Notice that it was the collapse of economies that prompted the decision to unilaterally take full control of the war. Despute our long and sordid history with inventive ways to murder each other... humans seem to be happiest when we can form trade deals and pet the space critters. So as entire empires saw their economies contract, buckle, and then collapse that pushed humanity into a moment of "damnit, you're effing without friends. We just want to buy amd sell things." And we destroyed them. And got back to commerce. Honestly how much do you want to bet humanity turned it's considerable inventiveness and all that war energy on recovery from the destruction we had caused? Cleaning up worlds that weren't outright vaporized etc. Putting all that genetic and robotic discovery to use fixing habitats and curing disease. It would be very like us to need to undo the necessary damage to decisively win that war forever and make sure anyone else thinking about whacking our friends thought long and hard about it. Aside from the systems we sent nova, how long do you think it took us to reterraform them, clean them up, improve things even and hand them back over to those races.

Thanks for doing justice to another of my stories mate! Always nice to hear you lend a strong voice to words best said with one. And yes, for those who remember the name Grox it IS from Spore, but I didn't know that while writing it. The name was bugging me but I just assumed I'd used the species before like I did with the Lelligar. So yeah unintentional reference there :P I do quite love Sleeping Giant style stories, but I wanted to put a spin on it where humans became these horrors of war that went far beyond what "civilised war" should be in the galaxies eyes. I was tempted to do a follow up story describing the aftermath but I'm not great at sequels and tend to prefer my stories stand on their own.

Allow me to share one of my favorite quotes from a book that had a bunch of aliens try to invade earth only for not only the army invading them to be massacred but a code released that had every ship that species ever made self destruct: “What sort of creature would do a thing like that? Kill an entire army when peace is still on the table? What sort of species would even conceive such a notion, wiping out their enemy without prudence or partiality? It’s the same one that fell upon your people the moment they landed. A species born of war and conflict, with millenia to hone their skills and the darkest parts of their souls. You would shrivel in disgust to know what we have done to each other, for crimes no greater than a hue of skin or a place of birth. What did you think would be waiting for monstrous invaders such as yourselves? (Character turns to face camera that is broadcasting to the entire known universe) My advice earlier was genuine. It is indeed prudent not to start a war with the galaxy’s most dangerous species. Only, the Wrexwren are not the holders of that title. They are a simple, brute force: effective at their own tasks, yet inherently limited by their own rules. No, the true danger would be creatures capable of planning, deception, and untold death, all wi the out a moment’s pause. An imagination that can conceive of such terrible ideas, the sort no decent species would consider, let alone put into use. Being who can justify any atrocity, so long as they come out on top. Meet humanity: the most twisted, murderous, foul species in the entire cosmos. We are the ones you should have avoided conflict with. Now, you get to be a warning for the rest of the galaxy, a tale to tell over whatever the alien versions of campfires are. The once mighty Wrexwren, destroyed by one simple, poor decision: they decided to fuck with Earth.”

One thing I dislike about these sort of HFY stories is that they often miss some crucial points. Yes, humans are capable of immense destruction, but we're also capable of more than enough compassion that as a whole we would reject such an immense scale of atrocity. More to the point however, we're also frugal with that destruction. When we perform an act of extreme brutality, we do it just once or twice, in a way that will instantaneously demonstrate to not only our current enemy but also potential future enemies just how dangerous we can be. There's no need to level an entire nation, just crush a few cities so quickly, so completely, so far beyond the nation's capacity to stop it, that they have to recognize the folly of continuing conflict. Humans can and will commit great atrocities, yes, but we know how to use a scalpel to greater effect than any sledgehammer.
@guardianofthetoasters2323

I disagree. If there is an interstellar nation that would allow the murder entire species (considering only 50+ remained from the original 120+) we would probably pummel it into submission. Not to mention the lost of human life, I think we would be less lenient at that point

