Justin Hickox - I would have the length at the bottom of my shoulder blades, cut straight across with light layers at the bottom. I like to air dry my hair, and my slight waves look much better at that length.

Okay - I am 60 with fine average amount of hair and a squarish-rectangular face. After watching the DIY haircutting blunt, layering, and bangs videos, I developed a hand cramp. It was from drawing diagrams of my head, hair, where to (and not to) cut, and taking mounds of notes while watching the videos. // After a few days of that, I cut my own hair (hand-cramp and all). // I love love love it! // I can still do the updo’s and don’t feel like I have to hide my hair in a pony tail when it is down. My husband likes that it is still longish, and likes the movement, and is happy that I love it! // Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

My hair is thinnest on top then I have stringy hair on the bottoms. I wish that they would start to integrate mannequins with thin or thinning hair patterns to give practice to stylists who may feel threatened by trying to make it look good. I notice that whenever a stylist did my hair it was never as good as when I did it. Bc they follow a typical protocol that is learned. It's not their fault. They truly don't teach them. The best tips I have, baby powder for Light hair, cocoa for dark (if you want) , dry shampoo, back combing. Blow dry by switching up upside down and hair being pulled straight up to the ceiling. Not to the side etc. Straight vertical hair as you dry. Hair rollers can create volume. Braids slept in can create volume with a natural wave. Etc.. If you have dark hair, you can also use tinted sprays to hide the scalp better (Baptiste dry shampoo ones are pretty good and cheaper than fibers like topic). With light hair the dark can also work towards the root to create a kind of gradient. If you don't like that effect, then skip that. I have yet to find a decent blonde spray. But also keeping the hair a lighter color works well too. Skinny hilights throughout.. Etc. As for cuts. Chin length to a lob is usually best. Long is possible but more upkeep. I hope this helped someone out there! And I'm not a stylist, I just have done tons of research and used myself as the test subject. :P I hope this helped some.

In my experience I have had to explain to most hairdressers why fine/ thin hair has to be handled differently. Also, I have had a few hairdressers "shame" my fine hair as if it is defective, thus absolving them of responsibility for not knowing the best approach when cutting/ styling fine/thin hair.
@SusanCallHutchison2 жыл бұрын
Ooh! My favorite tip was to keep everything below the temples unlayered, and to layer the top. I HATE cuts that make my long hair look "scraggly." YOU SOLVED my need for volume on top and around the face while keeping the length and fullness at the ends.
@tastx3142 Жыл бұрын
I have found that a blunt cut bob just below chin length makes my hair look thicker. People are surprised that when I make a ponytail, the diameter is about the diameter of a pencil so I use children’s bands. The issue is that many stylists don’t seem to understand that a slight undercut will help the hair curve under a bit and it looks thicker. Another problem is that I look better with bangs, but want them in a slight arch a bit longer on the sides. I also want them textured so that they are a little softer. As a woman in her 60’s I don’t want straight, blunt bangs like children have. I have them cut them a bit longer as I can fix them at home. If they do it correctly, I will have them cut it the length I want and give extra tip. One stylist cut my hair for years which always kept it’s shape between cuts but he had MS and couldn’t work anymore. I have had my hair cut different lengths that were visible from the front, chunks not cut the same length and bangs cut badly. I wouldn’t even want someone to try and layer or do anything differently since my hair is so thin and fine, every scissor cut is noticed. Even if they aren’t busy, they seem to think, quick and easy, 15-20 minutes and don’t bother to verify the length. I will politely notice problems but they get annoyed and it looks worse. I have stayed quiet and had my husband even it up as he will take time and has a better eye. Women tell me they are happy with their hair but the coloring is poorly done and the hairstyle isn’t flattering. I gave up about 15 years ago. Maybe they think that older people don’t care about their hair but I sure miss my long time stylist as I always got compliments on my hair. I do now get compliments on the color, which is uncolored, but never the cut.

