keep the rain out. I use cling wrap personally

If you're not going fully brandless/tagless, at least switch all of that Patagonia stuff and hats with Quechua, especially if you're in Europe. It's more affordable, practically the same quality (sometimes even more modular!), and way more discreet as either more people will be wearing them and you'll blend in, or fewer would pay attention to the brand because it's not as easily recognizable so they wouldn't know if it is pricey (therefore not making you a target) like big names. Remember people, capitalist fashion is something to avoid, no matter how useful it might look. There's always a more discreet, better alternative. THAT is what you want if you're TRULY not looking for excuses to get into trouble just to have a story to talk about. Everyone knows you don't walk into a really bad neighbourhood with a glittery gold Louis Vuitton suit. Wearing Patagonia or whatever at a time of survival is the exact same thing, everyone recognises that brand as something useful for those scenarios, and henceforth as something worth pettily fighting over for. The difference is that the world has become that bad neighborhood, and all of your clothes the glittery gold Louis Vuitton suit. Your gear is the real gold here, including the clothes on your back. Take care of them, and they'll take care of you.

Patagonia is far from gray man. I also live in seattle and you'd stick out anywhere but an amazon convention or lunch time downtown.. worn work boots, shitty dirty clothes, and an old jansport backpack would be more appropriate. Youd be a target wearing what you have on down in Westlake.

Spandex fabric treated with ever dry for hydrophobic and made into a dome tent with over lapping flap's for the entry way that is spread over an aluminum composit expending dome that folds out from a soft ball size into a dome you flip over so it want's to spring back the other way clip the lip with a paracord line then stretch the spandex treated with ever dry over the top for a two mam dome tent that fits in a small light wright pouch. 😊👍

Lycra spandex suit that can stretch over your clothing that has built in shoe's and head cover with a zipper up the back that has been fabric painted in urban woodland and desert and snow camouflage. Treated with ever dry That make's the fabric hydrophobic yet can still breathe. That is packed down into a small pouch.

The last thing you should do is bug out. Please for the love of god don’t leave the safety of your home unless you absolutely have to. I think you make good content but I think people are far to eager to bug out when 99% of the time staying right where you are is the best option.