@@guardianofthetoasters2323 We'd certainly fight them, and we'd fight hard, but looking at our history we generally wouldn't launch biological weapons or WMDs on near the sort of scale described here. What's described here is a kid throwing knives around all willy-nilly with no regard as to when it hits a villain and when it hits an innocent, or how many knives were wasted in the process. We typically aim more to a better degree of precision, choosing when and how to strike to get the greatest amount of impact from the smallest amount of effort and loss. In the cases where we do go more intense, it's typically due to tactics specifically designed to make it difficult to impossible to avoid alternatives, like mixing civilian and military locations so thoroughly that you can't attack the latter without crushing the former. I'm not saying we wouldn't thoroughly crush an enemy like that, it's just that we know how to be more efficient at it.

Ŵe already have stories like that. I want to see some genocide obliteration horror stories. This is what i like. If anything, this isnt quite cruel enough for my taste.

To be fair the Grox had apparently genocided several worlds worth of people, trillions if not quadrillions of lives extinguished out of sheer hatred for all life other than their own race. Over half of the various races of the galaxy were brought to extinction by the Grox. So humanity brought down the hammer of retribution on the Grox deciding that, for the sake of the galactic civilization, they couldn’t be allowed to exist and wiped them out entirely by any horrific means necessary. TL;DR humanity saw what the Grox were doing and had a flashback to the horrors of Nazi Germany and gave the Grox a collective middle finger in the form of every war crime in the Geneva Convention and made some new ones.

This was a pretty friendly galaxy. Didnt really make humanity feel threatened and allowed it to expand and emigrate galaxy wide peacefully. That is, until a Stellaris crisis wide event occurs and humanity decided to open up a galactic sized can of whoop ass.

9:23 that's not how black holes work. If you make a star into a black hole, the orbits of the planets and everything in the system will be uneffected. The only thing it will do is cause all of the planets to freeze over.
@Sanquinity
@Sanquinity Жыл бұрын
Yea too many people seem te think black holes are some kind of space vacuum sucking everything in. They're not. Newly formed ones are objects with the same gravity as what the star had (minus the mass of the expelled outer layers), only concentrated in a very small area. Older ones are the same + added gravity from whatever other matter it managed to make fall inside of it. So yea, if anything, planets around the star would move further outwards or even leave orbit entirely.

Yes but only in terms of gravitational changes. The act of collapsing a star, literally overcoming neutron degeneracy amd creating a singularity... that unleashes enough energy that a supernova actually outshines its entire host galaxy for several weeks to months. Do you know what that level of radiation does to a planetary system? And any planetary systems within about 150 to 300 lightyears? It sterilizes them. Down to the core. It's own system will be blasted by the actual outer layers of the star being blown apart and forming a planetary nebula a few lightyears in size. Million degree clouds of plasma with masses in the trillions of tons utterly wrecking planets as they blow past at significant fractions of the speed of light. Heating the interstellar medium itself to the point where it literally glows in UV, xray and gamma wavelengths for DECADES just to balance out the energy unleashed. Yeah, gravity won't change... but there is nothing alive for next next several billion years within that star system. And a solid chance the planets themselves were completely vaporized by a blast wave thay can not be imagined.

I once derailed a TPK. My party had just finished a near deadly encounter and we were beat up. We go into this farmhouse to rest & recover. Our DM, being a cheating bastard, had about four shadows attack our party. Earlier we fought another STR draining monster & I had bearly enough strength to lift my weapon (this will Be apparent later). I the first to be hit and my STR was lowered to where I couldn't even left my weapon. Well a few rounds go by and the number of shadows grows by one as one party member was killed. While waiting for my turn I reviewed the spells I had available and found one that made me smile. When it came my turn I said, "I'm going to shed a little light on the subject." The DM started to go on to the next player I repeated what I said a second time. One of the other players began to chuckled as he relised what I said. Annoyed I said, "I am casting light." I remember the look of shock on his face as he realized the tables had turned as with that spell as it took away all the advantages the mosters had. My party slew the monsters. The DM was robed of a TPK with one spell
