Internet homeschool is a great way to advance your career, while working a regular job in the workforce, all at the same time, without losing time fighting traffic in an automobile, to go to school out in public. The really large major cities, are one good example, where it might even be safer to go to online internet college, because of the high crime out in public.

Thanks. This was really helpful. I'm starting homeschooling in February with my 4th grader (i'm in Australia and we just finished school- our new school year starts in Feb). I'm in the prices of choosing curriculum. We've got the 4th grade the good and the beautiful that she's trying out over or summer break cos she can't wait to get started. But i did buy a language Arts program from master books, plus a world history and geography program. My dad is a teacher and recently retired so he's going to be doing science and a few other bits with her which is great. I've decided to use singapore math, but i haven't bought anything yet as I'm not sure what level to buy. She's very advanced (she's 7.5 and about to start 4th grade) and was very bored in school especially with math. So I'm figuring that out. Absolutely no idea what I'm doing for Australian history and geography, health, and technology which are all required each year. Plus a language. I've got 6 weeks to figure it all out. It's quite exciting but very daunting too! I also have a 5year old about to start kinder, but I'm leaving her in public school for the year while i spend some time with my oldest as her mental health is a mess from being bored and frustrated for so long. I'm looking forward to challenging her - and learning a lot myself!
@aplacetonest6 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have a lot to figure out in the next 6 weeks but you're right, it is very exciting! I love picking out homeschool curriculum and I'm sure you'll make the best decisions on what to use. Just remember, if you buy a curriculum and it doesn't work, don't be afraid to change it. Obviously you want to give things a decent try but if you or your child hate it and are only getting more frustrated, it might be time to change it to something else and that's ok. I wish you the best of luck!

She’s only in pre-k at the moment but when we get to K-1st grade I wasn’t sure what to go with or how to start teaching her to read. I pulled my oldest out of public school just after 2nd grade so she knew how to read, but she was forced to read books for some stupid quota all the kids had to reach by the end of the year or risk being held back and now I’m stuck trying to get her to love reading again :(

Chey.Wilkerson oooohhh. My son was in public school and had the same issue. Idk what curriculum you use but I let me son read at a slow pace and find books he wanted. There are quite a few that give you options for scheduling like The Good and the Beautiful's language arts program and Apologia's science program. You can make most curriculum work for you by playing around with how many lessons you would need to complete each week in order to finish the program in a school year.

I am currently homeschooling my 7th grader. I love your homeschool videos and I'm so thankful for your recommendations. I spent way too much money on textbooks and curriculum this year and it is so difficult that we both end up completely frustrated! What would you recommend for science and history for 7th grade?
@aplacetonest6 жыл бұрын
I hate when that happens but sometimes you just have to cut your losses, sell it and choose something else. Some companies even have return policies and they may allow you to return it. For science in 7th grade, we used Apologia. We have a variety of their books and while I don't like it, my oldest daughter did so we stuck with it. I personally think it's boring and way too wordy! I've heard good things about Bob Jones and Abeka for science so maybe those would work better for you. History is another hard one. We've hopped around so many times with history programs and I really don't have a good answer for you. Again though, we are seriously looking into Bob Jones for history. I'm using their English program with my 3rd grader and we love it so I'm assuming their other subjects would be great, too! They aren't cheap though...that's the only downfall.

@@aplacetonest Thank you so much for taking the time to send a reply. We checked put Teaching Textbooks today for PreAlgebra and my son loved the sample lessons so we went ahead and purchased that. We were using Math in Focus and it was a lot of reading and little fun. My younger boys are in public school but my 3rd grader has asked to homeschool next year as well. My youngest is in 1st grade special ed exclusion and he thrives so I will leave him there. What advice do you have for splitting your time between 2 kids versus one. My 7th grader does not work well on his own and has ADHD where my 3rd grader does well on his own however I domt want him to feel like he isnt getting equal instructional time. I guess it is just a trial by error learning process like anything else. Thanks again for posting a variety of videos. You and Kim form The Wads are my favorite KZbin channels esp bc you both are hard working mommas. :)
@aplacetonest6 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness, Teaching Textbooks is the best! I hope you and your son continue to love it! Having two kids to homeschool takes a bit of planning but it can be done! You just have to organize your time so that when you're working with one child, the other is doing their independent work. Then when they're done, you switch. As your 7th grader gets older and more independent, it will get much easier. My 9th grader does almost everything independently and it's pretty awesome! To get your 7th grader to work better on his own, you might want to start small in having him work independently because it's something he's going to have to get used to for high school and college. I love Kim and her energy! Isn't she hilarious?!

