certificates are an inexpensive way to go if you don't have a college education. Make sure that the way you word your resume aligns with the job you are applying to. Also, be prepared to interview because you never know when you are going to be speaking to your new manager.

Yes. No one talks about that. It is demeaning and depressing. All you worked for is now worth half.
@mardaya

@@heidiaguilar1257 That is how coaches make money, talking about the blindspots that people don't realize about. Nobody tells you to customize a resume and cover letter for each job you apply. Schools don't teach that and that information is so valuable that many end up underemployed just because of that. Not fair.

@@mardaya Somehow the advise on this video is unreasonable and un-doable for probably most people who are over 50 (and especially far past their 50s) who want to go back to work. The issue is addressed here as if people have options of taking time out to go back to college or school to "upgrade skills" and as if people have the option to invest money time and energy in taking several steps back by "re-inventing" themselves so as to then go forward and find a job. Heck. The majority of people who are older and want to find work probably need to find a job ASAP to make money. Of course it may be necessary or useful to learn a new skill or develop older skills bla bla, but some people who are older cannot merely allow themselves to age another one or two or three years while studying or volunteering or researching companies before they can land a job that is doable for them. Also there are older people who are definitely still fit and healthy enough to go back to work but still cannot do heavy lifting as may be required in any job that requires taking care of a sick or handicapped or elderly person. There are also jobs that may require long hours in front of a computer. There may be certain jobs that would not allow a person to sit while working. I have heard that if you want to work as a cashier it is unusual or unheard of that the employer will allow you to sit down while on the job. If older people are taken into certain jobs it seems that there should be reasonable accommodations as older people may automatically have certain handicaps and may not be physically able to do what a teenager may be able to do. It is a conundrum and not so easily addressed by merely saying that there are opportunities if you go for them and apply yourself . I have had leg surgery and it took months to recover. I need to find a new job as my older job is having very slow business. I am able bodied but cannot take a job that requires constantly lifting 75 pounds (even though at my old job I had done some occasional mildly heavy lifting ). I am good with computers but there are 10 year-olds who are just as good or better with them. I have done office work but there are actually no office jobs that would have me doing what I am familiar with. Most remote work requires higher educational credentials than what I have.

I moved with my husband for HIS job. During that time my 4 boys have grown and moved on. It has been 8 years and I have been turned down over and over again with certifications in EMT, CNA and Phlebotomy from Community College that I went to just prior to moving and after I moved! I am 59 physically fit and of sound mind. I always had at least a 3.6 average in every course that I took. It is due to my age- there is NO doubt.

@obscurelyvague

@user-eu2me4bp7 Sadly that is what the majority of women who need jobs go into because it is so "automatic." I could not be a teacher or instructor. I do not have the skills to work with people in that way. I have no experience in hospitality. For the past 20 years I worked in an office doing some paperwork and stocking supplies and running errands, things that anyone can be hired to do. It is that no one else stayed with the job. I had to. I worked as a walking messenger when I was much younger (very hard physical work), in the mid 1990s I worked in a small electronics manufacturing company for about a year before they downsized. I had gone back to school a few times in my life to learn computers, electronics, and medical assisting, and I was not successful in "moving up" to a better job. Some of the training programs just did not come through for me. Many years back when I tried to find a job in one electronics/tech company they told me that if I do not have my own car to drive to their facility they will not hire me. A lot of odd things happened.

Most of the suggested jobs are very low paying and this whole conversation is borderline sexist. I avoid the term SAHM when interviewing. If I'm pressed about it repeatedly in an interview it's a red flag. (It can also be illegal for a potential employer to do this.) If someone asks immediately steer the convo. back to your experience and skills as it relates to a job.

I can tell you so HOT careers right now!! Truck drivers! Every and i mean EVERY trucking company is hiring. Don't have a CDL? No problem they pay for your training and CDL plus many are giving sign on bonuses. Construction! Every job site I have seen is short handed. Don't know a trade yet? Most have fast track apprenticeship programs. Most trades pay well. Electricians, HVAC Techs, plumbers, masons, concrete finishers, landscapers, cabinets, tile and carpet, sheetrock and painters all are short handed.

But ladies, what if that mom thats 50, is a full on loser, with no personality, no social skills, is leaving a bad marriage, has no resume... I guess that mom can go work in a crappy job. This works for women with "personality." Community college won't help you if your a loser. Education does not get you a job, personality, good makeup, and appearance do.
