That last part hits me hard. I lived for a good part of my entire life not knowing if I was going to wake up the next day and multiple times I almost didn't. I know people that didn't make it and some I failed to save. I livid in Alaska and the power would would go out in the middle of winter as it was -40*F and wind ripped trees down all the time. I moved away just a few weeks ago but I am still not used to feeling safe as I rest. It hurts but yet feels amazing to not have to worry anymore about freezing to death or having to check up on another just to find them dead in bed by having frozen to death. I am scarred yet hopeful of what is to come. I have laid too many to rest. I didn't think I would have to explain wood stoves and how they work to people as a back up heating source but I forgot that I am communicating with people and most don't actually know about Alaska or wood stoves. Let me explain. Many houses have fire places as the main or a back up heat source but remember not all places have them and the places that do needs people to operate them. Here are the steps to get the fire place started. 1 You need to have, during the summer, stocked up on chopped wood and have them properly stored. 2 You must realize that the heat went out at some point in time. 3 Make a fire in the fireplace. This is what usually happens but as I pointed out in the first paragraph they are usually found in bed. As they are asleep they are unable properly react to the situation and the cold gets to them. Most of the time the cold wakes them up but to wake up to the cold it requires you to be in good heath and properly fed. Horrible things happen without warning. Just because people know better doesn't mean that things don't happen. If people can properly react then nothing happens but if people don't then they die even if they know what to do like in 2021 in Texas were over 200 people died from a winter storm. Remember I also stated that I would check up on other people. I have only found a few people dead in bed from the cold and they were, all but one person, elderly people who were not in the best of health. The 20 year old that I found dead had taken medicine to help him sleep. Unfortunately it cause him to never wake up again. Stuff happens and we just got to move forward,

Yeah... But then again it still depends on the individual/organization. Just like how there is “Scientific Revisionist” and “Radical Purifiers” in Vanaran society, Humanity is not a monolith of all consuming cruelty. Even in our time there are people who dedicate their whole life for other organism wellbeing, receiving nothing in return but only a sense of fulfillment. Also the humans that made contact are hundreds/millions of years into the future, their mindset might be different than in our age.

So this is how Humanities 'Forever War' starts. Whoever did what they did to the narrator's species is for a world of hurt. As the one species that needs no hibernation just a few hours of sleep is mad and we decided they are our next prey to be hunted into extinction. It's not like we haven't done it before. Just ask any Sabertooth Tiger or Dire Wolf. Oh, right. We hunted the Sabertooth into oblivion and turned the Dire Wolfs into our pets. @Munchkin.Of.Pern09 Жыл бұрын
Modern dogs are descended from the same ancestors as grey wolves. More recent genetic evidence suggests that dire wolves weren’t actually wolves, ie did not belong to the genus Canis; instead, they belonged to the extinct genus Aenocyon, and covergently evolved to look and act similar to Canis species because they were somewhat related and filled the same niches.

Funny little thing, this isn't hibernation, it's torpor. Hibernation isn't nonstop sleep, it's just excessive inactivity. Hibernating bears wake up all the time to reposition themselves, sometimes head out to look around for something to eat. Some leftover berries or a dead carcass or whatever. Torpor is when an animal enters a death-like state for an extended period of time, like what tardigrades can do.

ok but here is the thing, pre 1940's agricultural standards held that we got an 800% return in callories for the callories we expended in agricultural work. (both human and animal) (now we run a small defecit of a couple percent but we expend mostly cheap callories for a much greater amount of produce per unit of land. and even so we are not expending anything, just mining for minerals we use for farming, which then just enter the cycle themselves. that is not to say there are no issues with this As timothy Mitchell pointed out the western world has completely wrecked substainable agricultural practices in Africa (focussing mostly on Egypt) and our modern systems are devestating for natural ecosystems and species, especially riverine ecosystems and dependent terestrial ecosystems when it comes to Africa. But we can in fact produce more food than we could ever know what to do with should we wish for it, hell we could design new cities where all the rooftops would be greenhouses , the bottom section could be mushroom farms and we could even design defacto thoughtless animals (even give them massive evergrowing cancerous harvestable growths) to provide food with the waste of the former two. If Saudi Arabia wasn't obsessed with Skyphalusses and their "neom" BS they could have built a massive underground cityscape cooled with pressure desalination filling massive basins in and around this city and powered by the pressure of the water itsself wanting to reach the lowest point (but mostly solar power). the water surplus could then be used to create a literal oases around the city and irrigation pipes could expand this gradually. It would still need maintenance, there are no easy solutions but it stands to reason that this is a scaleable system, more people means more such cities or expansion of them, underground infrastructure once built should be low maintenance as it should be built for the ages from the start, (thick metal cables, (roman)concrete, polymers, glass,...) humanity really isn't running out of resources, our biggest issue today is resource monopolisation, land, housing, "means of production"