When I was at school here in uk we had to watch and read of mice and men. And it was part of our GCSE in English literature. Now I understand why the story was how it was and understood why the ending had to end how it did. I didn’t like the story, the ending although I knew it couldn’t happen any other way but it kind of disturbed me a little. I have never wanted to watch or read the book again. That is why I think it’s good that home schoolers can choose their reading material so they don’t have to deal with these things.

@aplacetonest4 жыл бұрын
That’s true, most programs aren’t accredited and the ones that are aren’t very inexpensive. What’s your main reason for wanting accredited...so your child will receive a diploma? If so, it’s really not much of an issue in my opinion. Colleges pay more attention to ACT/SAT scores and grades. I hope that puts your mind at ease.

@aplacetonest6 жыл бұрын
Well, I've never used TGATB for the younger Language Arts units but I have heard great things about it. I was really tempted to switch from AAR to TGATB, too but AAR was working well for us and I didn't want to take a chance on messing that up by switching to something new that we may or may not like as well.

For History we are doing The Good and the Beautiful and for Science we are doing a combination of The Good and the Beautiful's Science units and Daily Warm-Ups: Science. I think I'll switch back to Evan Moor Daily Science for the days that we don't have time to do a lesson with TGATB.

You have said in this about what you use for maths and reading. Could you do another video on giving some tips for other subjects like science, art, RE etc. This was very interesting. Although I went to school I struggled with maths and did a program Calle kumon maths (here in uk) where we (me and my brother) had maths papers to do every day and once a week we would go to the place where the people would mark our weekly papers. Every so often when we had completed the grade we would do a test then go onto the next grade. Through out the year at special times everyone would be given sticker count down charts where every day you would stick a sticker on the card to count down and at the end you would get a prize. Also for completing things you would get prizes. Whitchurch encourages us to do well. Although me and my bro weren’t the biggest fans we are thankful for out parents giving us the opportunity to do kumon as it helped us get better grades than we would have otherwise gotten. Kipumon also do English.

Thanks so much! We used to use First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind but after the middle of 2nd grade, we stopped that and started using Bob Jones English 3. We are loving that curriculum and it includes grammar and writing so you wouldn't need to separate programs for those subjects.

A Place to Nest thank you. As you get up in the AAR levels can the child do the lesson on their own with parent overseeing? Do/did you use All About Spelling? If so, how did you do both AAR and AAS and how much time on each? If not, which did you use?
@aplacetonest5 жыл бұрын
No, AAR can never really be done independently. We did use AAS for awhile but stopped because, at the time, my daughter was still in the early stages of learning to read and I personally felt that AAR and AAS were too overwhelming. AAS requires a lot of memorization of spelling rules and at that age, I just felt it was too much. When we were doing both, each subject would take about 20-30 minutes, depending on if she had any required reading in that lesson. Now we use Spectrum Spelling which is very much a traditional spelling program where you just have to remember how to spell the words. I hope that helps! :)

Yes, I picked out and paid for everything myself. With your son being in a charter school, I suppose you're fairly limited in what you're able to use. Well, that all depends on your state's requirements but in general, I would keep it pretty light and fun. @aplacetonest4 жыл бұрын
I would definitely say eclectic since I like to pick and choose the curriculum for each subject.

@@aplacetonest ooh cool, I was thinking of doing unschooling for everything except math - traditional??? Although I still have to do more research!!