I actually texted my hairdresser today and asked to be her first client when they reopen! Lol Great tips, my hair is fine and a lot of hairdressers sort of dismiss the idea of ever being able to style it like it’s just some awful lost cause

My hair has always been thin and fine and now that I’m 58 , it’s even thinner, especially right in front on the top. During the pandemic I grew out a soft pixie. Didn’t leave my house for ages and just kept it in a ponytail to wait it out. My hair grows really fast, so it was past my shoulders until earlier this morning when I finally got it cut. I now have a blunt cut sitting right at the collar bone with a full curtain of straight bangs cut right above the eyebrows. It definitely makes me look younger! I dye my hair a bright copper and I’m enjoying that with the new length. I have to admit, there are things I really loved about having short hair, but after 8 years with different variations of a pixie, it was time for a change. :)

Great analysis of the specific issues with fine hair! You are the FIRST hairdresser I have encountered who understands that cutting the crown too SHORT creates a flat space beneath!!! I always hear that I need to shorten the top layers to create volume but this NEVER works with my fine hair and results in the FLAT spot you described. Now, if only I could communicate this to my hairdresser. Sadly, I don’t think a move to Portland is in the cards.

I also have very fine, soft hair with no natural texture. For years I used perms, but they did a number on my hair. About 2 1/2 years ago, I started a grow out, no more perms, no heat tools (except lightly blow drying the roots while hanging my head upside down,) no products except a thickening shampoo and leave-in conditioner on the ends. I have cowlicks on each side of my high forehead, not quite making a widow's peak, but close. The hair there, especially on one side, wants to lay straight back. After 2 1/2 years of regularly trimming just the ends, my hair is finally HEALTHY for the first time in my life, and is nearly to my waist. I usually wash every other day, blow drying the roots upside down for lift, and to help control the third cowlick on the back left side of my crown. I feel good about my hair on those days! By day 2, though, it's limp and flat again! I don't call my hair "thin" except for those areas you pointed out above each side of the forehead. (People, THIN deals with how MANY hairs are on your head. FINE deals with the THICKNESS of each strand of hair.) But my hair is so fine and soft that on a windy day, my long hair floats around my head like dandelion fluff! It is almost time to take the plunge for a style. I'm 52, with a round face, an inherited "turkey wattle" chin/throat area, (thanks Granny!) and I'm developing a jowly jawline. I have a family member who finished beauty school this past summer, and has her own chair in a nice shop. I'm terrified to trust her with my challenges! If you have any words of wisdom for my unique head of hair, I'm all ears! I would love to not have to use styling products. I loved the feel of my hair without them.

Imho with my thin fine longer hair, the second day after a wash is always my chance to get volume by lifting and using powder dry shampoo 2-3 inches from mid top of scalp. Just rubbing under the top layer with my fingers allows the lift necessary to add wider height. Then I smooth over top.

Some of these commenters may not have a lot of hair like what you had to work with at the time, buuuttt I can tell you one thing that a lot of these commenters DO have in common with this dummy.... ah... never mind LOL Like he said in the intro people, pay more attention to his technique and not necessarily what he’s working with. Try it on yourself and if it works, great! Are y’all even listening? If not then why even make a comment 🤦♀️ Great video, thanks for the pointers!

Yes, many prolly didn’t hear the initial auditory but they did see the visual. They are already concerned about their own hair being fine and even perhaps thinning. Don’t think they needed your rude comment supported by the individual who is suppose to be “helping”. If the “helper” had used an appropriate “dummy” there’d have been no need to indicate the viewers should ignore the full mop of hair he’s using and learn anyway.

@@maddym9508 hi Maddy, unfortunately there’s no such thing as a dummy with thin or super fine hair. It was either this dummy or no video.

Enjoyed your video. I have fine and thinning, curly/wavy hair. I have been afraid to get layers but always felt that I needed some volume on top and not sure what to do. Now I have a better idea of what to ask for next time I get a cut. Thanks!

SB I have the same type of hair as you. I would love to flat iron my hair but because my hair strands are so fine, the heat really wrecks havoc on these strands. I would love tips on how to style and control my hair type.

Just seeing this video now; really need this as my hair is pretty much see-through at the ends! Question for Justin or anyone else: how would the recommended styles change if hair is wavy/curly? Mine is type 2A on top, 2B-C underneath.
@justinhickox3 жыл бұрын
Great question! The foundation of the styles would be basically the same. Meaning the tips I share are the same. The major difference is that since curly hair has a tendency to have a bit more volume (think fluff), SOMETIMES, it requires/can handle a tiny bit more layering to remove that volume if that makes sense. I really need to do a video about that. Hope that helps a bit.

my hair is VERY fine, but I have a lot of it. It's also thinning on top as I age. It's so thin, wearing it down is annoying, because it gets in my face, sticks to my face/lipstick, etc. but it's just easier to wear it long and pull it back into a ponytail (every day). Any tips for me?

