This reminds me of Unreal Tournament, a multiplayer shooter game from 20 years ago. The game had a rocket launcher as one of its usable weapons, and the rockets' model had a flat tip, on which the texture was a smiley face. You'd only see it if you took a rocket straight to the face, but the first time it happened to me, I laughed for 3 minutes straight.

@@willparry530 sounds logical..due to how long range high tech exploring also sounds pragmatic to favor relative small crews as they arent ment to do any military actions outside of potentially having a stronger bite then civilian ships and extra redundancy to discourage short sighted opportunism actions from individuals while a dedicated warship likely have an even worse bite but also the manpower to endure prolonged direct combat or to exploit opportunism to take/occupy assets of vaule

Either surrender or retreat. Retreat would be better, to get out of the jamming range and get the info to HQ so that they could prepare. Information is important, and without getting the info back home, they would be caught unaware. Though, that would only be prolonging things.

Three ways I see this going: if that general has a fighting response, or doesn’t change from his freeze response, they die. If he has a flight response, they might live long enough to get reorganized. Third way, if he has a fight response that his brain interprets as needing to act, not to fight, he might be able to talk himself out of it, but humanity is very pissed off.

@@Sanquinity There is 0 chance we go to war over 5 dead people. If they captured all the info we will know this was a standard procedure for them and while highly aggressive would not be instant war. We would probably contact them much faster (no idea time frames involved but guessing close to a year) and we would do it in a way that they would recognize us. I would even argue that they should use the main ship with a number of escorts. Return the ship to them as a sign of good will and establish relations.

Great stuff It's rare for an HFY to truly achieve that horror/"alien" (the movie) feel where we're truly intimidating. I never thought about it, but the whole description as "bipeds" and how it's written makes it unsettling. I guess that's how some other species might really look at us. And the old trope of predator front-facing eyes is done well there too

The smartest thing he could do is form up the fleet in a defensive posture if he can and send out a general message for parlay or ceasefire. Granted, with broad spectrum signal jamming in effect, they'll need to coordinate all this with local directional comms like laser transmitters and the like. That's the standard theme in r/HFY: humans are apex predators in a galaxy filled with prey species that managed to survive their own predators. That and Earth is a hellscape compared to other inhabited worlds. It's why Deathworlders is often considered as an exemplar of the HFY genre.

Sadly most HFY stories are one-shots. Writing a short story like this is orders of magnitude easier than writing a whole series. For one thing, constructing a believable galactic society where humans are scary monsters is difficult. Not as big an issue for a short. I mean, seriously, why are these herd creatures playing at being fierce anyway? And why are they so freaking bad at it after all this time? At least Deathworlders tries to answer those questions.

The thing is about this story is that the Terran Alliance fleet could be... anything. It could be a diplomatic peace mission or the opening strike of a war. But we don't know because we don't know because we don't know what the Terran Alliance is like. This future humanity could be a peace loving civilization that realizes a few lives in a bad first contact isn't worth killing millions over, especially when it's clear who has the military and technological advantage. Or the Terran Alliance could be ruled by a despotic regime that needs a "quick victorious war" to distract their public from their own mismanagement of government, and the Federation just made themselves the Alliance's punching bag. But then, the Terrans aren't really the point of this story. The point of this story that bad policy leads to bad results, and the story could have worked just as well if the Federation was a human nation that had attacked a more advanced alien ship.

Pro tip: when you show up with peaceful intent, you don't open with jamming communications in the area. That's a clear declaration that hostilities have already begun, and all communication will be conducted via weapons from that point. There's no other reasonable interpretation.

The aliens started this, we're finishing it, because if they did it once they might well do it again. And there's no indication the humans here are being genocidal either. The alliance moniker implies some level of restraint, I'd be more worried if they called themselves an Empire. Plus, there's no reason to spare even one person if you intend to kill everyone, they would have just let the captain stay missing like the rest of the ship and crew.

@@willparry530 It is not. If a vehicle crossed the border, it can and should be rightfully seized and personnel apprehended. Then you start the talks. Aliens weren't particularly smart about it either, but we don't start wars over such shit, unless we were looking for a reason to start one.

It means neither ship knew where the other came from. But the fact is this was outside BOTH nations' borders. Seizure and search in _international_ territory is illegal.

Does this sound like backstory fanfiction on the First Contact war from Mass Effect lore? I mean, if the aliens were specifically said to be tourians, that would fit perfectly. I mean, from what I've heard, those first few human space navy ships were able to fight the much larger and more advanced tourian fleets to a standstill before the Council stepped in and forced a ceasefire.

By my guess, what they attacked was most likely an advanced recon team. In a small, lightly armed frigate. 10 personnel who's mandate it to scout distant territories ahead of the main force. These are also most likely, Special Forces, with various specializations needed for deep reconnaissance. Special Forces are not usually heavily armed, but rather rely on stealth and the element of surprise and tactical awareness. They're a scalpel, whereas regular Army are a hammer. Hence how they took a ship of 500. The ships that entered the xeno's space, was probably a carrier group. A supercarrier with attached air wing, destroyers, cruisers, submarines (or in scifi, stealth ships possibly) and a supply ship. In other words, the xenos are fucked.

Well since they were able to decode and translate your ship's database I would make every attempt at parlay. Before the fleet arrives send your fastest ship out of there to advise the Federation of your situation and that you are attempting diplomacy. For a General, he isnt very clever. The moment he recognized the Symbol, he should have send an all-Frequency message towards the Terrans Ships "We apologize. It was our Fault, we understand that. Please, let us talk before you do anything." But wow. About 500 Crewmember, taken out by 5 Humans. Either you Guys are fragile as a cooked Noodle or you accidentily attacked a SpecOps Ship. Also, if such a "tiny" ship (we dont have the sizes in an understable metric), is packed as a Ship half as big as your FLAGSHIP, you dont really have a military, do you? With 10 People on Board and so much firepower, it was probably a Scoutship. Knowing our Species, with 10 humans, it must have been the aquivalent of a dutch Caravan XD every Space utilized to the max, ready for a fun trip.
