I grew up with this game. What I really loved was it’s moding community. They added a lot of extra to the character creator, raising replayability significatly. I mean… I could play as Grievous or Darth Maul as the main character! It is such a crime Disney destroyed this timeline. This was the Academy and Master Luke Skywalker I loved.
@BBQBARNES-GAMING6 күн бұрын
I keep saying the sequels should have been Kyles story. Just imagine the movies playing through him defecting from the imperials and learning he has the forces then facing Jarec, Then going though him falling to the darkside before separating himself from the force and his return to the light in Outcast. Academies story could be one of the separate movies like SOLO lol Could have been amazing
@Esty5686 күн бұрын
@ I feel we have a sliver of hope for old characters, since Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are clearly trying to find a loophole around Disney’s craziness and find a way for the old stories to somehow fit into this new timeline, but Disney is holding them back purposefully.

So, a fun little piece of retcon fact that I always liked (once I heard of it), having grown up on Jedi Academy similarly to you: In Strongholds of Resistance, an expansion module for the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion TTRPG that came out in 2015, the Jedi in the Chandrila Tomb was given an identity. Specifically, it is the Tomb of the Third Barsen'thor of the Jedi Order... otherwise known as the _Jedi Consular player character_ from Star Wars: The Old Republic. As a fan of both JA and SWTOR, I've always liked that little lore tie-in, and I always bid Master Fortech (my Barsen'thor) a fond farewell when I come back to Chandrila.

Was always fun having drama with the dual saber clans. In terms of multiplayer, outcast allowed you to have so many more bots for the offline matches so I used to play hours upon hours of outcast bot matches on GameCube. But the online and improved combat for consoles makes Academy the best. I haven’t played through the story in so long it was great to watch this video and be hit with all the nostalgia. I watch, or rather listen to a lot of these lengthsy retrospectives while doing chores or commuting, so I have points of comparison, and yours is really well made. I love how much effort you put into the music, exchanging John Williams pieces from JA to the ones from KOTOR almost seamlessly. 10:10 I think because Jaden was supposed to be a wish fulfillment for the player they refrained from giving him/her a strong personality so that the players could identify with the character easier. Keeping Jaden's lines more neutral sounding gives an opportunity for the player to decide how he feels about things. Like in the introduction scene you can't really tell what Jaden thinks of Rosh because they didn't want to influence the player in that regard.

1:48:11 Well the thing is, Korriban's design in Academy comes from the Golden Age of the Sith comics made in the '90s, taking place in Ragnos' lifetime, so 1000 years before the events of Kotor... yeah, the devs at Bioware totally ignored the established architecture while Raven Software stayed true to it. Correction: I just remembered that Ragnos was already dead at that point. But his spirit made an appearence and looked exactly like how they've shown in Academy.

Being able to customize your lightsaber and do all these little acrobatic tricks with the force felt awesome. And the tomb on Chandrilla and the train in Coronet City are some of my favorite levels. I’ve just thought about this and I realize that the reason why Jayden and Rosh are so powerful even at the beginning of the game is because most of the places that they go to are spiritual tied to the force and I can name a few of places that they go to that are tied to the force , Luke’s temple , Darth Vader’s castle , the tombs of the Sith Lords and the planet korriban . Not only are these places connected to the force but they also boost both Rosh and Jayden’s powers and abilities . Especially if Jayden becomes a Sith Lord then his powers grow with each life he takes as the dark side fuels his powers and grows within him . Notice how Jayden easily destroys both Jedi and the cult of Ragnos with ease . I believe that because of his force potential and that the dark side both physically and spiritually is around him , that his powers are boosted above the other force users . I do think that he and Rosh were on par with each other during their fight in Vader’s castle but by the time that Rosh had turned back to the Jedi ways , Jayden had surpassed him not only in physical combat but also knowledge in the dark side . I do think that had this game gotten a sequel, Jayden would’ve have surpassed Kyle Katan . During the final battle in the game , I do think that Jayden was getting close to Kyle’s level but not quite there yet . This is just my opinion, I’d love to hear your thoughts on what I just said .
@BBQBARNES-GAMING6 күн бұрын
Good point. Not to mention in Outcast we find out the Yavin academy is built on top of an Ancient force Nexus point so probably all the Jedi there got a slight boost just by being close to it, though most planets they visit they visit after the force energy had already been absorbed by Tavion so that part probably doesn't work except for Rosh who might have used the staff to increase his own powers explaining his strength in Vaders castle. If Jayden goes dark he could be more powerful then Kyle due to him still having the staff to take and use the forces as well as like you said slaughtering everyone at Korriban would have really fueled that Dark energy. But don't forget not only is Kyle inherently gifted in the force (shown in DF2) but has spent time in places like Drummond Kass and has also used the Valley of the Jedi. According to Luke a Dassan used it, it would give him near Palpatine levels of power (though I think that's an exaggeration) but it does show how much power one can get from using it like Kyle did in Outcast. btw sorry for long response time holidays are crazy lol

Dark Forces, DF2, Mysteries of the Sith, JKO, and JKA were bloody awesome. As always, Lucasarts always pushed the envelope with each game. And all the while, the Quake and Unreal engines were REALLY going places, obviously.
@BBQBARNES-GAMING3 ай бұрын
definitely and not just in the general game design but DF 2 had a really solid story which was not common prior to 1999. Really helped pave the road in the FPS genre but unfortunately gets forgotten when discussing influential games of that era