I just cut my own hair at home. I want longer hair but needed to sheer off some damaged bleached spots so it'll grow out a bit nicer. I think I'm between the short and medium spectrum. The front part of my hair I wanna grow out the most seems to be the most damaged, but that's how it goes XD thank you great video.

Hi Justin, I've got Scottish hair. It's thin but I've got two hairs coming out of each folical, so there is a lot of hair. Plus it's frizzy. Any suggestions please.
@justinhickox4 жыл бұрын
Layers and a flat iron. Sounds crazy but the layers will help to create shape and allow you to build volume where it's supposed to be for the cut, then the flat iron can still create bend and volume but will smooth the frizz down and make it look more polished.

5:50 That hiccup you mentioned is the bane of my hair life! I’d tell people I can’t have layers in the front and they’d say they weren’t putting many layers in and bam, the dreaded gap (or hiccup as you say) in the front returns nonetheless. I hear what you are saying about going with some more face-framing layers in the front to cut out some of that thinness back to a stronger line where the hair has a fuller baseline. I’m scared of the very word “layer “ but I might try this with my next hair cut, probably going back to chin length bob with some lift in the very back. Nervous the gap will return! But I definitely don’t have a strong enough baseline in the front with my lob right now, so I’ve gotta do something 🫣. Really appreciate your education on fine hair!

This was great and explained so much but when I go to my stylist I am still not sure what to ask for. I always take pictures but usually end up with something different and thin looking. I am 64 years, have a one length bob with bangs and need some face framing layers. My hair is currently touching my shoulders but prefer chin length. What are the words I need to ask? Long layers? Face framing wispy but not too thin? Light texturizing, no texturizing? They always cut too much!
@justinhickox4 жыл бұрын
Those are great questions. It depends on your hair to be honest. Depending on how fine/thin it is, you may want it cut blunt on the ends instead of texturized. I’d actually need to see your hair specifically to be able to say for sure.

Hi Justin, love your videos! I’m 60 and have a longer face and very fine thin hair. I want a chin length Bob but My stylist says I can’t because I have a very long hairline in the back and can only go to my hairline or I have to shave up the back. Is there a way to taper the back with a long hairline in order to have it shorter in the front?

Hi Justin - I have fine wavy hair. I also growing out to natural color. The gray hair is much straighter. This is creating a problem - too wavy to be dead straight and not curly enough to have air-dried wavy curls that are even (bits curl, others dont). I was trying to keep up my curly girl method, air dried routine - but as more gray comes in I think I’m going to have to give up. Based on the medium length shape you showed, would this also work for fine “wavy-ish” hair? I’m trying to figure out what to do next! My current stylist is curly specialist - with dry cutting. Is your bob achievable with this method of cutting - or do I need to find a different stylist?
@justinhickox4 жыл бұрын
Hey Pauline! That’s a great question. I believe you could achieve it with dry cutting. Honestly, on curly hair I typically cut it wet then many times I even dry it straight just to make sure I get the bulk out of it correctly and everything is blended and the lines are strong where they need to be. Then it’s dried curly. That may sound crazy but it’s my preferred method for shapes like this. I think many stylists go back and forth on the wet vs dry cut with curls. If your stylist is solid with dry, I’m sure they’ll do a great job, I’d if they think they need to wet it down for this, I’d imagine (hope) they’d just say so. Can’t wait to hear how it turns out!

Hey Shelly! Honestly, I’m all about helping clients out and I fully understand the situation everyone’s currently in. Im happy to share how to trim your hair at home but I honestly wouldn’t know where to start with a shape like that. There’s quite a bit that goes into the layering etc to get that shape to be solid. It’s a (all the little things add up) situation. Sorry I can’t help more!

I am going to get that last cut when salons open back up. Believe it will be wonderful with my fine hair plus the shorter length will be great for the hot humid summer in N.C.
