@@La0bouchere the problem is how many times does forced euthanasia have to be a thing before it's *far* too many. I get your point, but saying it's optional, as people are basically bullied into it, is in no way good enough. you shouldn't be going to a doctor to die, and having it even on the table in such a manner as canada does, is a failure of the medical system (yes, i know it has been a thing well before the program made it more prevalent, but that there is even a program for it now shows the negative direction that canadian healthcare is headed).

@spacejunk2186 before the World Wars, there were 4 branches of medicine. Osteopathy, naturopathy, and homeopathy had different approaches from allopathy, but allopathy laid claim to "science" by means of its use of chemical formulations. This ideological monopoly became a legal one in time, and ultimately this led to the expensive, decade-long certification track. With all those costs and all the range of things you have to know, the number of facts you can independently verify goes down and the number of things you have to accept as given by your hospital/regulatory agencies/pharma reps goes up. All this to say, the problem's not only in Germany.

Looking into the woman in the Simons "ad" breaks my heart for a very specific reason, because when I found out she had Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), I instantly knew one thing; she shouldn't have died. I know this, because I am about her age - 33 - and I too have EDS. And not just any EDS, but the rarest and most extensive form of it. At last check it's estimated that only 3 or 4 people have the same condition as me in my country (the UK), with a number thought to be in the low tens throughout the world. It is not a very understood condition even though recently things have improved. I have lived a life of going to see "specialists" only for me to be the one informing them. Help has been difficult to come across because the healthcare professionals simply do not know what to offer. I say all of this because I know how she felt, and even so, at no point have I ever reached a point where death would be something I would consider, nor thankfully have I ever been prompted to. EDS is a condition that effects things like your connective tissues, causing ligaments to elasticate, skin to be stretchy (the most common symptom in more widely known lesser cases of EDS), dislocations, and can effect things right down to the quality of your tooth enamel. I have all of this and much, much more, all due to the EDS, but is is a very, very live-able condition. Canada should be absolutely ashamed that they offered this young woman the option to die, not because of the suffering from her condition, but because of the suffering caused unnecessarily by their negligence. I am only thankful that here in the UK such a thing doesn't happen. I truly do wish I could have spoken to her before she made her "choice", because her life did not have to end, it shouldn't have ended, and I can only hope that no one else with EDS is railroaded down this same path of no return.

She would eat and drink water, but unless we kept her comfortable she would clearly show signs of distress. So my dad and I took her to the vet, they gave her a sedative so she'd go to sleep before they put her down... and that was that. She didn't even resist the sedative which she so often would. Wherein they would be able to push MAID even more onto people, and when the person becomes angry at basically being told to kill themselves, the medical "professionals" can declare harassment or abuse, having care denied to the person, leaving MAID as their only available option left. I'd do myself with a gun if denied help killing myself while wasting away from terminal cancer. Everything is not a slippery slope that can never be stopped with clear boundaries. It isn't morally wrong to allow the terminally ill and suffering to end it earlier if they so wish.

Seems silly to oppose something because it was implemented poorly. You also won't have a good idea of how bad it is to not let people off themselves unless you read about all the people who die slowly in horrible pain because suicide is illegal. Read about what the last weeks of life are like with ALS and see if you actually think its good to make others go through that.

I would be very curious as to the demographics which opt for MAID. I also find it amusing that while our government complains that we are too expensive to keep alive, they are willing to waste millions looking for 4 dead prostitues in a landfill, in the middle of winter, when they may not be there and definitely will not be found.

They're only willing to dig through that landfill because it became a high profile case. They originally told everyone involved that it wasn't going to happen. Like when the RCMP recently said they didn't want to be involved in a case of someone "leaking" forged RCMP documents to local muslim groups that made it look like said groups were being spied on as suspected terrorists cells. The day after that statement was front page news, they pulled a complete 180: Now they're very interested.

I think it says a lot about a society when it fails so completely to protect its most vulnerable members. And with all due respect to Ms. Li, while she has now come to the light, she is still a murderer. There's not even any grey zone there like there is with abortion. If a friend said they wanted to die and I provided them with the gun, you'd bet I'd be charged with their death. The whole Canadian health system needs to be shut down and rebooted. It's FUBAR.

I can (probably) give more context as to why the gov decided this. Souce: guy I talked to at a wedding who says he works in finance Lots of doctors are retiring not enough new ones are taking their place, less and less ppl training to become doctors/specalist The ones who do train here often flee to the states to make 1.5-2x what they can make here, alot of specialist work salary meaning they get paid the same no matter how much or little they work so they work 2-4 days a week. Conclusion. Canada health care system is so backed up that appointments for basic shit are weeks to months wait. Hell, when I wanted someone to look at my inner ear thats a year wait at minimum. So rather then say pay docs more or encourage doc training, the gov would rather off people But again info comes from guy at a wedding but it makes sense

It's not just pay issues: lots of people in medical school can't find work in a teaching hospital because it's such a bottleneck. 90% of otherwise qualified medical professionals cannot complete their education here for that reason. If you go to another country to complete your education, even first world European countries with the same standards, you apparently do not qualify to practice here. And the expansion of medical infrastructure doesn't seem to take immigration policy into account. The whole system is a trainwreck, top to bottom.

Indeed. I knew she was right back then. The death panels were an obvious and natural consequence of a government health care system. Heck private individuals have them when they have to decide if they can continue to treat their family members. The difference is that your family members care about you, but your just a number roses government body. What i didn’t predict, though in hindsight it was the same obvious pathway, is the government talking people into killing themselves,

This is extremely dangerous to those suffering from bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or other similar conditions. I have family members that have this and they will occasionally get into seasonal episodes that could last months where they want to kill themselves and come across as lucid and sane. Often when they wake up from that down phase, the last thing they want is to die and can even forget that they even pondered it. If family caretakers can't protect someone from hurting themselves without it being illegal, that's really going backwards as a society into the dark ages.

Ehlers-Danlos? So, connective tissue disorder. Unless she had the rare type where it affects the heartstrings or similar it's a pretty easily managed condition. Most who have it just have a mild form where there can be issues with scarring or such, or have to take care of their tendons and are at greater risk of arthritis. To hear she was pushed into killing herself over this is utterly vile and could be held up as a solid reason for abolishing Canada as an independent nation.
