I have made the decision to have my son learn from home. His public school has him set for virtual. It's too fast paced, so I think homeschool will be much better for him. During our quarantine I taught him with sidewalk chalk or tossing numbers in the pool to grab the answer. We identified plants, trees, and tested river waters, identified fish species :) He learned more in those 2 months than the past 2 years. But, like you, beyond 4th grade math, I'm terrified. lol. I appreciate all the resources. I'm committed now, I need a plan.

I'm so grateful to parents like you who share their wealth of knowledge. This my first year homeschooling 4 kids and I was a complete wreck! Your videos gave me hope and confidence that I CAN do this. I think I'm like 70% comfortable with the thought of homeschooling my kiddos...well besides my one child. She is non verbal,autistic and very developmentally delayed. She is almost 9 but has the mentality of a 3 to 4 year old. I guess I will cross that bridge when I get there. If there are any special needs parents out there that can recommend anything I'd love to hear what works for your family. Much Aloha Janice

I'm doing My Father's World Kindergarten, also planning to supplement 'All About Reading' (thanks for your input on this decision!!), but I'm still searching for a Math curriculum to add in as well. (He's already completed a year of private school Kinder, so MFW will be much too 'gentle' for him) Teaching Textbooks sounds great, but do you recommend anything for the K-3 years? I'm looking into Abeka and Horizon, but both seem to be in the 'advanced' categories and move rather quickly so I'm concerned about the future years. I'd appreciate any input :)

Well, that's a hard one and something we struggled with, too! We did Math U See and Masterbook's "Math for a Living Education" until my youngest was ready for Teaching Textbooks. I like the manipulative-based concept of Math U See but other than that, I didn't enjoy it. If you can find it used, it would be worth a shot! On a positive side, my youngest was ready for TT Level 3 when she was in 2nd grade so you don't have too much longer to wait until your child is ready for TT.

These are curriculums but how do you know if the work they are doing is accredited? If your child is going to college what do they submit as creditable work that they have done from k to 12th grade? How do you know the work they are doing is work that will be recognized by colleges/universities and even jobs? This is my only concern.
@aplacetonest3 жыл бұрын
Most homeschool curricula isn't accredited. You will need to keep a transcript for your child's classes, grades and credit hours. Your child will also need to take the ACT/SAT. Those are the things that colleges look for so I wouldn't worry about things not being accredited. As a high-schooler, my daughter has been taking college classes and the curriculum we've used has never been an issue. :)

@rayneblood25044 жыл бұрын

I completely agree with the comments. The first thing is to check the laws in your state. Once you know what they are, you'll have a better idea of what you're expected to teach and what documents you're required to keep. If your state doesn't require any certain curriculum, the fun of researching begins. If you find it easier you can purchase "box curriculum" which is everything you'll need to teach a certain grade. The problem with that is you'll lose any freedom to choose curriculum based on your child's learning style and how you might prefer to teach certain subjects. We've never done that but I know box curriculum works for a lot of families. I prefer an eclectic style where I pick and choose which company we use for each subject. It takes a bit more research to do it that way but for us, it works out better for my kids and for myself.
@beckygeer64803 жыл бұрын
I have heard/read that Teaching Textbooks is actually a grade level behind. Have you found this ?
@aplacetonest3 жыл бұрын
I haven't found that to be the case. The program was actually designed backwards. They started at the older levels and worked their way backwards to make sure they covered all concepts. I've used TT with a child who was in public school and then started homeschooling and I didn't notice any gaps for her. My youngest has always used TT and I've found it to be appropriate for her as well. Of course, other people might have a different experience with it but that's the case in our homeschool. I will say, my oldest is a junior in high school and is working through Geometry and I feel that's in line with what most public high-schoolers do.

Is there anything similar yo BJU that is secular? The state is paying so they won't pay for anything religious. My daughter is 7 going into 2nd grade she is an excellent reader, it is pretty rare she doesn't know or figure out a word. Do you think we need to do All about reading? Thank you so so much.

They have placements tests on their website that your son can take that will help you determine which level to start him in. :)

is every level not the same price for TT 3.0? We just started level 4 this year and I plan to have my youngest start level 3 next year when my oldest is doing level 5 at that point. we switched from MUS and we are impressed so far.
@aplacetonest4 жыл бұрын
I think the upper levels, like high school, might be a bit more but the lower levels should be the same or about the same.

We are going to do Masterbooks next year. I would love to try All About Reading with the Language Arts from MB. Would it be too much to use both? Or are they completely different subjects?
@aplacetonest4 жыл бұрын
I haven't used Masterbooks for language arts so I'm not sure but I wouldn't think so since All About Reading is only a reading program and doesn't involve any writing or grammar.

Hi I'm starting homeschool this year 7th grader...do I have to register with a program or private school? How many hours of homeschooling needed
@aplacetonest4 жыл бұрын
Every state is different with their homeschooling laws and requirements. You will need to contact your local board of education to find out what they require.

Around what age would you begin grammar and writing?
@aplacetonest2 жыл бұрын
We started grammar and writing, very loosely, in 1st grade. I recommend "First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind" for the very early years.

How long does a typical BJU day take? I’m wanting to use a curriculum that doesn’t tie up our whole day. Also I’m wanting a curriculum that incorporates Christian aspects into each subject if that’s even possible 😂
@aplacetonest4 жыл бұрын
BJU is Christian-based so I think you'll like that but the lesson length depends on the age and day. We don't solely use BJU for all of our subjects but on average, I'd say a typical lesson takes about 20 minutes for younger grades.
@whatashleyfancies54803 жыл бұрын
This may be late but in case someone else is looking. I do BJU Distance for first grade all subjects except science/history. The core videos for younger grades are usually up to 30 mins but videos like spelling, science, history and Handwriting are around 10-15 mins. We take lots of breaks our day starts at 9am- and is done around 1230.

So do you use different curriculum's to complete all the classes required ?
@aplacetonest4 жыл бұрын
Yes, we do because we are what you would call "eclectic" homeschoolers. We don't use the same company's curriculum for each subject but you definitely can if you prefer to do it that way.

@@MrsMimi-hn5ft I have an 8 year old, 3 year old and a 5 month. My oldest is in 3rd grade this year. I would love to home school, we had so much fun last year (after we got used to it) the first few weeks were tough. I am thinking of doing the 180 Days of schooling and buying the books from Amazon? I am not sure.
@MrsMimi-hn5ft4 жыл бұрын
@@erikad6932 For us during this year's Spring public online schooling my 8 & 6 yr old complained & voiced their boredom. It appeared monotonous without much room for their own interests. I realize the schools might have scrambled to put work together then. Teachers tried their best with what they could. Trying to bring that setting into our home didn't come without frustrations. Once school let out this summer we dove into maps; continents, countries states and capitals. It was fun for them to ID presidents and flags. We can't stop now! They enjoyed DK workbooks off Amazon. Researching others. My fear is/was? them falling behind. But honestly it might happen in general with this whole situation. I feel that if I am a step ahead with preparing materials and staying abreast of requirements that won't he an issue. If we are gonna do it, this is the year. I wont do the same for my high schooler though who's lready on a computer based program. Fortunately for homebased our state is one of the least restrictive. Hopefully yours too!

It really depends on each day but my youngest is online maybe 1-2 hours and my oldest 2-3. I have them alternate their online subjects so they aren't staring at a screen constantly.
