Great narrative. I plan to walk the Lenox Crater Trail next time. Lots of outdoor places to drive to within 75 miles radius of Flagstaff, for those who like to hike or photography or Dark Sky. Besides the Grand Canyon.. The America the Beautiful pass is best value along with my local state park past. That should cover most road stops destinations but local ative charges their separate fees... Fees for everything these days....

SP Crater. I'm going to all three of these awesome spots at the end of May.

I still remember visiting there in 1970. We could actually hike to the top of Sunset Crater. Wasn't a difficult hike for a 4th grader. The lava was black back then. ✌️

On our first big road trip back in the summer of 2011 to the Grand Canyon, we visited Sunset Crater. I don't have any pictures from our visit. This is a nice presentation of the area 😊

National Parks are mostly created by political will😅 Arizona has like 20 National Monuments and they’re just as stunning. I’d recommend Canyon De Chelly, Chiricahua National Monument and Wilderness area, Organ Pipe Cactus, Vermillion Cliffs and many more. Some state parks or wilderness areas are just as stunning too like Lost Dutchman, Salt River Canyon(almost looks like the Grand Canyon), Oak Creek Canyon and many more! Arizona is truly stunning. Also, Monument Valley Tribal Park is in Arizona(Not Utah lol.. I have no idea how people mess this up). It’s the Navajo nation equivalent of a National Park.

SP crater. Heavily studied by geologists- including me. Do I get a gold star? I'll give you a gold star if you know what SP stands for!! It is kind of funny. You might have to dig a bit to find out. I visited this park and was disappointed I could not hike Sunset Crater. I would have liked the O'Leary trail, but I didn't do enough homework, so I didn't know about it. I will have to get back there. Flagstaff is great place to stay.

Correct! And hahaha I am well aware of what SP stands for-was half the fun in posing this trivia question. Highly recommend coming back, lots to see!

A far better place to stay is historic Cameron Trading Post. Be sure to try the delicious Navajo Taco and check out the views of the Little Colorado River in the backyard. Flagstaff is fun, but Cameron is far more interesting!

We're going here for the first time this fall. BTW, it's Ah-Ay, not Ah-Ah. It's actually Hawaiin and it describes the type of lava (ʻAʻā translates into “stony rough lava”; Pāhoehoe means “smooth, unbroken lava”). Thanks!
