Okay, time for a small bit of info dump on the legality of fatness in Japan. First, it is not illegal to be fat in Japan. Well, mostly. You will not see anyone get arrested or fined for it. But, Japanese citizens between 40 and 74 years of age are required to be weighed once a year, and if found to be overweight the COMPANY THEY WORK FOR gets fined. Also, when found to be overweight, the citizen is required to seek medical attention and counseling, but, they will not be fined or arrested for any of the weight or even for not getting the help. Secondly, you will not be denied entry into Japan as a foreigner for being overweight. In fact, unless you are a citizen of Japan, the law will have basically no effect on you. Now, for Sumos...once again, note the age range...40 to 74...the oldest Sumo Champion was 37... That is because, sumos...more or less quit being sumos a few years before turning 40. And that should answer any questions about the law regarding being fat in Japan....more or less. As it is a law, there is of course more to it, but, overall, that is all you really need to know.
