One of the easiest ways to hold the feathers of the hoof out of the way is to cut the toe off an old sock and slip the hoof into the toeless sock. I’ve used this method for many years and it works beautifully. Btw, that is a beautiful Paint horse.

In over 50 years around horses, working with many breeds, I’ve never seen the ergots grown out that huge. When the farrier was cutting the chunks off the hind feet - sticking out of the back off the leg, sticking out through the feathers - by the hoof that is called the ergot. Chestnuts I’ve seen get big, I soften them up with Vaseline or baby oil & you can finger peel those off in a couple of days. The frog & chestnuts are absolute treats for dogs & a high majority of folks who have horses, have dogs & dogs love when the farrier comes for a visit - that means it is treat time! I did have concern for the guy making this clip, there is no way you can move as quick as a horse can kick, horses don’t need an excuse to kick & there is no footage worth getting your face rearrange for a good shot. JMHO

You should NEVER allow dogs to eat those. Whilst some dogs might eat horse hooves regularly with no issue, it is generally recommended that they do not eat hooves. Eating horse hooves can cause gastrointestinal distress, vomiting and even seizures. It is safer to stick to treats that you know are clean and will not splinter or break apart when digested.

Marge Littleboy, can you explain what "ergots" and "chestnuts" are? I've never seen them before and don't know what the anatomy is that would cause these odd growths. The ones up on the legs--are those like humans getting calluses on their hands and feet? Or are they some other pressure / irritation related growth? And the ones down at the hooves--are those just like snaggly growths of toenail from the residual evolution of going from three toes down to one, or like cats and dogs with high, useless dew-claws? I know Wikipedia and The Google could give me some explanation, but I'd really love to hear from someone who knows about these things first hand, with real-life experience of horses.

Being a horsewomen myself, I love watching the TLC this mount is getting. It baffles me, however, that the irgots and chestnuts aren't tended to regularly by it's owner. It doesn't take bit some grooming to realize these things need to be trimmed down. Using nippers to have to remove these is great but shouldn't have to be done. Glad this magnificent beast got his/her spa day. Greetings from Utah.

But it's not. Horse people are taught to NEVER wear steel toed boots/shoes where I live around horses because what happens is the horse can stomp down or put enough weight to bend the steel and you can't "unbend it" so people have had amputations before due to steel toes. They are made for factory work where you may drop something heavy on your foot. It is better to have a broken toe(s) you can put in braces to fix than to have the toes cut off because the horse crushed the steel in the boots. You learn to hold the feet between your legs and with the back feet you have more control as you can hold it out so they can't kick you. Never steel toe boots around horses or risk losing your toes.

What were those things you were cutting off the back of the leg of the horse it was sticking out like a little horn or something what is it called and why does it form?
@PanAshEquine
@PanAshEquine Жыл бұрын
These are called ergots. They are a type of callous. They are of the same material as the chestnut higher up on the leg. It’s a natural part of the horse anatomy. It doesn’t hurt to trim them. In some climates you can peel the chestnuts and ergots off but because it is a desert climate we have to get them trimmed every so often because they grow back. Hope this helps!

Pretty girl had some cement feet, didn't she? For horses living in such dry areas, is it recommended to put some sort of oil on their hooves to help keep them from cracking? I've never owned a horse, so I haven't a clue if that's a thing.

Hi! Thank you for your question! Yes that is a thing. Our farrier recommends that we use Effol Hoof Ointment and Fiebing’s Hoof Dressing when their feet dry out.

What are they and why does the horse get them? Do all horses get them?
@PanAshEquine
@PanAshEquine 2 жыл бұрын
They are called chestnuts (upper leg) and ergots (closer to hoof) which are callosities on the body of a horse supposedly coming from the eohippus an early ancestor of the modern horse thought to have lived around 60 million years ago. Also nobody really knows what their use was/is! All equine breeds get them except zebras and asses.
