Love the video. Had acorns few years back reopening after watching your vids wife love it when we had it. Also they added a feature now where you can add stocks you want. I’ll have to research more into to see how it would works with dividends and if they have a drip . Would be a nice vid if you added that info to it.

I’ll definitely make something like that but also, spoiler alert: it’s not working super well. So it may end up more of a cautionary tale than a “how to”.

Just one question for you Brendan. For your first criteria, I feel like you’re getting on some of these brokerages for offering features for traders, etc and promoting them, but they have to offer these features to be competitive with other brokerages. You’re mentioning that investors should invest slow but they still have the choice to do so - they can just dca into an index fund/hold bonds if they’d like to. But as beginner investors become more advanced and learn over time, they may very well want to buy individual stocks or trade options, etc. and so they’ll need to have those options available to them if they want them. I think encouraging someone to grow their money is offering them all of the available options (including options, no pun intended) along with education and guidance on investing and then letting them choose because personal finance is personal. At the end of the day, an investing service should offer everything and then people can make their own decisions. Curious to hear your thoughts
@BrendanEvan13 күн бұрын
Thanks so much for watching for your thoughtful comment! I respect your opinion and have thoughts of my own, but that’s all they are. I disagree fundamentally with the idea that “as beginners become more advanced” they should trade options or stocks. For 99% of us we should never worry about anything advanced. It’s missing the point. We need to invest as much as possible as early as possible. Earning more money and spending less does a better job of that than advanced trading. It’s like me with my weight. I gained 15-20lbs of fat in 2024. It’s tempting to look for the “best” fitness plan, diet, training gear, sleep routines, hybrid athlete coach, etc. when what I just need to do is eat less junk and exercise more. It’s simple, but the other stuff is more fun to investigate. Same thing for investing.

Fair point, and I agree with much of what you’re saying as well. Glad we could have this conversation and good luck with everything in the new year! Excited for more content!!

Firstrade website says they DO have fractional shares. Is that a recent change since this was recorded?
@BrendanEvan20 күн бұрын
I see it now too, I don’t know! www.firstrade.com/trading/fractional-shares

First Trade does fractional shares on stocks I think and ETF with high AUM. For example popular ETFs such as Jepi, Jepq, Divo,Fepi etc. If etfs does not have Fractional Shares purchase you still can select Dividend Reinvestment and buy Fractional shares through dividend reinvestment. Basically, Firsttrade offers you unlimited selection of ETFs unlike Acorn or Betterment where selection is limited. Hope it's helpful.

What’s the process from transferring from one app to another? Do you sell your holdings, withdraw to your bank account once it’s liquid, and then transfer from your bank account to the new app? Any fees/tax penalties to be aware of? Thanks!
@BrendanEvan17 күн бұрын
In my experience you need the new account setup first, and from there you can typically find a “transfer” option. Depending on what you’re transferring and from where the next steps will vary. Sometimes it’s kind of automatic after a bit more information is entered, other times you may talk to a real human. Also depending on what you’re transferring you may have to sell holdings which is probably going to mean you get hit with taxes on any gains. The goal of course is to minimize taxes so that’s less than ideal. For example I could transfer individual stocks from M1 to Robinhood but not mutual funds. So what was able to do was quite easy, a couple steps, a couple days later it was done. To get the mutual funds over I would have to sell the holdings, turn it back into cash, then transfer the cash. For my old 401k I told the old account company where to transfer the assets (into a traditional Ira) and it all happened seamlessly.
