Best Interior Detailing Tricks: Leather and Plastics

This is a filthy Honda Accord which is perfect to demonstrate 3 different approaches to leather cleaning. The 3 techniques are "options" that might work for whatever car (based on condition, age, material, etc) you are working with. These are simply techniques, options, or "suggestions" of how I would ASSESS the current condition, then TEST each approach on the material. Please use caution on any interior surface when your restoring its condition. (In this case, its modern leather)
I hope this is a helpful discussion for everyone to see how leather and most plastics might be cleaned. (in this particularly bad scenario)

AMMO NYC Great videos I have learned a lot from and from Chemical Guys I do not feel like either of you is better than the other. For further info, never never use steam if you have ventilated or perforated seat covers. that leather has about 70 microns of paint lacquer on it and the pores are about as covered as they can get, so no amount of heat will 'open' them.

You are correct, modern leather utilizes a thin synthetic coating on the surface of the leather to help protect it. Leather conditioner is equally fruitless. It might add a little sheen These are, but as far as penetrating "into" the leather and actully moisturizing or reconditioning? N0T so much ... ... these are secrets that they don't want you to know, so that they can sell more expensive care products.

I'll let the cat out of the bag. Use warm water in a spray bottle with a couple fluid ounces of laundry detergent and it works the same. This is a ph balanced detergent too.

Hey Larry thank you for this video. I used the brush and lather technique on my 10 month old Honda Pilot and it worked out great. The leather looks almost new again. All I used was a very soft bristle brush and an eco friendly neutral Ph detergent solution I made myself. Really appreciate this video. Best on KZbin for cleaning leather imo.

Can you do a video on how to clean leather from a 2002-2006 F150 king Ranch. The leather on those king Ranch is different I don't think it comes with a protective layer from factory. I've seen many videos on leather cleaning and conditioning but have yet to see one done on a king Ranch 2002-2006 model .

Yes use Lexol conditioner. It's difficult to beat that one in the world today. Make sure to shampoo your leather with plenty of water first to loosen any dirt and wipe off. Then use Lexol conditioner and don't wipe off.

I got a 2004 chevy 2500hd, it was an old work truck given to me by my grandfather. he does masonry work and the entire truck is covered in brick dust, and other crap. I tried wiping it down with a cloth and windex and got most it off but when it dries, some of that white reappears on the dash and door panels. any suggestions on what to buy and use to clean?

if you're talking exterior, clay bar works wonders. interior, youll probably wanna steam and agitate with cleaner.

I bought a truck that was also ex-masonry. I had to take a tire brush and scrub the shit out of the plastic on the dash to get the white dust to go away. It didn't leave any visible scratches since it was a textured plastic. I just used water, it was a lot of work. Spray, scrub, wipe...repeat.

Simply find a shoe polish,the paste type that closely matches the leathers color. So if you've ever polished a shoe/boot,then you know the very simple polishing deal. you'll have to go to a shoe repair shop or 5, to find an assortment of colors

Car leather is often better than the leather used on household furniture - the leather in cars has been treated to resist Ultra Violet and Infra red degrading and is generally painted better too. If you have really good leather conditioner, you can use it without worry.

+Ari Cohen Best product to keep your leather interior looking new, smelling new, like new condition....King Ranch Leather Conditioner (It's made for premium saddle leather). Smells awesome and can be purchased either online @ King Ranch website or I buy mine at the local Ford Dealership (Parts Dept....no shipping to pay this way). Apply small amount of KR conditioner to microfiber chamois, fold and work into fiber of cloth, then wipe everything down (if seats are perforated, wipe solid portions first, then do perforated portions last ...with residue of conditioner on cloth...if this stuff is too heavy on rag and gets into perforated holes its hard to get out, so you just want to swipe over them last after excess conditioner is out of chamois). You can also wipe your dash/doors/etc. with this too (light coat). You'll LOVE this stuff....My son found out about this product when he purchased his King Ranch F250 Truck (premium leather interior). I use it inside my Toyota 4Runner (all leather), and also on our premium leather living room furniture ....it's awesome, and it smells soooo good! Can't believer your Ford Dealership didn't tell you about this.....

Multiple applications of leather moisturizer over time. Apply, let it soak in, apply again, let it soak in. keep doing that until you see it's no longer absorbing then wipe excess away. Thanks for watching

I've used an Ozone3 machine in cars with cigarette smoke damage before. Works really well. Leave it in there over night with everything closed up and it breaks down the smoke on a molecular level and you have a brand new interior smell afterwards. Just an option.. thought id share after reading your question. :)

Good video but I think your missing one more step. See when you spray your soapy cleaner or chemical cleaner. By wiping it dry, you still have that soapy residue left in the leather fibers which after time will soak up the oils in leather. U can put conditioner on it but your still going to have the residue. This is what I do, get a clean Microfiber and wet it with cool water, ring out and wipe that soapy residue up. Then a dry cloth to wipe it dry and there you go. Think of leather as your own skin. Would you take a shower without rinsing off the soap ?

BadRonald1 That leather is in a Honda. Most likely it is not true leather but a Vinyl Leather. with true leather you would use saddle soap, and a small amount of wax and water. This is much different.

robby m - Leather in modern day automobiles has a protective coating that is on it. The pores of the leather have the equivalent of a clear coat on them much like your paint has a protective coating on it.

Yes it's coated, but it's still porous, especially if it's creased or cracking from wear (in which case it's even more important to keep it conditioned and flexible to prevent further cracking). That protective coating is very thin and isn't going to last forever.

madtonesbr I agree with you about it still having pores and the coating being thin. I also agree that it can wear which is why you still put conditioner on it. I simply was pointing out to robby m that it does have a protective coating. It is not a raw hide like you would see on a baseball glove.

mrplays1 I used Nonsense from Chemical Guys diluted to about 15:1 (water:cleaner). I sprayed the belts until they were soaked and used the Uber soft brush and left my Porter Cable polisher set on 5. They turned out perfect looking. They are tan again!

To clean dirty seat belts use only warn, soapy water and a brush. DO NOT use cleaners that incorporate Ammonia or other solvents. Seat belt webbing is formulated to resist UV and Infra Red contamination. If your belt(s) is nicked or frayed it should be replaced with a belt that conforms to the safety standards in your country.

Basic premise is flawed. That leather is coated/sealed, so the pores aren't opening. For that same reason you don't use a traditional leather conditioner.

I been using a magic eraser for years when cleaning my leather seats just don't be too aggressive and do not forget to recondition the leather,very quick and very effective!

Again, a wonderful tutorial. Guys, do be careful when scrubbing... with a pad or even microfiber. I wore off the top coat of my S2000 leather seats in a couple of places when I scrubbed too hard (or with not enough leather cleaner present to lubricate). Less force and with the right product is always the best way to go!
