Different flavors of attack just like ice and fire sociopaths are cold uncaring and with no moral qualms of wrong and right. While psychopaths are a more emotional raging entity that reacts on emotion and lacks empathy which will lead to a more instinctual response.

Not so much suicide as stuff like blood not circulating, muscles refusing to move, or the conscious mind falling into apathy. Like a coma while awake.

So the psychic aliens could be registering the raw unfiltered chaotic data that chemical can produce because our brains have natural limiters that actively attack the chemical and break it down before anything substantial can be viewed or happen. what he saw was all the trauma, all the anxiety, the drepression, the darkest fears...and worse... what feelings we're going through his mind on a daily basis. He managed to get well after 2 cycles in the med bay, but develped a nasty form of psychic paralysis, commonly known to the humans as PTSD, what didn't occur to him at that moment, was that the human he initiated contact with, was one of the "kind hearted" ones of the species ( records show that this saying means in their language that he was well adjusted with his mind and he is one of the safest to initiate contact with), then he learned a horrbile truth that almost made him spirral into madness, there were worse humans, 100 degrees of magnitude worse, and then, there were, the mentally ill, the pedos, the molesters, the criminals.

I would imagine that humans could probably be rendered safe for psychic contact with the application of certain pharmaceutical interventions. Perhaps MDMA (although I imagine things might get kinda freaky in other ways for a xeno trying to psychically probe a human who's high on ecstasy)? Maybe large doses of THC?