Great video! Regarding your community question at the end, I thought Outcast had a better story, but I've probably sunk more time into Academy just for multiplayer alone. Both games have pretty similar multiplayer, but the Academy one is slightly newer, so I usually went with it. I remember even getting into modding a bit and putting myself and my friends into the game to play with! Both games are great, though. Keep it up with the great content! :)

I may be one of the few people that actually enjoyed the First Person Shooter aspect of this game (more so than Outcast) cause after beating the game multiple times the normal way (using the lightsaber 99% of the time) the Imperial Prison mission on Dosuun gave me the idea for an interesting challenge. Play through it primarily as a fps. I say primarily cause you have to use your lightsaber to deal with the dark Jedi, especially the Reborn as they deflect and dodge all your shots, the saberless ones however don't and thus can be taken out with blasters. Either way, I found it much more fun and challenging playing as a Force wielding Gunslinger. Using Force Speed and Jump to evade fire and shoot back accurately (The E-11 and other automatic guns don't scatter with Force Speed active), using Mind trick to turn enemies against each other and Force Pull to disarm them and watch them run around. Also, the Concussion Rifle and rocket launcher, I learned when trying to use them against the Reborn (effective against the Dark Jedi though). You can Force Push them back at the shooter. In fact, I can still remember my times of trying to play "Rocket Pong" with the Reborn. I shoot a rocket at them, they Force Push it back at me, I Force push it back to them, and we keep at this till either it hits one of us (usually me as I run out of FP), or they decide and push it away instead of back at me... killjoy.
@BBQBARNES-GAMINGАй бұрын
Oh man i used to love playing Rocket Pong! also mind trick is crazy powerful in Academy vs Outcast its a lot of fun to use. I have always thought about a gunslinger playthrough but have never committed to it but i might have to try

@BBQBARNES-GAMING I've often found gunslinger playthrough a lot of fun. Just got to keep on mind that it plays like an old school shooter. Meaning little to no cover and no regenerating health. Well, unless you pick up Force Heal/Drain.

The clone palpatine story was actually in comic books, not regular books, but yes, it was much better implemented than the Disney version. It actually spans a trilogy of graphic novels, "Dark Empire", "Dark Empire II", and "Empire's End". A much cooler version (albeit more fragile and stationary) of starkiller base is also in the second and third graphic novel, the Galaxy Gun, which fires missiles into hyperspace that can destroy planets as well as ships. The graphic novels have the original inspiration for the xyston star destroyers, the much more unique and cooler eclipse class star destroyer (apparently an early script for the final sequel movie actually had the eclipse class star destroyer playing a major role that you would not expect; the script was actually more interesting than what we got, not great but definitely better, there is a voice over motion comic adaptation of this script on KZbin, but it was also much longer). Anyway, R2-D2 also scores his biggest kill count in those graphic novels lol, one that probably surpasses nearly any other character in star wars.
@BBQBARNES-GAMING6 күн бұрын
Yeah the idea of Palpatine coming back isn't bad if done right and the comics really made feel really dark (no pun intended) Back then the darkside had this otherworldly feel with stuff like Sith Sorcery and these crazy rituals that could change and deform the world around them. Those old comics where great! And yeah R2 has a bigger body count then any other hero out there lol

well im a 90s baby so yeah dark forces 2 is my favorite. not that i have any probelsm with these its certianly just fond memories making it feel better and more like an old home. in this era i was playing bounty hunter and starfighter which are far more up my speed genre wise. and maybe thats a good thing cause knowing its over and even the canon parts of this story are no longer canon- it makes me kinda at home with the fact that starwars has changed. and it doesnt really mean much that it has. canon is whatever i think it is and even in the eu era that was somewhat encouraged if ya wanted to enjoy things. disney owning it kinda freed me from caring about canon and i basically only treat the six lucas films as actual canon. everything else is playing in his backyard so my own canon is kotor/kotor 2 the two lucas trilogy of movies starfighter and jedi starfighter and bounty hunter all fit, and the clone wars tv show. the disney entries i consider canon are solo rebels rogue one and andor. (I also really liked obiwan but ill just slot that in as honorary rebels stuff) thats whats satisfying to me and i think if ya take that approach to it, itll be fun to be starwars fan even now. Im slowly adding the two jedi souls bourne games as well and both battlefront duologies dont really contradict too heavy either. im just waiting to see how they close off cals story. definetly the closest to this vibe it gets in the modern day.
@BBQBARNES-GAMING3 ай бұрын
I actually sort of agree with you there. For me its kind of freeing to just not worry with what Disney does and now go back and enjoy the stories i love. KOTOR games are always a go to for me and I'm currently re reading through the Xwing books as well as the timothy Zahn books and enjoying it just as much as I did as a kid. I despise the art style of the clone wars series however the majority of the stories are some of the best Disney products so far. I still haven't played the Jedi survivor games so still need to try them out but they look pretty good. A lot of the hate for Disney in my videos is more of my since of humor. Honesty i no longer care what they do expect maybe to laugh at when its as bad as the Acolyte or something but every now and again they have something I enjoy

@BBQBARNES-GAMING hell the villian guy for the acolyte is kinda great it's just stuffed into an unfocused idea. Keep him maybe do another starwars animated collab with that kinda sith. I actually just grabbed the zahn thrawn trilogy found it still wrapped even in some walk in store.