Do you have any suggestions for Math level 1 and 2?
@aplacetonest5 жыл бұрын
We did Math U See and a Masterbooks math workbook to "get by" until my daughter was old enough for Teaching Textbooks. Thankfully, she was ready for TT's Math 3 by the middle of 2nd grade. :)

@@aplacetonest Thank you! We are currently doing TGATB level K math and language arts. We love the language arts but I would like to find a more traditional math alternative next year.
@aplacetonest5 жыл бұрын
I'm sure there are others to try but those are the only ones we used. Of the two, I prefer the Masterbooks one because it's real-world math that uses manipulatives like Math U See does.

I'm surprised you didn't include Story of the World.

We don't use Story of the World any longer although we did love it for several years. :)

I know you use The Good and The Beautiful and I was wondering which curriculm you think is better at teaching your child to read. The Good and The Beautiful or All About Reading? I am currently using Level K of TGATB and I was wondering if I should switch to All About Reading.
@aplacetonest6 жыл бұрын
I haven't ever used the elementary L.A. from TGATB. I've only used their science units for elementary and the high school L.A. curriculum so I can't speak to their reading program but we've had great success with AAR. It seems neat that TGATB rolls reading, grammar, writing, etc., all into one curriculum but for me, I liked that AAR was a dedicated reading program. That's just my opinion, having never used TGATB for reading.

Is teaching textbooks math the new math?
@aplacetonest4 жыл бұрын
No, it’s traditional math.

What would you recommend for a first time homeschool mom who is starting their 3 year old in homeschool preschool.
@aplacetonest6 жыл бұрын
I would keep it fun and playful. For Pre-k we did a lot of the Leapfrog learning DVD's, Confessions of a Homeschooler's "Letter of the Week" curriculum and Handwriting without Tears. The main thing is to make it fun. I hope that helps!

What do your girls do when they are finished with school? Other than electronics 😁
@aplacetonest6 жыл бұрын
They do several chores each day. They both also have a lesson each week, one takes dance and the other takes piano, and they have a special church activity one night a week. Other than that, they both like to draw and play Minecraft.

Have you tried abeka? If you have what's your opinion on it compared to others?

My oldest did Abeka for one year for science but I didn’t ever use it with her so I can’t say. I’ve heard good things about it though.

Have you tried Evan Moor? Daily launguage , reading comprehension. Editing..etc... I was thinking of purchasing it because im pulli g daughter out of k12 due to hours in front of a computer and other reasons. But its broken down daily M-F... So seems easy. But i am checking out the good and the beautiful . Thanks appreciate you, Tawni She is 6th grade. Sorry one last thing ixl.com? Its math and launguage. Do you know anything about it?
@aplacetonest6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I use a lot of Evan Moor workbooks and we enjoy those. I also like IXL but I've never paid for the full membership. I just use the free lessons but it seems like a very fun way to practice lots of different concepts. Education.com has a fun game center called Brainzy that's fun as well.

So is Evan Moor good enough to get started on or so I need it as a suppliment? Because since I'm so freaked out on knowing how to do the good and the beautiful maybe I should get the Evan Moor books that are super straight forward. What do you think??? Again THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for taking the time to RESPOND!!!

Is the good and the beautiful simple and straight foward? Like do this and do that...?
@ivandbrot98316 жыл бұрын
@@aplacetonest i hope I'm not driving you nuts lol..The reason I like Evan-Moor is because I can get five different books in language and they are M-F,telling my daughter what to do. you know, two pages in each book or 1 lesson in each book daily. Is that how the good and the Beautiful operates too? Do they give me like three or four different books and workbooks and all I have to do is just tell her do two pages Out of This Book 2 pages of that book read this chapter answer questions... I really need to make a choice here soon and purchase her curriculum before the end of winter break. Thank you so much and I appreciate you.
@aplacetonest6 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about The Good and the Beautiful's Language Arts curriculum or their science curriculum? The science curriculum is designed to be done together with you, the teacher, reading the lesson and the child doing any coordinating worksheets. It's not really a curriculum that you hand to the student and have them do it on their own. For Language Arts, it would be a bit easier to have your child do that independently but in 6th grade, she might still need some help from you.

I still don't get why math is an issue to most people... It's the easiest subject
@greatdanelegend70014 жыл бұрын
Some people click with it and some don't. For a lot of others it has something to do with how it's taught. Public school tends to take the fun out of it really quickly, unless you luck out and get a really great teacher
