The first radio waves were sent by the nazi's. It would be hilarious if they had been traveling all this way and finally get her and land and they say " Seig Heil, take me to Hitler". We will have a lot of explaining to do.

I hope their transmission to the humans starts with Sabotan's "The Christmas Truce" 1) Humans are guaranteed to understand it. 2) It clearly signals friendly intent. 3) It shows they are somewhat familiar with and respectful of human culture. 4) It's awesome.

Wasn't there a species in Babylon 5 that got TV from the 90s, and loved the daytime soaps? They paid a lot to human diplomats to get copies done of the 'Days of our lives' episodes they missed because of interference of the signal. They never found out who shot JR for decades.

I have been a fairly big B5 fan since it came out and I do not remember that. But Given show runner JMS's sense of humor (HE SPACED THE BEAR) I would Not put it past the show and I have just forgotten about it over the years. Or maybe it was in one of their blooper reel's.

I think I've seen this story so I'll ask again what I asked then: how the hell did these people think Earth was only 96 lightyears away from them rather than 200+? Signal strength aside, said signals would only be coming from one star system, so even at a couple hundred lightyears, you should be able to tell what direction the signals are coming from, which means you can find the source start system by either a) drawing a line straight to it, or b) draw TWO lines straight to it and see where they intersect. Even if only one system is receiving the signals, this civilization has starships; outfit one with receivers like the narrator's station and move it to a neighboring system to get parallax viewpoints. Also? If you're 200 lightyears from Earth, you're INSIDE the Orion Arm!
@DeHerg
@DeHerg Жыл бұрын
Also really weird that these aliens are completely unable to simply backtrack the signal. Even if you assume the signal is too weak to triangulate via signal strength. You could still do it by signal timing(what GPS does). We have missiles that do this and these guys can't strap 3 sensors on a single ship?

@@themanformerlyknownascomme777 Not a problem; it's better to side with quality over quantity. TBH, your Muse did a major dump on you and digging out from under it will take time. (I should know, I did an insert to a 'one shot', got the author's blessing and am still assembling the 'universe' for it...simple things are rarely simple, nor easy.)
@smaragdwolf1
@smaragdwolf1 Жыл бұрын
@@ironwolfF1 there are roughly 2 Ways to write a story. From the inside out or from the outside in. Either you build the Story and try to build the world around it or your build the World first and then write the story as part of this World. Both has positive and negative aspects. Writing the story is faster, but you will struggle to build the world around it. Building the World first is alot more complex and time consuming, but the Stories written in this World will feel fantastic. I think the Lord of the Rings Universe is obviously a prime example for the latter.

iirc, some of the first consistently transmitted 'code' was for spectrum/commodore and other tape era basic computers. a lot of those games, due to system limitations, were ship/tank/infantry combat simulations... against aliens. hfy story: aliens recieve transmitted code, they manage to translate it to a working program, and see a simple 'defensive simulation' featuring their own race, their subordinates, and their mothership, defeated by a single tank.

@@themanformerlyknownascomme777 Honestly, that would cause even worse issues. If the radio signals they're picking up are even 960 years old, what's been happening on Earth that whole time?
@themanformerlyknownascomme777
@themanformerlyknownascomme777 11 ай бұрын
@nickdumas2495 well that was kinda the whole idea. The story was partially inspired by a documentary I saw that showed a distant planet and mentioned that if the planet had sentinet life and radios that they would be able to listen to the 1930s Olympics, obviously technology has advanced a whole lot since the 1930s. So the whole idea was that while they've been listenting humanity has been far more technologically advanced.

@@themanformerlyknownascomme777 Well, you'd expect that in 1000 years the FTL solution would have been found, and humans would be everywhere. If you take the presumption that somehow it wasn't, and instead some alien just recently stumbled into Sol and got nommed by some ridiculous antimatter powered nanotech humans, who now suddenly have FTL drives to combine with their nanoforges and are curbstomping the assholes, that would be a stretch of a scientific blindspot but work fine yeah :D
