It didn't matter what they named the system, I could tell it was a red herring kind of bait as soon as the terran ambassador said it was vital. You never claim something is vital in a negotiation. Unless you want the other side to seize on it.

Yep, a simple but classic misdirect. 'We want X' 'Well, since you want it so much we do too.' 'Fine, you can have X but only if we can have Y'. *They really wanted Y all along but knew they'd play this game with whatever they said they wanted.*
