That’s something about warfare that usually isn’t taken into consideration before it’s too late, and usually not at all considered by the average civilian.

The jack of all but master of none is often better than the master of one.
@n7honeybadger103

The original phrase is actually "jack of all trades, master of one". The idea was that a man that was only somewhat capable of doing a lot of things but didn't have any expertise on something was just as useless as a specialist that couldn't fill multiple rolls. An example would be a plumber that fixes his own vehicles and does his own home repairs.

@@n7honeybadger103Actually no, you've probably heard "jack of all trades, master of none" but the _original_ quote is "A Jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one". The comment, while paraphrased, is closer to the original text than yours.

While that may be the case, I fucking love stories where the MC is only good at one thing, and terrible at everything else. But they've honed that one skill past the absolute limit

@Nico-zf4pi this was actually a lie originating on 4chan from what I remember, because “Jack of All Trades, Master of None” is a phrase originating around the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, and has no earlier documentation, whereas the extended version doesn’t appear until the advent of the internet. Figured I should mention the real history of the quote.

Maybe ! But as the Persian empire learned to its sorrow,sometimes high tech pays ! Bamboo shields and reed arrows, were a little more than annoyances to the heavy Greek infantry. On the other hand, Greek slingers had a field day with the minimally armoured Imperial conscripts. War is chaos . You never know how things will turn out.
@korinogaro
@korinogaro Жыл бұрын
Cool but as story tells it wasn't "bamboo vs steel" it was ship that could destroy enemy ship but could not survive open and prolonged exchange of fire vs more advanced ship. It was more of "I don't need gun strong enough to evaporate you, I need gun strong enough to simply kill you".

The story also implies that the aliens held the idea that battle was a direct fight and that retreat, stealth, and deception weren't valid tactics in war because they relied purely on their physical strength. Humans, however, knew guile can be a big factor in winning wars, especially if your enemy doesn't use it in battle.

just had a funny idea: if you want a break from the HFY stories you can probably find a _lot_ of stuff on royal road in the same general genre without nearly so stagnant a community. it would definitely be a great place to go for when you're looking for longform stories at the very least...might have more difficulty getting in contact with authors to get permission though. the one that sparked the idea is a story called "Past The Redline" fits in quite well with the general theme here but falls into nearly none of the standard pitfalls...short version of the difference is that the author does not rely on making everything _else_ worse when trying to make [The Human] awesome. come to think of it "Noblebright" by the same author might be another good option but I haven't read much of that one yet to say for sure.

A lot of royal road authors are selling their stories on/ partnered with Amazon, so that could be a massive copyright issue
@evernewb2073
@evernewb2073 Жыл бұрын
@@sanguinesmile10z62 definitely if done at the same time, don't most of them take the story down from RR as it is posted on amazon? standard model is to be self-publishing what amounts to a rough draft and then go over it and do editing and whatnot after they finally finish the story and market _that_ version. in the case of the ones Amazon gets it's claws into that usually involves taking down the original, specifics as to whether that distinction matters would be up to whatever deal they have with amazon...hopefully not to many of them give amazon exclusive because the authors usually get basically nothing out of this but I would not be surprised if that is the norm. ...I don't actually know enough about how youtube handles stuff like that to know if it would be a problem, dang. ^I'm assuming it would be hard to stay on top of removing them himself when that happens _and_ that amazon would be exactly as assholish as every other "publishing company" happily taking advantage of consequence-free no-oversight power to just straight up automate making copyright claims via weaponized search engine, what I _don't_ know anything about is how youtube would treat that internally because they seem to be pretty damned inconsistent on that matter, basically he would barely care about getting a takedown notice or claim against a video a year or two after it was up beyond the annoyance of how bullshit that situation is in general but he would _absolutely_ care if the suggestion algorithm started blocking him out as a result of amazon grabbing his videos which is exactly what youtube is utterly inconsistent about.

NO! 6:15 the one thing you never skimp on is logistics infrastructure. transporting people can be lax but you NEED to be able to ship good reliably. that's literally the main cause of the current economic issues plaguing our world.

I think the implication is that the humans are doing it cheaper as in " you don't need to pay for a Globe Master when all you need in a bush plane". Humanity's providing smaller courier services to compete with large scale shipping.
